After a period of quieter conditions, it is heartening to see confidence returning to Western Australia economy and this edition we feature several new retail and hospitality projects. The $43.7 million project was completed in September 2016 and recently won the Best Multi-Unit Development Over $20m Category at the 2017 Master Builders Bankwest Excellence in Construction Awards. Finally, I am delighted to announce our latest principal charity partner is Cancer Council WA. As the State s leading independent, evidence-based cancer organisation, many Western Australian s are aware of the significant work this organisation does to help to combat cancer. 3 FUND BUILD MANAGE BRAND REPOSITIONING SHOWCASES EXPANSION & DIVERSIFICATION Our 40th year has been an opportunity to reposition the Pindan brand to reflect our diversification into a wider range of property activities than was ever envisaged way back in 1977, as well as our expansion across Australia. The centrepiece of our brand repositioning is to highlight the core message to our market that Pindan can FUND, BUILD, MANAGE all forms of property, no matter whether it is on the West or East coasts. We are now deeply involved in every step of the property cycle with projects that span all sectors. 4 I Pindan Outlook Issue 32 In the early years, Pindan s core skills lay solely in construction and undertaking projects for other developers. Over time, we started successfully funding, building and managing property for ourselves and our partners in order to deliver projects that we believed offered great potential and value to our investors and the end purchaser. The Pindan team is proud that they have developed complementary specialist skills and experience in capital raising and funds management; developing, marketing and selling property; as well as the long-term asset management of completed properties. George Allingame, Managing Director, believes that it is Pindan s focus on relationships that has enabled the company to spread its wings and successfully embrace a wider range of property activities. Over the years we have been encouraged by many or our clients to expand our activities in order to help them deliver better projects. We have also been approached by many organisations who have wanted to partner with us in identifying and delivering innovative property investments. We have seized many of these opportunities as part of our long-term diversification strategy and the result is we have many partnerships where Pindan, our clients or our investors have all given each other a helping hand to become bigger and better players in the property industry. This forward-looking investment is now being matched by a significant lift in the confidence of retailers as we near the end of 2017, with a new Commonwealth Bank survey showing that 33% of WA retailers have a favourable outlook for 2018, up from 25% at the start of this year. Pindan Director, David Pringle, said the significant amounts being invested into hotel and retail projects were an optimistic sign for WA because they indicated strong levels of confidence among both investors and the major brands that will be operators and tenants. Our clients would not be investing millions of dollars into the state unless they have a very good sense that they will get a strong return on their funds in a reasonable period of time. We are confident that our new hotel and retail projects are excellent signs that there is strength in the economy and an expectation that growth is returning, said David. 5 Terry Sayers top marks CANCER COUNCIL wa announced as new charity Pindan has selected Cancer Council Western Australia as its new for uwa student accommodation project principal charity partner. Cancer Council WA is the state s leading independent, evidence-based cancer organisation. Through the generosity of the Western Australian community, it funds world-class cancer research, as well as running lifesaving prevention programs such as SunSmart and Make Smoking History, and providing much-needed support to Western Australian families affected by cancer. Pindan Managing Director, George Allingame, said the Pindan team was passionate about raising significant sums of money for worthwhile causes that assisted the community including Pindan has triumphed once again in the Best Multi-Unit Development over $20m Category for its St Thomas More College student accommodation project. The project consisted of the construction of two student accommodation buildings including a five storey building with administration facilities, and a separate split level seven storey building with a lower-ground car park. Both new buildings contain 250 student apartments and are located on Stirling Highway, directly opposite the University of Western Australia s Crawley campus. Construction was finalised for the $43.7 million project in September 2016 and involved the progressive demolition of parts of the existing building, whilst ensuring the existing campus and student accommodation remained operational at all times. The Master Builders Bankwest Excellence in Construction Awards showcase and reward members for demonstrating exceptional craftsmanship, commitment to building excellence, and upholding the highest standard of construction. Judge, Tony Lakis said the Cox Howlett and Bailey designed project was not an easy build due to demanding tolerances in main facades and other parts of the building. From the terrazzo work on the floors to the dado on the reception walls, the site is beautiful with an all encompassing industrial look that is very hard to achieve. Business Development Manager for Pindan, James Allingame, said Pindan secured the award-winning project at St Thomas More College thanks to its extensive portfolio of student accommodation projects, including the neighbouring St Catherine s redevelopment which also houses UWA students and Curtin University s Agricola College in Kalgoorlie. Pindan s own team members and their families. Pindan s culture, built on family values and with its strong focus on partnerships, is a perfect fit for supporting the work of Cancer Council WA do, George said. Pindan s longest serving employee, Terry Sayers, was diagnosed with stage 3 bowel cancer nearly 12 months ago. Being diagnosed was devastating, both for me and my family. While friends are always supportive, sometimes you need more: you need information, advice and help to navigate the long road ahead. The Cancer Council with their nurses, information booklets and counsellors were always there, at the end of a phone. Knowing where to go for advice, and how to deal with the changes in our lives, was invaluable. The support we ve had from Pindan, both as a company and from its individual employees has been amazing. Once you re part of the Pindan family, you never seem to be alone, Terry said. Cancer Council WA CEO Ashley Reid said he was delighted that Pindan has chosen to support Cancer Council WA. As a community-funded organisation, we rely on the generosity and support of both individuals and companies like Pindan. We thank Pindan for their generous support which will help us to continue our important work in bringing the defeat of cancer closer, Ashley said. 6 SUPER SUBBIE BA & TJ MOURITZ It s been more than 20 years since metal deck roofer Barry Mouritz began working for Pindan, helping to complete the first construction project for the group in WA s south west the expansion of Margaret River Senior High School in Barry Mouritz (left) and Pindan Project Manager Jayson Baillie Since then the team at BA & TJ Mouritz has completed countless projects for Pindan including recent works at Kalgoorlie Boulder Community High School and Curtin University Accommodation in Kalgoorlie, many stages of St Mary MacKillop College in Busselton; Cape Care in Busselton and Dunsborough Primary School. Barry has been in business for 40 years and the company has been based in the Busselton/Dunsborough area since Offering a range of metal roofing services for commercial, government, industrial and private clients, Barry says he is backed by a team of highly skilled sub-contractors, many of whom have worked with him for 15 to 20 years, including his son, Nathan, who also has his own roofing business. We are proud to have an experienced crew, have been in the game for many years and try to work to the best of our ability with clients, Barry said when asked about the company s longrunning success. Barry adds that it has been a pleasure working with Pindan for so long. South West Construction Manager for Pindan, Gavin Bell, says the feeling is mutual. Barry s extensive experience has been of great assistance to us as he is always willing to raise any potential design issues early to avoid any problems that may arise later, he said. Word on how super Barry is must have travelled as BA & TJ Mouritz have also worked on a number of projects for Pindan in the north west too. Gavin says Barry s exceptional craftsmanship is evident in the small details, such as the time he was installing costly Zinc cladding panels for Pindan at The Shack, a private coastal residence. The panels were pressed in Perth and then folded and bent on site, Gavin said. Barry purchased a small bending machine to use on site to help ensure the material made up of 97 per cent Zinc was installed correctly as it is extremely expensive. We have contracted to Pindan for two decades and have found them to be very well organised, with good supervisors, and are a good company to deal with, he said. Pindan Outlook Issue 32 I 10
