5 DAY 5~TUESDAY~MARCH 21 HABARANA/MATALE/KANDY Today, motor your way to Kandy (approximately 2-3 hours), stopping in Matale to experience the spices. Spices used to be an important trading commodity during the era of Kings in Sri Lanka who retained sole trading rights and exchanged spices for jewelry and silk with Arab traders sailing the Spice Route. After a sumptuous Sri Lankan lunch drive towards Kandy where you stay for the night. Kandy was the last kingdom of Ceylon till 1815 when it ceded to the British Empire. The name Kandy conjures visions of splendor and magnificence. Many of the legends, traditions and folklore are still lovingly kept alive. Two highlights in Kandy are the Dalada Maligawa (temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic of the Buddha) and the Royal Botanical Gardens (formerly the pleasure garden of Kandyan Kings). It was originally founded in 1472 after the collapse of the Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa kingdoms. When European invaders took control of the coastal regions from the 16th century, Sinhala Kings strategically retreated into the mountains and established Kandy as their Kingdom, from where they successfully repulsed invasions for 400 years helped by the natural formation of the ring of mountains in the center of the island. This evening take in a Kandyan dance performance featuring traditional Sri Lankan dancing. Tonight you will stay at the Earl s Regency Hotel, one of the finest hotels in Kandy. Perfectly located amidst the central hills of Kandy, this hotel is the perfect place to enjoy a memorable and luxurious stay. This journey is considered one of the most scenic railway journeys through the highlands of Sri Lanka, passing through lush green estates, mist-covered mountains and scenic waterfalls. While on board, a picnic lunch will be served. Nuwara Eliya was discovered and founded by the famed British Explorer Sir Samuel Baker in Situated at an altitude of 6,128 feet, its climate is considered most important for tea production and hence it is the heart of Ceylon Tea Land. The town is overlooked by the tallest mountains in Sri Lanka, and the similarity of the salubrious climate to a summer in the English countryside made it the prime sanctuary of British civil servants who named it Little England. Legend has it Sir Samuel Baker brought farm animals and hounds and set up English styled farms in the area. The city has many buildings retaining features of the colonial period with English style lawns and flower gardens as well as a picturesque lake and golf course. Arrive in Nuwara Eliya by afternoon and proceed to your home for the next two nights, the Grand Hotel, the former mansion of Sir Edward Barnes, the Governor of Sri Lanka during Designed with luxury and ancient royalty style, this hotel offers a range of facilities to make your stay in the hill as pleasant as possible. The landscape is varied, with rock outcrops, scrub jungle, lagoons, lakes, rivers and even beaches. Yala has the highest density of wild leopards in the world, herds of Sri Lankan elephant, and for bird enthusiasts, here are the few remaining breeding pairs of the Blacknecked Stork in Sri Lanka. This is one of the few places in Sri Lanka where it is relatively easy to see a leopard, either strolling beside the track or, with luck, draped elegantly in a tree. There are estimated to be around 35 leopards and 400 wild elephants, as well as wild buffalo, musk deer, mongoose, pangolin, black bear, macaque, jackal and numerous species of birds. Yala is the second largest national park in Southern Sri Lanka that facilitates one of the richest ecosystems in the Island. Next day, awake early and head off by 4x4 Jeep on safari at Yala National Park. Perhaps you will spy a leopard peering from behind a bush, or from a tree branch. After an afternoon respite, trek again into the woodlands for an opportunity to observe the comings and goings of the Sri Lankan elephant, the largest of the Asian elephant subspecies.

