3 ABOUT THE CITY AND AIRPORT CONNECTIVITY NAME OF THE AIRPORT (STATE) : MOTIHARI AIRSTRIP, DIST. EAST CHAMPARAN BIHAR STATE (A) ABOUT THE CITY : Motihari is the headquarters of East Champaran District and one of the important towns of Bihar State. East Champaran is an administrative district in the state with district headquarters located at Motihari. (I) INTRODUCTION : Our team established contact with East Champaran District administration before visiting the site and interacted with the following officials on 27 th October, Dist. Magistrate, E. Champaran, Mob: Circle Officer, Motihari: Mr. Vasant Kumar Choudhary, Mob: ABOUT THE AIRFIELD : The site is easily approached by National Highway (NH28A), on the same diversion as for the town. There are two approaches, one lying close to the highway (500m) via a narrow kutcha road, and the other lying close to the town centre (1km) a tarmac road through a residential area. The approach road from the town is a tarmac road of 5m wide, presently in poor shape. The elevation of the site is 49m. The land is owned by the Bihar State Government. There is no building and no structures of any kind. There is only a kutcha ground (28.38 acres) with a marked helipad where helicopters land. There is no airstrip available at the given site of coordinates. Helipad: N E A certificate has been obtained from the Circle Officer stating that there is no runway at the site. Only unpaved helipad is available (Certificate Attached). (I) ABOUT THE DISTRICT POPULATION, ECONOMY, INDUSTRY & TOURISM POTENTIAL : POPULATION : According to the 2011 census East Champaran district has a population of 50,82,868. 1

4 ECONOMY : Agriculture is the main source of income of the people in East Champaran. Rice, paddy, sugar cane, Jute and lentils are the major crops of the district. There are some small scale industries like pearl button industry, fishery development which are popular in East Champaran. INDUSTRY : East Champaran has a strong agricultural background. The pearl button Industry at Mehsi, only one of its kind in the whole of the country which had earned fame in the world. East Champaran has a large potential for fishery development. It has a large number of tanks and lakes. An ambitious plan for fish development started in 1995 by the Central Government. The World Bank financed Rs. 19 cr for fisheries development schemes in Motijheel and Kararia Jheel in Motihari town and its adjoining area to make the lakes suitable for fish production. Agro-based industries are prevalent in West Champaran Wood and wooden based industries. Repairing and service metal based industry, rubber, plastic and petro based engineering units, electrical machinery and transport equipment are also contributing factors in enhancing industry base in Champaran Dist. TOURISM : Champaran poses as a great place for tourists. The major places of tourist interest in East Champaran comprise of Mehsi, Phenhara, Raxaul, Adapur and Lauria. The district gives its visitors a complete package. From history to scenic beauty, there is something for everyone who comes visiting East Champaran. The Baikunthnath temple is a very important temple in the east Champaran district, situated in Baikuntha dham. The temple has a single idle of Shiva, Parvati and Ganesh. The mazaar of Hazrat Maulana Mohammad Abdul Aziz is yet another tourist attraction that is worth visiting. East Champaran, an administrative district of Bihar, is blessed with lush green surroundings and myriad tourist attractions. The district is significant in terms of mythology as well as history. 2
