1 November 2014 Vol. 5 Issue: 11 From e President s Desk Durability of concrete structures is a major concern all over e World and particularly in India. Lack of durability may be due to : Poor construction practices Lack of maintenance Defects due to faulty design and detailing Damages due to earquake, fire etc. Deterioration of concrete structures in aggressive environments Some of e key areas at need attention is: - Consideration of durability while designing a concrete mix - Test meods to ensure durability - Incorporation of materials in concrete towards reducing its porosity and ereby improving its durability. - Review of environmental exposure condition as laid down in codes - Codal provisions to ensure durability - Performance based specification - Performance record of structure nd ICI has already taken initiatives to address e above issues. The 2 International Congress on Durability of Concrete, ICDC 2014 was held at New Delhi, from 4 to 6 December, 2014 in association wi Norwegian Concrete Association. The event was conducted successfully by ICI New Delhi Centre. Around 300 Delegates from different Countries and India participated in e Congress. The deliberations in e Congress will furer be taken into consideration in ICI Technical Committee on Durability of Concrete. ICI has taken initiative to have a more spacious office space which has been felt imperative for its overall functioning. One of e major constraints is e fund for purchasing e proposed office space. Several ways for generation of fund is being explored. Meanwhile, I request all ICI Members / Well wishers to donate money for e proposed ICI HQ building. A separate Building Fund A/c has been created in e name "Indian Concrete Institute Building Fund", ICICI Bank, SB A/c No: , IFSC: ICIC , Branch: Cenotaph Road, Chennai, and donations can be deposited directly to is account. Concrete Day : Concrete Day was celebrated by ICI- Karnataka Bengaluru Centre in association wi UltraTech Cement Ltd., on 12 September 2014 at NIMHANS Convention Centre. More an 1000 people from Construction Industry, Builders, Consulting Engineers, Architects, Academicians, Researchers, Members of ICI, and Students attended is mega event. Dr. R. Nagendra, Chairman, ICI-KBC welcomed e gaering and briefed about e Concrete Day celebrations. On is occasion, a special UltraTech Concrete Day Quiz was conducted for ICI Students Chapters in Karnataka. Concrete Day Awards were given. Ltd., B e n g a l u r u organized a Product Awareness and Interaction Program on Recent Trends in Waterproofing at BIT Seminar Hall, Bengaluru on 8 November Mr. M.N. Ramesh was e Guest Speaker. Dr. Aswa M.U., Professor, BIT Bangalore, welcomed e gaering. The presentation focused on various waterproofing technologies in vogue across e globe wi specific reference to technologies adopted by Koster. Technical Presentation: RMCMA, ACCE(India), ICI-KBC and Bangalore Institute of Technology, Bengaluru had organized a Technical Lecture and Interaction Program at BIT, Bengaluru on 10 October The topic was "Indo Norwegian Collaborative Project towards Urban Earquake Resilience in Indian Subcontinent - Earquake Hazard and Risk Reduction" and a lecture was delivered by Dr. Abdelghani, Researcher, Earquake Engineering, NORSAR, Norway. The event was anchored by Mr. N.R. Ashok. Dr. Aswa M.U. briefed about Speaker. The lecture was well attended by more an 100 members, Fellow Members, Engineers / Builders and students from various organizations at BIT, Bengaluru. Concrete Day : ICI Puducherry Centre in association wi UltraTech Cement Ltd., conducted e ICI-UltraTech Awards 2014 at Hotel Anandha Inn, Puducherry on 19 September 2014 involving e regions in e Union Territory of Puducherry, Cuddalore, Villupuruam, Trichy and Tanjore Districts of Tamil Nadu. Nominations were called for, under ree categories (Residential, Public Utility/ Commercial Building and Infrastructural Projects). More an 120 nominations were received from Promoters, Builders, Consultants, Architects, Engineers, Government Departments in Puducherry and Tamil Nadu. Er. S. Suresh, Chairman, ICI-Puducherry Centre welcomed e gaering and highlighted