2 City of St. John s 2018 Monument Inventory An initial monument inventory was completed in January 2007 and noted in excess of 40 municipally owned, historic monuments with an estimated value of $6,000,000. These monuments are located in City parks and open spaces. An updated monument inventory was completed in February 2018 and includes new monuments, updated locations of monuments from the 2007 inventory and was expanded to include significant markings, such as bronze plaques and natural features that commemorate or memorialize various events, anniversaries and individuals. These monuments are located on City land, parks, open spaces, road rights of way, and City buildings, whose repair and maintenance responsibility lays with the City. For further clarification, this most recent inventory does not include Provincial or National monuments (War Memorial, Provincial/National Historic Sites), monuments on Church grounds, private property, cornerstones on private buildings, bridge abutments, or story boards on City owned land, parks and trails. Monuments inventoried in this report are presented alphabetically by ward, with wards 2 and 5 having additional sub-groupings for those monuments found in Bannerman and Bowring Park respectively. 12 Alcock and Brown Monument (Brookfield Dairies) Brookfield Dairies, Lemarchant Road On June 14,1919 Captain John Alcock, R.A.F. and Lieutenant Arthur Brown, R.A.F. starting from Lester s Field, St. John s, NL made the first successful non-stop transatlantic flight, landing on a bog at Clifden, Ireland, 16 hours and 12 minutes after takeoff. Three monuments were installed in their honour; two (2) on Lemarchant Road, and one (1) on Blackmarsh Road. 12

15 American Legion Monument The Boulevard - Legion Road Intersection In honour of the thousands of U.S. military personnel, and over 20,000 Newfoundland civilians who served in St. John s and other U.S. bases and sites in Newfoundland over a 50 year period,

16 Ayre Athletic Grounds Adam s Avenue To commemorate the 116 th anniversary year of the founding of the Methodist Guard Bridge, forerunner of the Guards Athletic Association. 16

24 Ethel Dickensen Cavendish Square, opposite main entrance of the Sheraton The shaft surmounted by the World Emblem of Sacrifice acknowledges the memory of Ethel Dickensen, a volunteer nurse. She died while tending patients of the great epidemic of 1918, at the King George V Institute, St. John s. 24

25 Father Walsh s Hill Queen s Road Signify the route used to transport the materials used in the construction of the Basilica. Father Kyran Walsh was instrumental in this task. 25

26 Fire Bell Plaque New Gower Street, City Hall Skywalk Pillar To commemorate the loan of the Fire Bell of 1878 to the citizens of St. John s. 26

27 Fort Townshend - Sir John Harvey Monument Harvey Road Bonaventure Avenue, at Fort Townshend Designated as a National Historic Site in Fort Townshend was completed in Military Road linked Fort Townshend and Fort William. Fort Townshend was the headquarters of the Newfoundland Garrison until

29 Harbourside Park Water Street East Commemorates the significance of Admiral s Beach/King s Queen s Wharf during the 400 years since Sir Humphrey Gilbert proclaimed Britain s ownership of Newfoundland. 39 Moses Monroe Victoria Park Water Street Installed in 1897 to commemorate the esteem in which the citizens of the City held Moses Monroe, a business leader. 39

40 Nuclear Weapons Free Zone Plaque New Gower Street, City Hall Skywalk Pillar To commemorate the declaration by the United Nations of 1986 as International Peace Year, and the decision of the St. John s council to make St. John s a Nuclear Weapons Free Zone. 40

41 O Brien Park Signal Hill Road - Battery Road Intersection Commemorates the O Brien Family that lived at the site. Four members of the family lost their lives while serving in the Royal and Merchant Navies during World War II. Their mother, Margaret O Brien, was recognized as the most bereaved mother for World War II. 41

