2 CAROLS BY CANDLELIGHT With Significant History The beginnings and the history of this Australian tradition are really quite interesting. The fact that a community can get together and spend time singing and celebrating with family and friends is extraordinary. Norman Banks, a 3KZ radio announcer was walking home from his night-time radio shift on Christmas Eve in 1937, when he passed a window and saw an elderly woman inside sitting up in bed, listening to Away in a Manger being played on the radio and singing along, with her face being lit by candlelight. Wondering how many others spent Christmas alone, he had the idea to invite people to a group event and sing Christmas carols together by candlelight. Carols by Candlelight was held in Alexandra Gardens from 1938 to 1958 and then moved to the newly constructed Sidney Myer Music Bowl in It would be a pretty certain bet that not Open by Appointment For Groups, Clubs etc Phone: Please try to allow 24hours notice. Whether it was in the King George Gardens in Wangaratta, in the Sydney Myer Music Bowl in Kings Domain, or outside the Community Centre in Mount Beauty, it doesn t matter. Carols by Candlelight has special significance. Not only did you get to play with a live, yes a real live burning candle dripping down your shirt; but it meant that Santa was coming and Christmas morning was getting closer and closer. The very simple act of getting together without too much formality, relaxing as a community of families and singing some traditional Christmas Carols has a lot of merit and it promotes a family atmosphere so beneficial for the kids and the oldies. We will learn all too early in life that fairy tales aren t real but for a few short years let the kids be kids. Proudly presented by Upper Kiewa Valley Lions Club, this year s Carols will be held on Tuesday 12th December. The venue will be the Mount Beauty Secondary College, A fabulous crowd enjoying our community Carols by Candlelight. The evening will kick off from 6pm with a BBQ and soft drinks, snow cones, popcorn and fairy floss all available. The Carols will kick off at 8pm with local artists and many of our school kids singing all supported by our fabulous community band. The carols will be followed by a visit from Santa Claus. Santa will give out bags of lollies for all the children under 12 years of age. Parents, teachers, mark this in your diary to come along, bring the children and make this a fun night for all. Everyone is encouraged to bring your own blankets, rugs and chairs. After Santa Claus arrives at approximately 9:15, and once lollies have been given to all the children, there will be an extended Carols by Candlelight community singalong. 3 And it Starts at Home The guys from the Men s Shed do a great job of getting the Chrissy decorations up. They re doing them this Sunday. Well done team and much appreciated. Many other organisations are doing their bit also. The team at the Mount Beauty Community Bank branch of the Bendigo Bank have their Christmas Gift Tree in place. Working with Anglicare, the folk are gathering donations for local members of the community a little less fortunate than our selves this Christmas. The UKV Lions Ladies have, at their own cost, put together a fabulous Christmas Hamper, the tickets for which have been sold in the main street for the last few weeks. The draw will take place at Carols on Tuesday evening. As well as the hamper, there are several other great prizes. The shops have been decorated and lots of new stock is hitting the shelves really good looking products that would suit even the most discerning friend or relative. Another fun element to the Christmas shopping is the enjoyment of cruising the shops and checking out the great local product having a chat with other shoppers and the proprietor generally making your Christmas shopping enjoyable as opposed to a rush and a grind. Some Christmas Facts Any regular reader of this publication will be aware of the Editor s attitude towards Shopping Locally. Recent figures from the RACV show that it costs 55.19cents per kilometre to own and run a Kia Cerato 5D Hatchback. That means that a trip to Albury Wodonga shopping (80km each way and 10km running around) 170m will cost you $ Any person who thinks that a trip to Albury is just $20 in fuel is deluding themselves. A Toyota Kluger GX 4D wagon at 86.50cents/km will cost $ for the same trip shopping in Albury. Another item that came to light recently was that on-line shopping was now generating a massive increase of product returns. If you can t see it, feel it, touch it before you buy it, there is every chance you ll be returning it! This paper lists how much our local Mount Beauty Community Bank has returned to the community in its ten years of operation in excess of $450,000 to local organisations. Add to this the $200,000 (approx.) returned to the community by the Mount Beauty Foodworks Spirit of the Community program and we get a total of around $650,000 well in excess of half a million dollars. 5 A Huge Success The recent Gathering of Moth s aircraft fly-in, held on the 25 November, was deemed by all the visitors as being a great event. Approximately 70 aircraft flew in on Friday and Saturday and departed either late Saturday or early Sunday to beat the forecasted rain at their respective home bases. Many of the visitors, some 150 in total, stayed in local motels etc. and about 55 enjoyed Friday night dinner at Settlers Tavern. On-field catering, including Saturday night s Under the Stars dinner and Sunday breakfast was provided by local caterers and was well received. Ten STOL (Short field Take Off and Landing) aircraft flew in from as far away as Rockhampton in Queensland and went on a tour of the area on Saturday morning landing at various remote locations. The same aircraft entertained spectators practicing their STOL skills with landings as short as 47m and typical take-offs in the order of 60m to 70m. The event provides a great opportunity for people to get a close look at the various GATHERING OF THE MOTHS new recreational aircraft coming onto the market with high tech instrumentation and discuss their merits with the owner/pilots. The local radio station enhanced the day with Magnificent Men in their Flying Machines theme music and interviews with interesting visitors including Ryan Cambell, the youngest person to fly solo around the world. Ryan, who was a 19 year old teenager when he took on the challenge, is inspirational in demonstrating determination to achieving ones dreams and has since written a book Born to Fly. The local CFA had their specialised firefighting and rescue equipment on display and explained the functions of the units. Again, the Bright Car Club enhanced the day with their pampered cars! 7 Guided Walks Beginning as an idea for further promotion of our summer trade, the Curated Bush Walks, organised by the Falls Creek Historical Society committee with the fabulous support of Lisa Logan at Diana Lodge have proven to be a huge success. Summer guests (and winter skiers at Falls) on a walk last summer, after a delightful lunch and glass of wine at Cope Hut commented that they had really enjoyed the experience and felt it was the best thing Falls Creek had ever done!
