2 July 1, 2018 Today is Memorial Day and Canada Day. St. John s is the Oldest City in North America and the Youngest City in Canada. The sunrise ceremony took place at 6 am on the Signal Hill. Canada is marking 151 years and Newfoundland and Labrador is marking 69 years as part of Canada. In the morning NL marked Memorial Day. Today, July 1 st. we mark the 102 nd. Anniversary of the most significant losses in Newfoundland s history, On this day in Members of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment went over the top at Beaumont Hamel on the first day of the Battle of the Somme straight into the gunfire of German soldiers (700 solders lost their lives). This is the anniversary of the Battle of Beaumont-Hamel and Memorial Day service was held at the National War Memorial. Part of today s Memorial Day ceremonies at the National War Memorial included the unveiling of a plaque in honour of Thomas Nangle, the Padre of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment in WWI. Nangle was behind the Trail of the Caribou, a series of caribou monuments marking the major battle sires involving the regiment in the First World War. The plaque, located on the South-west corner of the National War Memorial is surrounded by Forget-Me-Nots the flower of remembrance for Newfoundlanders and Labradoreans. The Signal Hill Tattoo gave a historical animation performance to demonstrate the legacy of the 19 th century British military strength in St. John s and the importance of the area s military history. JOHN S HARBOUR TODAY IN PICTURES MV CSCL Globe arriving at the Port of Felixstowe, England, during its maiden voyage in January MV CSCL Globe is a container ship owned and operated by China Shipping Container Lines (CSCL). The first of a class of five ships intended for Asia-Europe trade routes, she was the largest container ship in the world at the time of her launch in November 2014, with a maximum capacity of 19,100 twenty-foot containers. The 21,000+ TEU (20-foot equivalent unit) COSCO Shipping Universe has broken the record for China s largest container ship and is equipped with ABB turbochargers to assure optimal performance and fuel efficiency. 5 August 24, 2018 Another passenger ship visit Aida Vita, Genova On September 3 rd. 1939, at the commencement of World War II, this province had its own Newfoundland Registered Merchant Ships. But Newfoundlanders, being the seafarers they are, were already serving and continued to serve on Merchant ships of Britain, Canada and other Allies. They served, not only in home waters, but in all areas of the worls. During WWII, over 333 Newfoundland Merchant seamen, including one woman, lost their lives. Canada lost over 70 ships and 2000 Merchant Navy Personnel, including 8 women radio officers and stewardesses. The Merchant Navy lost 1 in 8 persons, or at the peak of the Battle of the Atlantic, 1 in 4 more personnel lost than the armed forces. On the background, the Rooms and the Basilica of St. John the Baptist September 13, 2018 Today the Merchant Navy Memorial Service was held in front of the Merchant Navy Memorial at the Marine Institute of Memorial University of Newfoundland. In Canada the designated date as Merchant Navy Veterans Day is September 3 rd. In St. John s this is organized jointly by the Canadian Merchant Navy Veterans Association, the Marine Institute and the Company of Master Mariners of Canada NL Division. After the war, some veterans continued their careers at sea while others found jobs and careers ashore. With true Merchant Navy modesty, they faded into the background. It was not until recent years that their war efforts, fortitude, and sacrifice were to be recognized. In 1995, a small committee of Merchant Navy Veterans met and decided to erect a Memorial. And they obtained the cooperation and assistance of Government and other bodies. The result is the Memorial you see today. In 2003, the House of Commons and the Senate approved Bill C-411 and it has received Royal Assent, thus September 3 rd. of each year will be recognized as Merchant Navy Veterans Day, throughout Canada and similar to many other Commonwealth Countries. 