Aug 2018 MHE-Demag continues to strengthen its service capabilities in the Philippines with the construction of a new fabrication facility and the local market launch of its revolutionary V-type crane. Boosting Crane Production The construction of a new MHE-Demag crane fabrication facility in the First Philippine Industrial Park located in Santo Tomas, Batangas is currently underway. The environmentally-friendly, state-of-the-art facility with automated plant operations sprawls over a vast two-hectare plot of land. It will boost MHE-Demag s local crane production capacity by an additional 300 cranes a year a necessary move as we have tripled business volume over the past 10 years. Ours is a true Philippine success story. We started 28 years ago with a vision to bring high-quality, localised material handling solutions to the market. Today, having designed, built, installed and serviced over 1,200 cranes domestically, we have outgrown our current production capacity. It is even more meaningful that this facility is funded solely by revenue generated in the Philippines, by a workforce that is 99% Filipino, said Marc von Grabowski, President of MHE-Demag in the Philippines. Introducing the V-type Crane MHE-Demag s innovative take on the conventional box girder crane concept has heralded the arrival of a next-generation crane girder, named the V-type crane. First unveiled in Thailand in November 2017, the revolutionary concept was introduced to the Philippine market in June this year. At the launch event held in the heart of Metro Manila, the V-type crane made its local debut with a spectacular laser show and holographic images that showcased its unique features and benefits. This culminated in a grand reveal that had guests applauding enthusiastically. Guests were also invited to share their experience on social media with the official event hashtags #MHEDemag and #VTypeCrane and those who did were thanked with a souvenir in the form of an event photo magnet. With the V-type crane s successful grand entrance into the Philippine market, we are confident of strengthening success as we continue to journey with local customers.

2 2 MACKEREL VOLUME 03/2018 BUSINESS Seven Years in the Making MHE-Demag secures a multi-million dollar contract from SIA Engineering in Singapore By Lyndee Ng, Singapore Jul 2018 It took seven years, but MHE-Demag has won a S$7.8-million contract to design, supply, deliver, install, test, and commission new tele-platforms and a hangar crane system for SIA Engineering in Singapore. The project to replace the customer s existing system began with an enquiry seven years ago. Multiple challenges and roadblocks arose due to intense competition, the demanding technical nature of the system, and budget approvals from SIA Engineering. Our relationship with the customer dates back over 30 years, shortly after we first started supplying engineered cranes for aircraft production and maintenance in With our high-availability crane solutions that are precisely matched to process requirements, customers can benefit from a considerable increase in cycle rates, higher productivity levels, and more cost-effective operations. We have been sharing our expertise with SIA Engineering by loyally servicing the equipment at its one-stop maintenance facility in Changi Airport for over three decades. BUSINESS A Leader in More Than One Way MHE-Demag adds to its track record with two new firsts in Malaysia By Segar Supramaniam, Malaysia May 2018 MHE-Demag continues to solidify its industry leadership with two recent milestone achievements. We have become the first in the region to supply a hydraulic pantograph lift with a massive lifting capacity of 25,000kg to support the construction of the Klang Valley Mass Rapid Transit System (KVMRT), and the first in Malaysia to install a Parapet Mounted Trolley building maintenance unit (BMU) for Melawati Mall in Kuala Lumpur. KVMRT is one of the largest construction projects in Malaysia at the moment. To ease congestion in the interim, 192 feeder buses now serve major routes in the city. We were entrusted to supply two units of OMER 250 KAR Lifts. These hydraulic pantograph lifts with a lifting capacity of 25,000kg are needed to lift feeder buses and other large vehicles for general maintenance works. A hydraulic pantograph lift with a massive lifting capacity of 25,000kg is keeping Klang Valley on the move. Over in Kuala Lumpur, we have created history with the installation of Malaysia s first Parapet Mounted Trolley BMU on the roof of the new Melawati Mall. With the building s ocean-wave design creating space limitations, our team proposed an innovative solution of anchoring the BMU track vertically on the inner parapet, instead of on the floor, to successfully deliver the project.