e activities of Puducherry Centre. Senior officials of ICI- Head Quarters viz., Er. R. Radhakrishnan, Secretary General, Er. Aravindan, Former Professor, IIT Madras was e Chief Guest & Keynote Speaker. The ICI UltraTech Endowment Awards were given away in an impressive ceremony held at Hotel Dream, Kochi and over 465 Engineers, Architects, Academicians, Constructors, and Students took part in e function. In addition to Outstanding Concrete Engineer of Kerala Award, ICI UltraTech Endowment Awards were given away for six different categories of Outstanding Concrete Structures viz., 1. (Kerala Industrial and Technical Consultants Organisation Ltd) (Govt. Of Kerala Undertaking) conducted Technical Talk to Masons, Bar Benders, Concrete Formwork Persons, Concreting Labourers, Supervisors and Local Contractors on Good Construction Practices, between April 2014 and August 2014 in e Districts of Kollam and Triruvananapuram at 24 different locations. A total of 1200 workers attended e Technical talk. ICI - PUNE CENTRE Concrete Talk : ICI Pune Centre organized a Technical Lecture in association wi M/s. Ambuja Cement Ltd. on 11 November 2014 at Navalmal Firodiya Hall, Pune. Er. C M Dordi, Consultant, Ambuja Cement Ltd. delivered a lecture on High performance concrete. He explained e application of various innovative materials in making High Performance Concrete. He quoted several examples us making e audience fully understand e design of High Performance Concrete. COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING - BENGALURU Concrete Fair 2014: Concrete Fair is a unique and first of its kind event organized by Department of Civil Engineering, RVCE in association wi ICI- Karnataka Bengaluru Centre. The ird edition of is annual technical event was organized to disseminate recent advances in e field of concrete technology to e students from across e State. It also aimed to create a platform for exchange of ideas on e new trends in civil engineering. 360 students had registered to Concrete Fair Nearly 21 colleges from all over Karnataka participated in e event. About 100 students were from outside Bengaluru. Outstation students were provided wi free accommodation at various locations of Bengaluru. All students were provided wi free breakfast, lunch and snacks on bo days. Inaugural ceremony was held on 28 October 2014 at Sir M.V. Seminar Hall. Prior to e ceremony a minute's silence was observed to mourn e sad demise of Dr.C.S Viswanaa, e Doyen of structural and civil engineering. Mr. K.P. Paulson, Vice-President, Ardex Endura India Pvt. University lighted e inaugural lamp along wi oer Dignitaries. Dr S.V. Venkatesh, Professor & Head, Dept of Civil Engineering welcomed e gaering. Dr. K.S. Sridhar, Principal, PESIT informed e gaering about e grow of PES Institutions. Dr. K.N. Balasubramanya Mury spoke on e occasion about e importance of such activities and e need for engineering students and engineering colleges to interact wi professional bodies to gain contact wi working professionals and also to know e latest research trends. Dr R. Nagendra, Chairman, ICI-KBC, spoke on e activities of ICI-KBC. Mr. Ajit Sabnis, Managing Director, Built Expressions, Incicon-AG, delivered a Guest Lecture on Emerging Trends in Building Materials. He enlightened e students about e importance of a Civil Engineer, an Architect and e versatile nature of Cement and Concrete as construction materials. Mr. N.R. 13 News from ICI Students Chapters Contd.. Prize Winners awarded by Dr. V Ramachandra & Prof. H Sharada Bai Audience Dignitaries on e Dias SHARDA UNIVERSITY - NOIDA 1. Site Visit : rd The 3 year students of Civil Engineering were taken to Ambuja Knowledge Centre of Ambuja Cements Ltd., on 19 September 2014 at Gurgaon. A total of 32 students along wi 2 faculty members visited AKC. Students were briefed about Cement and Self Compacting Concrete. The Workshop started wi a brief introduction on cement industry and its purpose and en a quick briefing about Ambuja Cement and Ambuja initiative on concrete designing and development of Self Compacting Concrete. The whole workshop sequentially dealt wi types of cement, process adopted in making