2 THE GRAVITY ENDURO What is Gravity Enduro? Well it is pretty much everything we love about riding mountain bikes cruising with your friends and enjoying a good ride together and bombing the descents and being competitive when speeds are high. Basically a Gravity Enduro race is conducted around a designated course that includes uphills and downhills (like any ride really), but in a Gravity Enduro you are only timed over the designated downhill segments and when you get to the bottom your time is stopped and you can ride at your own pace to the top of the next segment and then race downhill again. These time-out segments allow you to wait for your mates and compare stories and then ride on together in a friendly, social scene until it s time to drop the hammer and race downhill again. Most of the time you need to ride uphill to the top of the next descent but some events also provide either a bus+bike shuttles or Open by Appointment For Groups, Clubs etc Phone: Please try to allow 24hours notice. The descents vary in technicality but are generally not as rough or technical as a proper downhill race track and if there are technical sections there is often an easier B-Line so riders of all abilities can get down. Team Mount Beauty hosted the previous round of the Victorian Gravity Enduro Tour on the weekend of 20th and 21st January. Matt Rousu took a heap of excellent shots and provided a great wrap of the event which we published in Edition Seven. With around 180 entries, the weekend s event saw lots of local names appear well up in the winners lists. Now it s Falls Creek s turn and the resort will be hosting Round Three of the series this weekend, Saturday 10th and Sunday 11th February. 3 each downhill section and there are six sections. Cop this for a day out. Liaison One: Slalom Plaza to the Summit race down Thunderbolt. Liaison Two: Along the Aqueduct to Wishing Well race down Wishing Well. Liaison Three: a short rest to Flowtown then race two stages of Flowtown with a short rest in the middle. Then, from Howman s Gap, Liaison Four is a little climb up Road 24 around to the Summit then race down the Summit Home Trail. Liaison Five is then up to and along the Pretty Valley Road and race down Vortex to Slalom Plaza. Not a bad little day out. Local riders and champions Paul van der Ploeg, Chris Panozzo and Ben McIlroy will be racing to take out top spot. Blue Dirt will operate shuttles for practice day on Saturday 10th February but none on Sunday during race day. Costs are $60 per rider per day and bookings are Registrations for the event will still be available on Saturday. The 4th and final round of the Tour will be held as part of the Shimano Bike Buller Festival at Mt Buller on Sat, 10th & Sun, 11th March And if you think the Mountain Bike Season is over put this one in your calendar. Falls Creek will host Round Four of the Mountain Bike Australia 2018 Gravity Enduro Cup on the weekend of Saturday 24th & Sunday 25th November, That will be interesting. Falls Creek XCO Falls Creek Resort and Mountain Bike Park became the series sponsor of the 2017/2018 six race Falls Creek Victorian Mountain Bike Championship Series which was FALLS CREEK XCO Eventual XCO Championship Round Men s Elite winner, Kian Lerch-Mackinnon. Pic Jiri Cech. created to provide a pathway for Victorian riders to improve their racing abilities and speed in preparation for the national scene. With hundreds of participants taking part in the series it bought broad exposure to the mountains trail network and on the Sunday just gone the resort hosted the final round called The Championship round. With placings in the final round counting for double points in the series and $9000 cash being given away there was no shortage of talent in the 100 plus field that took part. With this race being the first time the Falls Creek Mountain bike park has hosted a Cross Country format event riders were unsure of what to expect but come the practice time none were disappointed. Starting from the picturesque Rocky Valley Lake-side area, the track took riders over a 7.3km course with something for everybody. Racing was fierce across all the categories with lots of lead changes and a few sprint finishes to sort it out but when all was done it was clear that there had been one clear winner! Falls Creek. The resort and mountain bike park proved it had a course that could step right up to a national level and we are sure to see more racing of this kind in the future. Spice Trio was formed in 2017 comprising three busy professional Melbourne musicians. Natsuko Mineghishi (soprano) and Kate Stockwin (clarinet) have performed together in recent years and subsequently Tamara Vasilevitsky (piano) has joined to complete this exciting trio. Spice Trio has enjoyed great audience response to its Melbourne performances and is looking forward to touring around regional Victoria. Natsuko is a captivating Japanese singer with multiple facets. 