The Andmn & Nicobr re group of 572 islnds (of these, only 37 re permnently inhbited), islets, reefs nd islet rocks in the By of Bengl covering geogrphicl re of 8249 squre kms. These islnds re seprted by vst stretch of se from the minlnd nd lso seprted by se from ech other nd scttered over length of bout 700 kms. Port Blir town is the trnsporttion hub to which men nd mterils re trnsported from the minlnd nd crried further to the smller towns/settlements of Andmn & Nicobr Islnds. Port Blir is locted 1255 kms. from Kolkt, 1200 kms. from Viskhptnm nd 1190 kms. from Chenni. According to Andmn & Nicobr Administrtion, Port Blir, the cpitl of the Union Territory, is the only town in the islnds with n re of sq. km. nd the lnguges spoken is Hindi, Tmil & English. ABOUT THE DISTRICT POPULATION, ECONOMY, INDUSTRY & TOURISM POTENTIAL: POPULATION: The Popultion of Port Blir s per 2011 census is 2,38,142. ECONOMY: Agriculture, Industries nd Service sectors re the mjor sectors contributing to the Gross Stte Domestic Product. The Primry sector of the economy is the sector mking direct use of nturl resources. This includes griculture, forestry, fishing nd mining. In contrst, the secondry sector produces mnufctured goods, nd the tertiry sector provides services minly tourism. The tertiry sector contributed to nerly 61% of totl net stte domestic product in nd wheres the secondry sector contributed by nd primry sector by 9.6%. INDUSTRY: The principl ctivities t the Andmn islnds re dministrtion, griculture fishing nd tourism. Andmn due its long good costl line, undulting terrin covered with tropicl forests nd culturl / heritge sites ttrcts domestic nd interntionl tourists. There is little industril ctivity in the Union Territory. The recent yers hve, in fct, seen decline in industril output owing to closure of wood bsed industril units. There is no lrge scle industry in Andmn & Nicobr Islnds. As on mrch 2014, there ws only 2321 smll scle nd villge industril units with 6 Industril centres nd 8 Industril esttes. TOURISM POTENTIAL: The Andmn & Nicobr Islnds with its exotic flor nd fun hs immense scope for tourism nd hs been recognised s n eco-friendly tourist s destintion.