Our team won two tender building programmes for Hotel Monopoli in Kemang, South Jakarta and the Grand Classics Hotel in Cikarang, West Java. The former has been successfully handed over to the customer, while the latter is expected to be delivered by the third quarter of We have also grown our reach beyond the Java region by securing a booster and transfer pump project for Impiana Villas & Resorts Project in Ubud, Bali. A project for the Grand Classics Hotel in Cikarang, West Java is one of the Pumps Division s notable wins. These wins are testament to our team s hard work and bode well for the division as we continue to serve this strategic customer segment. BUSINESS Furthering its Reach The opening of the new Lampung Service Depot marks MHE-Demag s 29th location in Indonesia By Fifi Amaliawati, Indonesia Jul 2018 MHE-Demag now serves customers from 29 locations in Indonesia with the opening of our latest service depot in Lampung. Located on the southern tip of Sumatra, Lampung is home to several key industries such as cement, palm oil, sugar and flour. There are also power plants and distribution centres located there. Customers in this area were previously served by our presence in Palembang almost 400km and a nine-hour drive away. With this new service depot, we are confident of growing the business in the Lampung area as we are now better positioned to provide quick response time to our customers, said CP Tai, President Director of MHE-Demag in Indonesia, as he officially opened the service depot during a simple ceremony on July 19. 4 4 MACKEREL VOLUME 03/2018 BUSINESS Trusted to Deliver JJ-Lurgi secures yet another refinery project in Malaysia By Anthony Chang, Malaysia Jul 2018 JJ-Lurgi has recently won a project to deliver a 500 TPD semi continuous refinery in Malaysia for a major edible oil player that specialises in producing premium grade specialty fats and oils for the global market. The refinery will boost the customer s production capacity and allow it to better cater to the increased demand for specialty fats in the chocolate and confectionery industry. We have designed the facility to feature an ice condensing vacuum system that provides better vacuum conditions in the deodoriser. This provides better oil stability and quality and reduces waste water generation. The project is expected to be delivered by the first quarter of Vessel fabrication in progress. BUSINESS A Powerful Partnership Cables International enters the electrical accessories market with R. Stahl By Brian Sweeny, Singapore Sep 2018 Cables International has announced a new partnership with R. Stahl, a leading brand in explosion protection products and solutions. The partnership combines Cables International s leadership in cables supply to the oil and gas sector with R. Stahl s highly regarded harsh environment products to serve the South East Asian market. In a new partnership, Cables International has been appointed as a Tier One Distributor in South East Asia by R. Stahl. With our appointment as R. Stahl s South East Asian Tier One Distributor and Partner of Choice, we have access to the brand s full range of stocked products as well as engineering and assembly support from Singapore. We have since secured our first order for S$225,000 worth of explosionproof lighting from a client in Brazil.

5 MACKEREL VOLUME 03/ INNOVATION Achieving Carbon Neutrality How Jebsen & Jessen became the first carbon-neutral industrial company in South East Asia By Anthea Ho, Malaysia Through a systematic approach to measure our group-wide carbon emissions, we have been able to establish the Group s annual carbon footprint. Step 2: Minimising our carbon footprint Having established our carbon footprint, we take various energy efficiency initiatives to minimise this. This includes a group-wide effort to replace high-carbon with low-carbon energy sources. This effectively means that we pay for the equivalent amount of carbon dioxide to be removed from the atmosphere by a third-party project to offset our own carbon footprint. These projects are verified and validated by Bureau Veritas and other international accreditation bodies. 03/10/ To this end, we partner with South Pole Group, a world-leading emissions reduction project developer, to select projects in our region that offset our carbon emissions and have a track record of making a tangible positive impact on the local communities. Our most recent carbon neutrality certification venture with global sustainability solutions leader, South Pole Group. May 2018 In 2011, we made history as the first industrial company in South East Asia to achieve 100% carbon neutrality. It is a feat for an organisation of our size and scale to have been able to measure and minimise our group carbon emissions to an efficient level, then offset the remaining emissions with carbon credits from high-quality, verified carbon offset projects around the world to achieve a net zero carbon footprint. We have offset around 350,000 tonnes of CO2 since 2011 using a disciplined, three-step approach. Step 1: Calculating our carbon footprint Understanding the impact of our operations on the environment is the first step in identifying ways to neutralise our footprint. The first project that we support is the Siam Cement Group Biomass in northern Thailand, which involves the modification of five cement manufacturing plants to use renewable biomass instead of fossil fuels. The second is the Za Hung Hydropower project in Vietnam. This project bridges the gap between energy supply and demand in the country through renewable energy. In addition to environmental benefits, Za Hung Hydropower has created permanent jobs for the locals and funded the construction of new roads and houses. Our third project is the Nakhon Biogas project in Thailand that captures methane, a pollutant and by-product of a local cassava starch factory. The captured methane is then used as cleaning fuel for the factory to reduce the production of greenhouse gases. Clean wastewater is also recycled as irrigation for local farmers and to serve water reservoirs. Our approach to carbon neutrality comes from our commitment to our people, our communities and our environment. We hope to inspire more people and businesses to do their part to prevent global warming.

