Ms West received the Lifetime Achievement Award, while Mr Coulhard took out the Outstanding Contributor Award. The Koori Mail s own Jillian Mundy took out the Best Photography award for her series on the art of mutton birding. Mark Ahsley s Ngambi won the Best Documentary short, and Dean Gibson, Hele Morrison and Trish Lake took out Best Documentary long for Wik Vs Queensland. The Best Radio Production Award went to NG Media s Ngaanyatjarra Dreaming series, and Dena Curtis won the Best Drama or Comedy for Grace Beside Me. PAW Media won Best Language/Culture Production for Yarripirri s Journey and Best Sports Coverage for Yuendumu Sports Weekend. Mojo Juju took out the Best Music Video for Native Tongue and Best News or Current Affairs Program was awarded to Noongar Radio for Our Voices. NITV s Madeline HaymanReber and Sylvia Rowley won Best News or Current Affairs story for Guilty of Being Stolen. NITV won the Best Interview or Oral History Award for The Point and took out the Best Promotion or Station ID Award. The Best Training and Professional Development award went to 6DBY s Rebekah O Meara. The First Nations Media Awards were part of a two day First Nations Media conference. The conference, Converge, saw media organisations from around the country gather in Sydney for two days of sharing, Wongki Radio s Wayne Bynder. learning and networking. The event was opened with a Welcome to Country from Uncle Allen Madden and MC d by Andrea Fraser and Grant Maling. During the conference attendees heard from a number of speakers including Federal Labor Senator Malarndirri McCarthy, NITV s Tanya Orman, First Nations Media Australia chair Dot West, and founder of Winda Film Festival Pauline Clague. The panel discussions and workshops centred on a range of topics including new production, archiving, the Our Media Matters campaign, and career pathways and training. Umeewarra Media s Uncle Vince Coulthard from Port Augusta, South Australia, spoke on the Career Pathways and Training Support panel. Mr Coulthard said when you re in media, especially Indigenous media, it becomes a way of life. We use every resource available to us to make content, and we have to start getting young people to think that way, he said.