cement, types of concrete and more specifically on S.C.C., testing of concrete and e research work being carried out. The AKC engineers addressed to several queries of e students and also gave em various useful information on Mix Design Meodologies. The workshop was a successful one, and well received by students. Site Visit : On 7 November 2014, about 35 Students of Civil Engg Department were taken to Signature Bridge site to learn e processes and techniques adopted in e construction of upcoming landmark of New Delhi. The site is situated on Yamuna River at Wazirabad, New Delhi. It is a bow-shaped, cable-supported steel bridge modeled on e London Bridge to be built as a tourist attraction. M/s.Gammon India Ltd. and two firms from Italy and Brazil are associated wi Delhi Tourism and Transport Development Corporation(DTTDC) to construct is bridge. The visit was conducted as per complete protocol of e site. The students were first given safety helmets, and 10-minute safety instructions. The whole bridge site was visited in a sequence, along wi e site engineer. He initially informed e students about e signature bridge, its unique design and fabrication, construction meodology, problems related to its construction and e uniqueness of e modern marvel of Delhi. The site engineers answered several queries of e students and also gave em useful information on several practical aspects. The visit was a good learning experience. NANDHA COLLEGE OF TECHNOLOGY, ERODE 1. Guest Lecture : Guest lecture on 'Applications of Fluid Mechanics in Civil Structure' was organized by ICI Students Chapter in association wi CEA on 19 September Prof. A.Thirumurugan, MIE.,(Ph.D), CMS College of Engineering, Namakkal and Mr.S.Saishkumar, Site Engineer, Sabari Construction Technologies Pvt. Ltd., Kelambakkam, Chennai were e resource persons. Prof. A.Thirumurugan explained e Practical Applications of Fluid Mechanics. The lecture was about basic concepts of fluid flow and e real time fluid mechanics applications. It included e construction of major reservoir projects in e world, Irrigation networks alignment, erection and flow rough pipes. ICI Update - November

Saishkumar gave an insight into various site related issues, types of concrete mixtures, safety precautions in construction site, labour related issues, setting of cement, dampness of floorings, vibrators and eir uses, pile foundations, damages due to improper mix of concrete, cracks and eir causes, types of columns, moulds and eir types. Students understood e real time applications of fluid mechanics and problems faced at e construction site. 2. Industrial Visit : ICI Students Chapter members organized an Industrial visit to Leisure Homes Pvt. Ltd. Kerala on 20 September Students visited e offshore building construction site and learned about e types of foundations used in construction, types of bars used in columns and beams etc. The site engineer explained well about e concrete grades and e types of concrete mixes. In e afternoon session, Students were taken to Dutch Palace to acquire knowledge on ancient Structures. 3. Interdepartmental meet : Interdepartmental meet was conducted on behalf of e Civil Engineering Association rd and ICI Students Chapter on 23 September Various events like Paper Presentation, Poster Presentation, Clactalent, Weal from waste etc. were conducted which were very useful to develop and expose e talents. Weal from waste competition gave em an opportunity to exhibit eir innovative and creative skills. Participants were distributed prizes and certificates. ICI Update - November

16 News from ICI Students Chapters Contd.. 4. Interdepartmental meet : An Intradepartmental meet was conducted on 19 September 2014 at Nandha College of Technology Campus. Many events, including e Paper presentation, poster presentation, Clactalent and weal from waste were conducted. The winners for e Paper Presentation were V.Srinivasan and K.Gandhi. G.Kalaivani and S.K.Keerana won e Award for Poster Presentation. The winners for e Clactalent were E.Periyannan, M.Uayakumar and K.Gandhi. S.R.Kavin, K.K.Arunkumar, E.S.Pradeep and K.Prasan won e Award for Weal from Waste competition.