51 St. Thomas Anglican Church Monument 8 Military Road St. Thomas' Church is historically valuable as the oldest church in St. John s as well as the oldest, continually used Anglican Church in Newfoundland, having survived both Great Fires of the 19th century. Built in 1836, the land for the church was secured by Governor Sir Thomas Cochrane with the stipulation that space in the church be reserved for officers and troops of the nearby Garrison. St. Thomas served as the Garrison church from 1837 until 1871 when the British Garrison in St. John's closed. St. Thomas' is also valuable for its association with Bishop Aubrey Spencer who commissioned the church and consecrated it in

53 Terry Fox Memorial Harbourside Park, Water Street Commemorate the start of the Terry Fox Marathon of Hope, across Canada run to increase awareness of cancer and to raise funds for research. The run began 1000 m east of the site of the plaque, on April 12,

55 Tommy Ricketts Memorial Water Street - Job Street Intersection The youngest soldier, at the age of 18, to ever receive the Victoria Cross. After the war Tommy Ricketts became a pharmacist and lived a quiet life in St. John's. He died in

65 Peace Grove Bannerman Park at Circular Road Dedicated by Governor General Ramon Hnatyshyn and Mayor Shannie Duff, September 17, 1992, in conjunction with Peace Parks across Canada and part of the CANADA 125 celebrations. Peace Parks across Canada resulted in the dedication of more than 400 peace parks in cities, towns, and villages across Canada. Most of the parks were dedicated on October 8th, 1992, at the same hour the National Peacekeeping Monument was being dedicated in the Canadian capital city of Ottawa. 65

97 Caribou Bowring Park, Waterford Bridge Road The bronze, life size caribou monument commemorates the heroism of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment in WW1. The Caribou is the official insignia of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment. A gift to the park by Major Howe Green and sculpted by Brazil Gotto. It was unveiled July 1, 1928 and is a replica of the one at Beaumont Hamel, France. It was placed in memory of Newfoundland soldiers who gave their lives in the WW1, July 1 st Battle of Beaumont Hamel. 97

98 Commemorative Tree Planting Waterford Bridge Road - Park Road The program that encourages residents to plant a tree to memorialize the loss of a loved one, birth of a child, or special event. Trees are planted throughout the City and recognized at this site. 98

99 Confederation Monument Waterford Bridge Road, Bowring Park Promote national unity by creating a site similar to one in the nation s capital. 99

100 The Connaught Stone Bowring Park, Waterford Bridge Road The truly spectacular linden tree was planted by His Royal Highness, the Duke of Connaught, during the Park's official opening on July 15, In front of the tree sits the Gnome, designed to commemorate the tree planting. This small bronze sculpture was designed by Major William Howe Green (the man responsible for the impressive Caribou monument). Major Howe presented the idea and design to Sir Edgar Bowring, who, in turn, commissioned the renowned British sculptor Edmund Blundstone to create it. The Gnome was unveiled at Bowring Park on August 31, An original work, it depicts the little gnome at his writing board just finishing the inscription, which reads: Lime Tree Planted by His Royal Highness the Duke of Connaught on the Occasion of the opening of Bowring Park. The Gnome is placed on top of a piece of native granite called the Connaught Stone. 100

101 Edward Shapter Playground Bowring Park In memory of Dr. Edward Shapter, a medical pioneer, who enhanced the lives of disabled children in Newfoundland and Labrador. 101

102 Fighting Newfoundlander Bowring Park, Waterford Bridge Road Sculpture created by Basil Gotto, using Thomas Pittman as his model, to commemorate the Royal Newfoundland Regiment. Donated to Bowring Park by Sir Edgar Bowring, September 13,

104 Girl Guides 100th Anniversary Bowring Park Commemorating 100 years of great guiding in Canada. 104

105 Peter Pan Bowring Park, Duck Pond The Peter Pan Monument was donated to Bowring Park by Sir Edgar R. Bowring, in memory of his little granddaughter, Betty Munn. Betty Munn was just four years old when she and her father perished aboard the S.S. Florizel which was bound for Halifax on February 23, Bowring Park's Peter Pan is one of six such monuments in the world. The original is located in London's Kensington Gardens, and the other five replicas are located in Brussels (Belgium), St. John's (Canada), Camden (United States), Perth (Australia), and Liverpool (England). 105