8 The Cinnamon Wild, your home for the next two nights, is a rustic resort, located on the border of Yala National Park, and the home to a tribe of resident grey lemurs who might think it s fun to jump on your roof in the early morning. Renovated in 2011, this hotel features interiors by local artist Meena de Silva, housing 68 chalets and 8 beach chalets, each sitting in the heart of the wilderness with interiors that won t let you leave. There are also four different restaurants on site offering delicious cuisine and nature feel environments. Overnights at the CINNAMON WILD in jungle chalets. Fishermen are carefully balanced on thin stilts. You will be amazed to see the way fishing is done around here. In the evening, luxuriate in a hammock to the sound of crashing waves. Next day, you will be picked up early and transferred to Mirissa for a whale watching excursion. Located within the International Whaling Commission s protected zone in the Indian Ocean, the south coast of Sri Lanka offers excellent chances to observe cetaceans such as blue and sperm whales. Located in the Northwest coast lowland dry zone of Sri Lanka, Wilpattu is the largest national park in Sri Lanka. It is home to many diverse forest types. Apart from leopard and sloth bear, there are also Sri Lankan elephant and spotted deer. Wetland bird species such as the Pin tail, Whistling Teal Spoonbill, and the White Ibis can also be found in the Wilpattu. Wilpattu retains its status as a preferred safari destination due to a strong prevalence of the elusive leopard. It is also a place full of character, where its people have long spent their days luxuriating in the very essence of idyllic living. While it is the perfect place to sit on a beach and watch a sunset with cocktail in hand, it is also a geographical marvel, knowing that there is thousands of fish swimming around the vivid corals just a few feet away from where you sit. The Maldives lies in two rows of atolls in the Indian Ocean, just across the equator. The country is made up of 1,190 coral islands formed around 26 natural ring-like atolls, spread over 35,000 square miles. These atolls structures are formed upon a sharp ridge rising from the ocean, making way for their secluded uniqueness. Each atoll in the Maldives is made of a coral reef encircling a lagoon, with deep channels dividing the reef ring. A string of islands take their places among this atoll ring; each island has its own reef encircling the island lagoon. The reefs of the islands, alive with countless types of underwater creatures and vibrant corals, protect the islands from wind and wave action of the surrounding vast oceans. This unique structure of reefs and channels makes navigation almost impossible for the passer-by without sufficient information about these waters. Ninety-nine percent of the Maldives is made up of sea. The people of the islands are widely dispersed across the atolls, with about 200 inhabited islands. About 90 islands are developed as tourist resorts and the rest are uninhabited or used for agriculture and other livelihood purposes. Your home for the next three nights is the Adaaran Club Rannalhi, one of the best hotels in Maldives due to its exclusive location at the tip of the South Male atoll within the exotic collection of islands known as the Maldives. 15 THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT SRI LANKA Participants: Must be able to climb in and out of safari 4x4 vehicles unassisted. They should also be able to tolerate riding on uneven, bumpy dirt roads for long periods of time, as well as some off-road experiences when opportunities allow. Participants should be able to stand and/or walk moderate distances at an easy pace for up to a few hours at a time when visiting villages, towns or other sites. Some, if not most, of this walking may be on uneven ground or uphill. There are also monuments that may have many steps and require climbing. Driving in Sri Lanka can be chaotic at times and unlike the orderly driving experienced in the United States. Your drivers are experts in navigating the roads with all the conditions that are prevalent and travelers should feel safe in the knowledge that your driver s number one priority is to get you to your destination safely and as efficiently as possible. General: True adventure in travel can sometimes be accompanied by unexpected changes in conditions, itineraries and occasionally your accommodations. Participants should travel with a spirit of adventure and flexibility. Remember to pack your patience and sense of humor! Be willing to look past self-imposed ideals of Western amenities and do not compare these new experiences with your life back home. Travel often includes visiting destinations with modest infrastructures and a bending definition of comfort. That being said some locations are nestled in absolute luxury where pampering is the norm. Participants should generally be in good health and prepared to travel in locations without medical facilities. Air Schedules Choosing the best possible air arrangements for our travelers is always a challenge. We work with many airlines that offer the best level of service, routings and value for our programs. While there may indeed be more direct routings available with another airline, the cost of these flights may not be within the budget that allows us to give you the best value possible. If you prefer to purchase your own international air, please feel free to choose the land only rate for this program. The start and end city for this program is Colombo, Sri Lanka. Upon registration, you must provide your full legal name as it appears on your passport. In the event an airline ticket is issued with incorrect information you have provided, you will be responsible for charges associated with reissuing the ticket.

INOCULATIONS: When it comes to vaccination and disease prevention, we suggest that travelers first review information provided by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention ( and then review those details with their personal physicians. WATER: It is always advisable to drink bottled and/or filtered water when traveling overseas. Safe drinking water will be provided to travelers free of charge in the vehicles and during meals. BAGGAGE: On average, international flights from the USA allow two pieces of checked luggage, each not exceeding 50 pounds; however we always recommend that you check your airline s policy just before departure, as luggage limitations are always subject to change. Despite this weight allowance, we always suggest guests travel light. Also soft-sided duffel bags are ideal for this tour, as they stow best in vehicles and airplanes with limited space.
