2 ABOUT THE CITY: ABOUT THE CITY AND AIRPORT CONNECTIVITY NAME OF THE AIRPORT (STATE) : IGI AIRPORT (DELHI) (I) INTRODUCTION: Palam is a major suburb and residential colony in South West Delhi. The Indira Gandhi International Airport, formerly known as Palam Airport, the main airport of National Capital Region is situated here. It is one of 70 Vidhan Sabha constituencies of the Delhi National Capital Territory in northern India. It is one of the largest metropolises in the country. Delhi shares its borders with the states of Uttar Pradesh and Haryana. It is the centre of international politics, trade, culture and literature in India. Delhi has been continuously inhabited since the 6th century. Through most of its history, Delhi has served as a capital of various kingdoms and empires. It has been captured, ransacked and rebuilt several times, particularly during the medieval period, and modern Delhi is a cluster of a number of cities spread across the metropolitan region. A union territory, the political administration of the NCT of Delhi today more closely resembles that of a state of India, with its own legislature, high court and an executive council of ministers headed by a Chief Minister. New Delhi is jointly administered by the federal government of India and the local government of Delhi, and is the capital of the NCT of Delhi. Delhi hosted the first and ninth Asian Games in 1951 and 1982 respectively, (II) ABOUT THE DISTRICT POPULATION, ECONOMY, INDUSTRY & TOURISM POTENTIAL: POPULATION: As per 2011 census report the population of South West Delhi was 22,92,363. ECONOMY: Delhi is one of the fastest growing states of the country. The per capita income of Delhi was Rs 2,30,000, second highest in India after Goa. Delhi has an attractive real estate market and is a preferred tourist destination. The Government of Delhi has been committed towards creating a progressive business environment. The new Industrial Policy aims to provide a conducive environment for knowledge based and hi-tech IT/ITES in Delhi. According to the Department of Industrial Policy & Promotion (DIPP), FDI inflows in Delhi, including part of Uttar Pradesh and Haryana, stood at US$ billion from April 2000 to March Connaught Place, one of North India's largest commercial and financial centres, is located in the northern part of New Delhi. Adjoining areas such as Barakhamba Road, ITO are also major commercial centres. Government and quasi government sector was the primary employer in New Delhi. The city's service sector has expanded due in part to the large skilled English speaking workforce that has attracted many multinational companies. Key service industries include information technology, telecommunications, hotels, banking, media and tourism. The 2011 World Wealth Report ranks economic activity in New Delhi at 39, but overall the capital is ranked at 37, above the cities like Jakarta and Johannesburg. New Delhi with Beijing shares the top position as the most targeted emerging markets retail destination among Asia-Pacific markets. 1
3 INDUSTRY: Delhi is a major commercial center of Asia. An important economic zone in India, it is home to a wide range of industries. The industries in Delhi play a significant role in the economy of the country. Delhi, also known as Dilli, is the main administrative and political center of India. It is also one of the major industrial hubs of the country. Increased commercial and industrial activity in this city is responsible in a big way for the economic and industrial growth of India. The manufacturing sector in Delhi has grown vastly in recent years. The last two decades have seen the setting up of many manufacturing units of consumer goods in and around Delhi. The key manufacturing sectors in Delhi are Electrical and Electronics sector, Home Consumable industries sector, Gems and Jewelry, Home Textiles, Leather industries, Metals and Minerals, Plant and Machinery, and Pharmaceutical sector The service sector in Delhi is a vast one. It include: - Information technology, Banking, Media, Telecommunications, Hotels, Tourism. The Delhi State Industrial Development Corporation (DSIDC) has played a vital role in shaping the Industrial growth of Delhi. The DSIDC has built 944 industrial sheds on 8 industrial complexes. Most of them are in Okhla. The notable of them are: Kirtinagar Industrial Area Mangolpuri Industrial Area Naraina Industrial Area Okhala Industrial Area TOURISM POTENTIAL: Owing to its location, connectivity and rich cultural history, Delhi has always been a prime tourist attraction of the country. The following are the main tourist attraction in Delhi Sansad Bhavan or the Parliament of India is a circular building designed by the British architects Sir Edwin Lutyens and Sir Herbert Baker in Construction began in 1921, and in 1927 the building was opened as the home of the Council of State, the Central Legislative Assembly, and the Chamber of Princes. Rashtrapati Bhavan Built with a mix of European and Mughal/Indian styles was originally built for the Governor General of India. Inaugurated in 1931 as the Vice regal Lodge, the name was changed in 1959 after India became a republic. Now it is the Presidential Palace of India. Connaught Place is a business and commercial centre with hotels, shopping complexes, and offices. Tourist attractions include Hanuman Mandir, an ancient temple with a mention in Guinness Book of World Record, Jantar Mantar, an astronomical observatory from the 18th century, Maharaja Agrasen ki Baoli and State Emporiums which houses a collection of ethnic specialties of the states. Lodhi Gardens once called Lady Willingdon Park, it might have been laid out in 1930 and this beautiful park might contains 15 th and 16 th century monuments that are scattered among its well- 2
4 kept lawns, flowers, shady trees and ponds. During the early morning and evening hours, the sprawling garden is a favorite spot for fitness freaks and those in search of solitude. Chandni Chowk is a main marketplace in Delhi, keeps alive the city's living legacy of Shahjahanabad. Created by Shah Jahan the builder of Taj Mahal the old city, with the Red Fort as its focal point and Jama Masjid as the praying centre, has a fascinating market called Chandni Chowk. Qutub Minar is located in Qutb complex, Mehrauli in South Delhi. It was built by Qutub uddin Aibak of the Slave Dynasty, who took possession of Delhi in It is a fluted red sandstone tower, which tapers up to a height of 72.5 meters and is covered with intricate carvings and verses from the Quran. Gurudwara Bangla Sahib One of the most prominent and largest Gurdwaras in Delhi, Gurdwara Bangla Sahib is the most visited one in the Delhi. Millions visit this Gurdwara from all over the world and of all religions to offer their prayers at this elegant yet historical Gurdwara in Delhi. Lotus Temple is an exceptionally beautiful structure, created by the Bahá'í House of Worship, situated in South Delhi and looks like a white lotus. It was built by the Bahá'í community. Chhatarpur Temple is located at Chhatarpur, is the second largest temple complex in India, and is dedicated to Goddess, Katyayani National Museum, New Delhi is one of the largest museums in India. It holds variety of articles ranging from pre-historic era to modern works of art. It is run by the Ministry of Culture, part of the Government of India. The museum is situated on the corner of Janpath and Maulana Azad Road. Jantar Mantar consists of 13 architectural astronomy instruments, built by Maharaja Jai Singh II. On the banks of the Yamuna River, which flows past Delhi there is Raj Ghat the final resting place of Mahatma Gandhi the father of the nation. It has become an essential point of call for all visiting dignitaries. Two museums dedicated to Gandhi are situated nearby. India Gate built in 1931 was inspired by the Arc de Triomphe in Paris. It is the national monument of India commemorating the 90,000 soldiers of the Indian Army who lost their lives while fighting for the British Raj in World War I and the Third Anglo-Afghan War. The monument is barricaded now with entry to inside arch restricted. 3
