3 ABOUT THE CITY AND AIRPORT CONNECTIVITY NAME OF THE AIRPORT (STATE) : KATIHAR AIRSTRIP, DIST. KATIHAR, BIHAR STATE (A) ABOUT THE CITY : Katihar is a city situated in the eastern part of the state of Bihar in India. It is the regional headquarter of Katihar district. It is one of the larger cities of Bihar and is known all over East India for its highly strategic railway junction. The city of Katihar is one of the most well maintained cities in Bihar with the city well lighted up throughout the night. There are LED lampposts fixed to a stretch of up to 5-6 kilometers through the middle of two-lane road leading to Katihar Junction & further up to Binodpur area via a roadway bridge. There are also 2-3 walkover bridges to facilitate localities because the entire city is traversed through a wide space occupied by a network of railway tracks. (I) INTRODUCTION : Katihar district is situated in the plains of North Eastern part of Bihar State, surrounded by Purnea district (Bihar) in the north and the west, Bhagalpur district (Bihar) and Sahebganj district (Jharkhand) in the south and Malda district and Uttar Dinajpur district (Paschim Bengal) in the east. ABOUT KATIHAR AIRSTRIP : Our team established the contact with Katihar Didt. Authorities on and interacted with following officers:- 1. Magisterate, Katihar, Mob: Mr. Krishna Kumar Singh, Mob: Mr. Ranjan Upadhay, Mob: Mr. Amin Abdul Nadaf, Mob: The circle officer and his team came to circuit house to help our team to find out the particular place where the airstrip was located. At the site, they were explained that a piece of land was earmarked by the state govt. long-time back as an airport land. But this earmarked airport site (17 acres approx) has been encroached by the villagers over a period of time. Now this encroached land has been taken back by the State Govt and action is in hand to secure this land by constructing a boundary wall around it. A certificate to this effect saying that 17 acres of land was earmarked as an Airport Land long time ago in Mauja Durgapore, Thana No-104, Ward No-10 by Officer-in-charge Anchal Office, Katihar. Presently there is no airstrip available and this land is lying vacant. (Certificate Attached) 1

4 (II) ABOUT THE DISTRICT POPULATION, ECONOMY, INDUSTRY & TOURISM POTENTIAL : POPULATION : As per 2011 Census, the population of Katihar Dist was 30,68,149. ECONOMY & INDUSTRY : The major source of living is agriculture. There are few industries in near by the place : two jute mills and two flour mills. The jute mills known as Purana Mill and Naya Mill once shaped the characteristics of the town. There are units which are producing agricultural products in Tingachhiya. The rice industry is a flourishing business in this area. The industry here, is mainly agro based. Banana, Jute, Maize are the main cash crop of the farmers of the Katihar district. One of the agro-based industry to join the group is Makhana. The Makhana Phodi (the place where edible makhana is produced from raw makhana) is growing fast. The cloth market here dealing in cotton and sarees is very vibrant and caters to nearby districts and the bordering countries of Nepal and Bangladesh. There are also a couple of old cycle trading companies with huge turnover. Pharmaceuticals business is also pretty good with huge turnover. The main crops are Paddy, Jute, Makhana, Banana, Wheat, Maize and Pulses. TOURISM POTENTIALS : Katihar an emerging city in the northeastern part of the State of Bihar is the headquarters of the District of Katihar. This particular city being situated in the plains of the North Eastern part of the State of Bihar and is surrounded by the district of Purnia, Sahebganj West Bhagalpur and West Bengal. This city was previously one of the divisions of the old district of Purnia. Later it was divided as a separate district in the year Katihar ( is famous for the Railway Junction situated here which consists of seven Railway lines or routes. Earlier, the city was once famous for its Jute Mills. 2