As part of the full-day workshop, participants were divided into eight groups and took turns attending a lab demonstration at Evonik Lab and an in-depth seminar about Evonik s advanced food ingredients and nutritional delivery technologies. Participants benefited from a live lab demonstration during the workshop. We also streamed the event on Facebook Live and provided a weblink for participants to continue receiving pharma and personal care updates from us. We welcomed visitors to our booth with a full range of nutrition and health products by principals such as Oryza. With significant interest garnered from visitors, we werea able to successfully strengthen our position as a reliable and innovative solution provider. 7 MACKEREL VOLUME 03/ EVENTS Thailand: Sustainability Through Excellence in Manufacturing 2018 By Phankom Ngamsaneh, Thailand May 2018 Sustainability Through Excellence in Manufacturing (STEM) 2018 was held on May 9, 2018 as part of a continuous technical education programme by Jebsen & Jessen Ingredients Thailand and DSM Sinochem Pharmaceutical India (DSP). The one-day event was attended by 50 participants from industry and academia, and featured presentations as well as hands-on group activities. The seminar has enhanced our relationship with DSM and brought us closer to our customers. It even led to several sales inquiries that our team is currently following up on. The technical education programme drew full attendance from industry participants. Philippines: Accessing New Markets in Mindanao By Rose Denzon, Philippines xxx xxxx xxxxx xxxx xxxx xxxx xxxxx. May 2018 General Santos in the Philippines played host to the 7th Philippine Society of Mechanical Engineers (PSME) Mindanao Regional Conference. A three-day exhibition, held as part of the conference, provided a good platform for MHE-Demag to introduce our products and offerings to practising mechanical engineers from the region of Mindanao. We also conducted a product presentation to over 400 delegates and sparked their interest by sharing case studies of our cranes and components projects locally and abroad. 8 8 MACKEREL VOLUME 03/2018 GLOBAL REACH GMA Garnet TM and the Brandenburg State Parliament How the sister company s high quality garnet helped replicate a 250-year-old iconic building By Stephanie Cheong, Australia The iconic Brandenburg State Parliament in Germany. Jul 2018 The Brandenburg State Parliament was constructed on one of the oldest settlements in Potsdam, Germany. Fortresses, castles and a city palace once stood on this site over 250 years ago. The city palace was ruined during World War II and completely demolished in The former town centre became a wasteland. In 1999, efforts to redevelop the city centre began. This included a new parliament building to be constructed within the perimeter and outline of the historic Potsdam city palace, designed to closely replicate the structure and appearance of the once-iconic building. A collection of original artefacts was also incorporated into the outer façades of the new building, creating a heavy load on the parapets. A substructure of custom designed brackets made of at least 15mm thick stainless steel was installed to support the parapets. In order to cut such a hard and thick material with precise contours, and to eliminate the need to weld the components together, the brackets were produced via waterjet cutting using our sister company s GMA ClassicCut 80. Managing Partner Fritz von der Schulenburg led the audience through past, present, and future with the Jebsen & Jessen Family Enterprise s 120 years of history, Jebsen & Jessen Hamburg s current strategic milestones, and the need to transform to modern business models in the future. This was followed by presentations about the sister company s new structure including its new affiliates and offices in South, Central and North America. Employees were thanked for their support and dedication. With a sense of pride radiating throughout the hall, the future looks bright for our sister company. This is part of a strategic decision to unite the business in Malaysia and Singapore in order to better meet supplier and customer needs. By consolidating resources in the two countries under Ms Lim s leadership, the business will benefit from greater synergy and will be better positioned to drive growth in a more focused and better resourced way. He is responsible for managing Jebsen & Jessen Ingredients growth in the B2B and B2C e-business, creating an online sales platform for the business, and developing capabilities and systems to respond to fast-changing customer requirements. Somsit Soontarawan Sales Manager, Scientific Division Jebsen & Jessen Technology, Thailand Celebration held on Mar 14, 2018 Somsit Soontarawan, known as Samson to the team, began his journey with the Group in 1993 as a Sales Representative of the Scientific Division. In 2002, he was promoted to Sales Manager and, in 2011, joined the Jebsen & Jessen Technology team. The celebration in his honour was attended by 50 past and present colleagues, as well as members of the regional management team.

