2 SUMMER IN FALLS CREEK How Good It This? Somebody, probably more than one person, once said that summer will never work in Falls Creek. Oh sure, the number of permanent residents has gone down a little. But, our current crop of permanent residents sure make up for that. Then we have a number of summer events that are kicking things along nicely. Since 2010, when the BHP Road across the top was sealed, the number of road cyclists that visit the area has grown exponentially. E.g. In a 40 minute drive up the hill last Saturday and Sunday morning, your Ed counted 25 cyclists on Saturday and just over 44 on Sunday and it wasn t a holiday weekend. The Seven Peaks Challenge is a Tourism North East initiative and it has brought an extra couple of thousand cyclists into the area during that November to end March period over the last four or five summers. For the Seven Peaks, riders will ride up the following mountains. Mount Beauty to Falls Creek; Porepunkah to Mt Buffalo; Harrietville to Hotham; Omeo to Dinner Plain; Mirimbah to Mt Buller; Marysville to Lake Mountain and Noojee to Mt Baw Baw. Falls Creek officially opened a new trail Greenline a 5km green trail beginners can ride from the ski-field summit to the shores of Rocky Valley Lake. Participants took advantage of the abundance of bike shuttles, skills clinics, demo bikes and a huge beer hall featuring live music and craft beers from the North East s popular local breweries. Mountain biking is booming in popularity with Falls Creek s purpose built 45km trail network one of the most popular bike parks in Victoria. Falls Creek s trails are built to cater to all abilities with 90% of the network suitable for beginner to intermediate riders. And all these trails are complemented by established mountain bike parks in nearby Mount Beauty, Bright and Beechworth. Just three years in, and this (Ignition) event has become one of our most popular weekends on the summer calendar. We see people of all walks of life come to enjoy the alpine village, mountain air, and of course the incredible mountain bike trail network said Jo Prothero (Director Marketing Falls Creek Resort Management) And then there is the Mountain Bike de Femme in February. Now that will be a great weekend! Fly Fishing Nationals The creme de la creme of Australian flyfishers will compete at Falls Creek between 21st and 25th November. About 60 of the very best who have met the criteria to participate in the 2108 national titles are seeking a spot on the team that will represent Australia at the world titles to be hosted by Finland in August 2020 or the Commonwealth Championships in New Zealand in March 2020 This is the pinnacle of the Fly Fish Australia (the body that promotes competition sports fly-fishing in this country) annual calendar of events and Falls Creek has always been one of the more popular locations with the fly-fishing fraternity. Participants in this year s national titles, capped at fly-fishers, will travel from virtually every Australian state in the quest to hook (and release) the brown and rainbow trout population that thrives in picturesque Pretty Valley and Rocky Valley Lakes. They will also cast their lines from the banks of the Kiewa and Mitta Rivers. Former president of the Victorian branch of Fly Fish Australia, Maxim Vereshaka (who has qualified for the Australian five times, twice top rod for Australia and, Victorian state champion four times) says the event s format consists of two loch-style sessions (to mimic how they compete at the world titles) fishing from boats on Rocky Valley Lake, one session from the bank of Pretty Valley Lake, and fly casting sessions on the Mitta River (near Anglers Rest) and one session on the Kiewa River near Mt Beauty. Points are awarded for every rainbow or brown trout that is caught and deemed to be of an appropriate size. At the conclusion of the lake and river sessions, the scores of every entrant in this year s national titles will be calculated and the most successful fly-fishers could be on the plane to Finland or New Zealand. Vereshaka added The Falls Creek Country Club is the base for the key activities throughout the national titles due to its in-house facilities, apartment-style accommodation and its location alongside the Bogong High Plains Road. It is just a short drive to Rocky Valley for the boats that are needed to carry out the loch-style sessions. As we wind our way towards the end of the year, there s a few final races to cover before we sink our mouths into the festive season. First up is the Alpine Challenge, which this year sees record numbers of entrants piling into the larger distances. It s great to see plenty of people sticking their hands up for a crack at some nice tough Alpine terrain. Similarly, let s hope everyone has done their preparation ahead of what is a challenging event and course. Alpine is slightly different to most mountain ultras in that it s an unmarked course, so knowing your shit (as opposed to knowing you re shit) is pretty important. Couple this with some tasty weather expected over the weekend and the big difference between a DNF and a finish will be that key word preparation. Rather than, what does the mandatory gear list say? Ladies 100 miler For the ladies, two names stick out like a sore thumb, both hailing from North of the Vic border in NSW. Lou Clifton and Gill Fowler eat this type of terrain up for breakfast. Throw into the mix another Blue Mountains