5 Push Start Music Comp The Mount Beauty Youth Crew encourages local young musicians to enter the 2018 FReeZA Push Start Music Comp which is being held on Saturday 21st April as part of the Mount Beauty Music Festival. The Push Start Comp showcases young musicians aged 12 25, giving them the opportunity to perform and earn a place on the Grand Final line up. Local heats are hosted across the state each year from March to August, with the winners going on to compete in Regional Finals from September to December. Winners from the eight regional finals then go onto compete in the grand final held as part of the annual St Kilda Festival in February each year. The Push Start competition is open to any style of music, including bands, soloists, duos, hip hop artists, electronic acts, acoustic acts, etc and is of particular benefit to artists performing original material. 6 FALL LINES Alpine U3A 2018 The University of the Third Age offers activities and courses for those who are 45 years or over and who are also retired or semi-retired. For a small annual membership ($25 for singles, $45 for a couple) members can take part in as many activities as they can fit into their lives. Alpine U3A, based at Mount Beauty, offers activities such as: walking groups; Pilates and stretch sessions; ballroom dancing; table tennis; chess, mah-jong, cards, board games; craft; and also, French and German classes, discussion groups, music appreciation, creative writing, courses on Chemistry, Mathematics, or Politics. There is also a monthly Film Society viewing and regular Coffee Mornings with interesting guest speakers. If you would like to join, come along this Friday 9th or next Friday 16th February to the Senior Citizens hall in Tawonga Crescent, Mount Beauty, at 10am for 10:30am for registration and enrolment in the offered activities and courses. With one round of the home and away series to go, the club is assured of finishing in either second or third place and will compete in the finals for the second year in a row. Commencing next Thursday 15th February, between 4pm and 6pm, the club will be holding a social bowls evening to which all members are invited. Further details from Silva s Shed Silvaro Rossaro is a retired tobacco farmer, known locally to everyone as Silva - who has also farmed a range of goods and livestock. On his property, he has a great big Tobacco Drying Shed, usually known as a Burley Shed. With it not being used for drying tobacco, Silva quite often let people store vehicles and equipment in the shed. But, the time has come for Silva to empty the shed and give it a clean out. If you have something stored in Silvo s shed in Tawonga South, not far up the hill from Flour Plus Water, the suggestion is that you start seriously thinking about moving what-ever it is that you have stored there because it not going to stay there for much longer. 7 Our Toy Library It doesn t take much imagination to see that a young mum with young kids can get pretty busy and possibly even a tad stressed catering to all of the needs of their prized little ones. And the solution is definitely not to stick an ipad in front of them while having a glass of wine with who-ever! Community Psychologist Michael Carr-Gregg has mentioned the fact that High Security Prisoners get more time outside than many kids do these days. Keeping our prized pre-schoolers stimulated and productively happy is the main reason the Mount Beauty Toy Library was set up. Good toys are not cheap and cheap toys are not good and the rapidly developing youngsters will soon grow out of last year s Christmas presents. Hence the obvious common sense of a Toy Library where members can borrow the appropriate toys and return them for more as the kids grow. And it has gone from strength to strength due in no small part to the committee of volunteer mums (and I see a dad or two around also). These wonderful volunteers continue to add to the collection usually with educational items and provide a service for the whole community. Swimming Carnival On a wonderful Upper Kiewa Valley Sunday morning the Mount Beauty Amateur Swimming Club hosted its annual Pennant competition as part of the southern division of the Ovens & Murray District Swimming Association. Clubs attending came from Corryong, Beechworth, Rutherglen, Tallangatta and Myrtleford. Over 200 swimmers participated in 183 events on the day making it the largest attended carnival of the season so far. Continued Page 8. 8 FALL LINES The day was filled with great swimming by all - with most of Mount Beauty swimmers attaining or beating their Personal Best (PB) times. Three (3) records were broken with the Beechworth U14 Medley Relay team breaking a 26-year-old record by six seconds. The other records were produced by Beechworth s U14 mixed team 266m Freestyle relay and Myrtleford s U12 girls in the 133m Freestyle relay.
