2 NORTHEASTERN ICE ASSOCIATION Dear Association Members, It s that time again, time to take a break and look forward to relaxing from a very busy summer in the northeast. I m writing to remind everyone that this fall s Northeastern Ice Association Convention will be held at the beautiful award winning WESTIN ANNAPOLIS HOTEL, located right in the heart of Annapolis, Maryland. This is the perfect location for a fall convention. We have done everything possible to keep costs low, while providing excellent accommodations in a prime location that will allow you to enjoy all this area has to offer. One of the exciting highlights of this year s meeting is the chance to hear great speakers from the Naval Academy and Georgetown University! The meeting will also include round table discussions on industry topics that will be sure to give you new insight into the industry trends and ways to better manage your businesses. Our annual business meeting, along with fun filled afternoon and evening events will round out our convention. Combine this with time with our suppliers and other industry friends and you have a great meeting to look forward to. This is a great time to learn more about your association. After the great summer season we have had what better way to relax than at the Boating Capital of the Chesapeake, within walking distance of great shopping and great seafood, can you say Maryland Crab! 3 Convention Highlights Annapolis, Maryland Annapolis, Maryland has been welcoming visitors for over 300 years. The sightlines in Annapolis are punctuated by colonial spires and white sails. Every walk through the narrow alleyways of Maryland's capital is a journey back to the 18th-century. The city's wellpreserved cobblestone streets and squat, brick red Colonial architecture may inspire you to dust off your tricorne and square buckled shoes. A maritime life flows at the rhythm of the tides, evidenced by schools of yacht traffic bobbing at the waterfront or Naval Academy midshipmen strolling downtown. During the fall, the bars and restaurants of City Dock feel like one big boating party, lit by the blaze of sunset on the Chesapeake Bay. Come indoors to the local pubs for an earful of sea lore and a pint. The Rams Head Tavern will fill your glass with Fordham beer, a local craft brewer. Stick around for a set of folk music. Every night of the week, 49 West Coffeehouse, Winebar & Gallery hosts music -- jazz, classical, or folk. Welcome to a seafood pantry of plenty. The centerpiece here in the Chesapeake Bay is the blue crab and boaters swear by the fresh catches at Cantler's Riverside Inn, where we will be enjoying a wonderful feast! Learn to sail from the pros: The Annapolis Sailing School is the oldest in America and offers programs for novices and experts alike. If you'd rather be a passenger, board a 74-foot schooner for a tour of the Chesapeake (OUR PUB CRAWL WITH A TWIST!). Landlubbers can take in a ghost tour of the city and its many haunts or a stroll through the terraced gardens of the Charles Carroll House. At noon, the midshipmen line up in formation for inspection -- a visitor's highlight. And who can resist the beautiful harbor setting of our hotel, the outstanding food and shopping, not to mention the fact that fall is in the air. What a great place to have our 2016 Northeastern Ice Association Convention, and October is the ideal time to be there. Getting There: Annapolis is a wonderful city, easy to drive to for many of our members. It is located on the Chesapeake Bay close to Baltimore and the DC area. Amtrak offers great routes from the Northeast, as well as reasonable flights are available. Even to drive from Boston is only 6 ½ hours, only 3 ½ hours from New York City. Arriving By Plane -- Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (tel. 800/I-FLY-BWI [ ] or 410/ ; is 24 miles north of Annapolis, off I-295 (the Baltimore-Washington Pkwy.). Domestic airlines serving BWI include American (tel. 800/ ; Continental (tel. 800/ ; Delta (tel. 800/ ; Northwest (tel. 800/ ; Southwest (tel. 800/ ; United (tel. 800/ ; and US Airways (tel. 800/ ; To get to Annapolis from the airport, follow I-97 south to U.S. Route 50. Various exits will take you into town (although many chain hotels are right off Rte. 50). The Rowe Boulevard exit is the most direct one to the historic district. SuperShuttle (tel. 800/ ; charges about $30 between BWI and Annapolis. A taxi is about $45 one-way; call BWI Airport Taxi at tel. 410/ By Train -- Amtrak and three Annapolis-area shuttle services have teamed up to make it easier to come to Annapolis by train. For about $26, a shuttle will take Amtrak passengers from the BWI terminal directly to their hotel or other destination in the Annapolis area. Reservations are required. For details or the reservation link, go to the Northeast Corridor timetable at Amtrak has great service to Baltimore Station from the northeast, for instance from Boston it is a 6 ½ hour train ride, arriving around 1:30 pm! Rates are very reasonable and this is a fun way to see the country during fall foliage time! Meeting Highlights: Sunday, October 23 Wednesday, October 26 This year our convention will kick off on Sunday, October 23 rd with our welcome reception with our suppliers. Monday, October 24 th sessions will include our annual NIA business meeting, where you will be updated on the business of the association for , followed by our special speaker from the Naval Academy. Tuesday will bring opportunities for you to hear a keynote speaker and enjoy one of NIA s favorite formats, our Round Table Discussion, sure to hit on industry topics of interest to all.

5 Optional Activity Sailing Micro Brews Pub Crawl & Crab Feast: Monday, October 24 What NIA Convention would be complete without an afternoon networking event enjoying a favorite NIA activity, our signature pub crawl in memory of Rob Bould. But this year with a wonderful twist! We will be sailing on the beautiful Chesapeake Bay while enjoying local micro brews and wine, along with light appetizers (we don t want to ruin your appetite for the evening crab feast). This event will end at the dock of Cantler s Riverside Inn where you will enjoy an included crab feast dinner as part of convention registration. NOTE: If you do not wish to participate in the optional sailing pub crawl you will be responsible for your own transportation to Cantler s, which is about a 10 minute ride from the hotel. Tours: Tuesday, October 25 Included In Registration As part of your convention registration you will have a really special opportunity to visit the Naval Academy for a private NIA tour. Tucked behind Annapolis's historic district, standing proudly on the Severn River, the United States Naval Academy (USNA) has been educating future naval officers for more than 160 years. We will visit Bancroft Hall, the world's largest dorm, and walk through the grounds. The crisply restored Chapel displays Bibles belonging to Commodore John Barry and Admiral David Farragut. In the undercroft is the marble Crypt of John Paul Jones, along with his swords and many medals. During the American Revolution, the commodore was the first to hoist the colors of the new nation over a flagship. We will also visit The Naval History Museum in Preble Hall, with displays of naval officers, swords, medals, and other artifacts, as well as stunning ship models from the 16th to the 19th century. Famous admirals, astronauts, and one president (Jimmy Carter) have memorable exhibits. The War of 1812 flag proclaiming "Don't Give Up the Ship," which hung for decades in Bancroft Hall, is shown here. A definite highlight of the tour will be seeing all the cadets line up for review at noon! Our final evening will be a wonderful one as we enjoy a great meal together. Support the association and our officers and board as we celebrate with a closing convention dinner to honor our current president, Bruce Hanson and welcome our new President, Craig Rossi. Our dedicated board will also be celebrated at this fun evening event. Tonight you will feast on some of the area s best food! Two drink coupons are included to top off the enjoyment!