runner in Anne Bennett, along with Irish lady Karen McMorrow, Madeleine Oldfield and US runner, Elaine Stypula and there s a very competitive ladies field lining up. Men s 100 miler As for the men s 100 miler, leading the list of contenders is Majell Backhausen, who, if starting is likely to win. Although the likes of Campbell Craig and Matt Crehan will do their damnedest to ensure that doesn t happen. We have two Frenchman to whom the term mountain goat is highly appropriate. Thierry Lamarque was third at Bogong to Hotham and loves the rugged, steep stuff. Fellow Frenchman, Yannick Dournel is equally at home in the mountains. As mentioned in our previous edition, it is understood there will be in excess of 350 starters over the four distances 100mile, 100km, 60km and 30km well up on last year s 240 entries. Once again, welcome to all the competing athletes and the supporters and we all hope the weather is not as bad as our bureau predicts. Further details from Gravity Enduro Round Four After competing in Toowoomba for Round One in July, then in Perth for Round Two in August and Round Three at Mt Stromlo in Canberra in September, the athletes all headed to Fox Creek in SA for the Nationals where approximately 200 riders competed. Now, this weekend, about 100 of these guys and gals are descending on Falls Creek for Round Four of the MTBA Gravity Enduro National Season. Over two days, with practice on the Saturday and the main event on the Sunday which should see some serious action. 5 It s Christmas Time Christmas is fast approaching. The celebration of the birth of Christ is a time to think of others and to do things for others. It is really very simple. It is about the act of giving and taking the time to think of your friends and family. The gift does not have to be the biggest or the flashiest or the trendiest. It is a token of the fact that you appreciate your friends and the community around you. One way of showing that you recognise the value of this community is to support the people who support it also. When you look through any list of sponsors for any community event, there are several names always missing. Bunnings, Aldi, Coles, Woollies and Myer are conspicuous by their absence. On a positive note, one local business reported to me the other day that a couple purchased a couple of sizeable Christmas presents for the kids, happy with the purchase and the comment was something like Great, now we don t have to go to Albury! The ABC Checkout program some time back announced that one of the reasons Bunnings can promote and we ll beat it by 10% is that a lot of their items are produced as a particular model, unique to the Bunnings chain and not available in any other stores. Think about it! Our local businesses support the community, offer employment, provide Gift Vouchers, encourage Lay By and look after everyone. At least do them the courtesy of checking them out. 7 Punting on Date Change As we move to 2019, those who have regularly attended the Dederang Races as part of their traditional family/christmas season catch up will notice a big change. For the first time since the 1970s the Dederang Races won t be held on the first Saturday in January. After being abandoned last year due to extreme heat for the first time in its 153-year history, the Club has taken the punt to move the popular Race Day to Saturday 16th March. The change of date has been well received by regular Race goers, jockeys and trainers who have sweltered through the past few years. The promise of a cooler, autumnal race meeting is proving to be a popular move. The Dederang Races is a wonderful way for friends and family to catch up, relax and unwind. The day features a six-race program including the feature event, the Milestone Dederang Cup. The Dederang Races is an important community event for the Upper Kiewa Valley raising thousands of dollars for charity and local community groups. It promises something for everyone with on-ground food options, full bar, strong book-makers ring, TAB, Cheeky Bits Boutique Fashions on the Field, live music and Kelly s Sports providing supervised fun activities for the children. We have 10 dates planned for the summer with the first walk being on the 25th of November. Congratulations Alpine Radio in Mount Beauty won the Outstanding Small Station Award at the Community Broadcasting Association of Australia (CBAA) Conference on the Gold Coast on Saturday night 10th November. There are 450 Community Radio stations nationally and about two thirds of them are in rural or regional areas and this fact makes the competition pretty stiff. The Outstanding Small Station Award celebrates the vital role that small stations play in the community broadcasting sector. They face challenges with fewer facilities ENQUIRIES and people, and levels of initiative and sheer determination tend to be sky high. Alpine Radio broadcasts on frequency 96.5FM into the Kiewa Valley, 92.9FM into the Ovens Valley, 94.5FM into Harrietville, and also streams on to the World Wide Web. At the conference, CEO of the CBAA, Jon Bisset, announced that it is an exciting time to be in community radio, not least due to record breaking national listening audience of 5.7 million listeners per week. 29% of people aged 15 years and over listen to the 450+ community radio services broadcasting local information and news shared by local voices, as well as specialist programming and lots of Australian music.