6 The Memorial was unveiled on August 29 th and lists 333 Newfoundland Merchant Navy Personnel who lost their lives, as well as the ships that sunk in the area. On this 21 st. Anniversary of this memorial unveiling, we should, once again, remember the sacrifices of these men and women. WE WILL REMEMBER THEM. Back, L-R: Larry Moore, Roy Marsh, Victor March and A. Zaki. September 13, 2018 After the lovely summer break the regular monthly meeting took place at the Crow s Nest Officers Club. There was a very good attendance including a good number of the first year nautical science students from the Marine Institute. The Divisional Master Captain Eben March discussed the upcoming Symposium and the National Annual General Meeting (AGM) taking place this time in Saint John NB. Ms Maria Halfyard discussed the new Nautical Skills Competition (NSC) web site. Ms Halfyard is the voluntary Coordinator of this NSC since it started in She is an Associate Member of the Division. The web site was shown on the screen to show all attendees what is looked like. She said that it will be accessible very soon. Capt. 8 Work Report from Dylan May I spent 6-weeks this summer as a third-year cadet on the PGS seismic survey vessel Ramform Hyperion, which I really enjoyed. We were working approximately 200 miles off the coast of Newfoundland. The Hyperion is the widest ship in the world with a 70m beam, so is therefore very stable. The ship was incredible and I was given lots of responsibility by the Officers and Captain. They had me lead many toolbox talks and do presentations including teaching SOLAS training to the crew, they even had me prepare the handover report for the second officers. It was an amazing time and I learned so much. I was also asked to work in the workboat during crew changes. The workboat transports the crew on and off the vessel to and from the supply boat, the Thor Magni. It was an amazing cadet experience, the crew was fantastic and I learned so much. Crew Transfer I signed off the Hyperion on Friday, Sept. 7 and now I am flying to Bodø Norway on September 18 to join the Cable Layer, IT Intrepid for the next 3 months. The IT Intrepid is owned by International Telecom, a Canadian company, and travels all over the world laying Fibre Optic Cable on the ocean floor. From Norway, we will be sailing to Puerto Rico and then on to the west coast of the US. I am looking forward to experiencing the Northern Lights while I am above the Arctic Circle and then the trip to Puerto Rico, where we will work for a while before going through the Panama Canal and eventually up to California. 9 cruises through the Eastern Canadian Arctic and West Coast of Greenland. The 123 metre long Hapag Lloyd Cruise Line ship carried 168 passengers (mostly German) and 127 crew (German Officers / Phillipine crew). The MS Hanseatic is ice strengthened and certified for operations in the Arctic in accordance to the recently ratified IMO Polar Code. Bridge Hyperion Bridge MS Hanseatic disembarking passengers in Jones Sound, Ellesmere Island. Due to extremely challenging ice conditions this past season, the ship's itinerary had to be readjusted. Passage plans west of Prince Regent Inlet had to be aborted by all expedition cruise ships operating in the Eastern Arctic this past season, due to large concentrations of Thick First Year and Old Ice through Bellot Strait and Peel Sound to Larsen Sound. Capt. Drew McNeill s Report from the Arctic (We would like to thank Capt. McNeill for this report) MS HANSEATIC TRIP SUMMARY Captain Andrew McNeill accepted an Ice Navigator assignment on board the Expedition Cruise Ship MS Hanseatic during the past Arctic navigation season. 10 2018 Symposium - MMC AGM The Company of Master Mariners of Canada (CMMC) Annual General Meeting (AGM) took place in Saint John NB this year. September 14 th there was a Symposium and the AGM and Board Meetings on the 15 th and 16 th. The venue was the Diamond Jubilee Cruise Terminal for both. Stopped to view a large floe of multi-year ice Prince Regent Inlet Regardless, of difficult conditions the passengers experienced scenery and zodiac landings to different sites within the eastern Arctic every day. Zodiac excursion around field of Icebergs at mouth of Jakobshavn Fjord, Greenland This ship has successfully completed many Arctic and Antarctic Expedition cruises since 1994, but this was her last under the name Hanseatic. Effective October 2018 she will be renamed RCGS Resolute and sail under the new ownership. Hapag Lloyd Cruise Lines currently has three new expedition vessels under construction with a PC6 ice classification.