11 MACKEREL VOLUME 03/ Milestones Ferry Gunawan Senior Service Manager MHE-Demag, Indonesia Tjokorda Wira Suartha Assistant Refurbishment Manager MHE-Demag, Indonesia Celebration held on Apr 18, 2018 Ferry Gunawan and Tjokorda Wira Suartha joined the company in 1993, at a time when the Service division was just a small group of about 30 staff. In their 25 years, they have witnessed and contributed to the growth of the division and MHE-Demag as a whole. In their honour, colleagues from the Surabaya office as well as senior management representatives gathered to mark their 25th work anniversary. Ferry joined the company as Spare Parts Sales Engineer. He progressed steadily through the ranks and, in 2014, was entrusted with the role of Senior Service Manager. Tjokorda s start was as a Service Technician (KHAT) before he moved into IPD. He has worked in the Jakarta and Surabaya offices. In 2004, he took on a Refurbishment Sales role and in 2013, became Assistant Refurbishment Manager. Wasikin Delivery Driver Jebsen & Jessen Technology, Indonesia Celebration held on Jul 11, 2018 For Wasikin, Jebsen & Jessen Technology Indonesia s friendly delivery driver with a big smile, a celebration was held to honour his dedication to his work and the company. Wasikin has honed his driving skills for 25 years by always being focused and attentive on the road. While 25 years is a very long time, for me, time has flown by so quickly that it seems like only yesterday when I joined the company, said Wasikin.

12 12 MACKEREL VOLUME 03/2018 FEATURES Making the World a Better Place This year, Meet a Need extended a helping hand to communities in Vietnam and marine life in Malaysia By Thipwadee R, Thailand and Putri Victor, Indonesia The Great Ocean Clean-up Shortly after the volunteers returned, another team of over 30 volunteers headed to Kota Kinabalu in Sabah, Malaysia for Meet a Green Need Held in support of Sustaining Kota Kinabalu s Marine Heritage, the trip from July 29 to August 4 was a partnership with Sutera Harbour Resort and Universiti Malaysia Sabah. Lectures on the first day helped our volunteers understand how plastic bags, styrofoam and other non-degradable trash are endangering many forms of marine life, and motivated them to do their best in the beach-combing activities and marine biodiversity surveys that they were subsequently involved in. Our volunteers tirelessly building a community typhoon evacuation shelter that doubles up as a community centre for a local community in Vietnam. Jul 2018 Two back-to-back Meet a Need trips in July and August 2018 saw over 60 colleagues making a difference in a rural fishing village in Vietnam and helping to sustain Malaysia s marine heritage. Here are their stories. Among the volunteers were four divers who went into the sea to gather important data for research purposes. Meanwhile, non-divers conducted a plankton survey to help researchers monitor for Harmful Algal Bloom situations that occur when the amount of the plankton in the ocean gets out of control. To spread the importance of Sustaining Kota Kinabalu s Marine Heritage, we invited national and local media to join the trip and help spread conservation news to the wider public. The Gift of Shelter In the tiny coastal village of Son Tra, Vietnam, people lead simple lives in simple homes homes that are not built to withstand the devastating effects of typhoons that visit the area six to eight times a year. For Meet a Social Need 2018, 21 colleagues from Australia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam volunteered to construct a community typhoon evacuation shelter for the people of Man Thai ward in Son Tra. Organised in partnership with World Vision International, the trip took place from July 8-14 and saw the team building an evacuation shelter that would keep the locals safe during typhoon season and double up as a community centre to bring people together during non-typhoon seasons. Even the back-breaking work and sweltering 40 C summer heat did not stop our volunteers from doing more. They learnt how to lift huge fishing nets from the sea and rode in little Vietnamese bamboo basket boats called thung chai with the local fishermen. They visited the local kindergarten where they helped the teachers make toys from recycled materials, and put on a group performance of Baby Shark Zumba to delight their hosts. Our eco heroes who helped preserve Kota Kinabalu s marine heritage. The Meet a Green Need programme is a fantastic programme.
