DTW Chief Pilot Office Newsletter In this issue March 2017 Meet Our Newest Chief Pilot Please Welcome Jim Breaugh Back to the Line Tower Tuesdays Town Hall Tuesdays Reminder Update Beneficiary Information Keep Our Spaces Safe New DTW Line Safety Coordinator Safety Update Check your Six AED Locations Lost and Found Delta Care Fund Thanks Annual Mammogram March Retirements Contact Information Meet Our Newest Chief Pilot I am very excited to start my tenure in the DTW Chief Pilot Office; a new, and challenging opportunity to serve my fellow pilots. I began my career at the airline in 1996, and have flown on the 727, A320, DC9, MD88, and currently on the 717. I served as a Line Check Pilot on the DC9 and 717, and most recently as a Lead on the 717 here in DTW. I live locally in Howell, MI and I am blessed with a wife of 18 years and three children ages 10, 13, and 15. I m discovering now with my oldest daughter that it is tougher to check her out in the family car than it ever was checking out new captains in the 717! Please stop in and say hi, and I am at your service to help with any questions or concerns you may have. Captain Mike Perrin Chief Pilot DTW, 717A Please Welcome Jim Breaugh Back to the Line: Captain Jim Breaugh is returning to the line as a 7ER captain. We would like to thank him for all his hard work, leadership, dedication and support to the pilot group over the last three years. 1
Tower Tuesday Join us for lunch on March 7 for our Tuesdays with the Tower. Staff from the FAA tower will be in the lounge from to answer any questions you may have. They are a friendly bunch, so stop by to say hello and introduce yourself. Town Hall Tuesday On March 21 we will have our monthly luncheon in the lounge where we invite the, Delta Pilot Mutual Aid to come and speak with everyone. Reminder: As a reminder from Detroit Station Operations please do not throw the flight deck trash bag out on the jet way. These bags do not get picked up by the aircraft cleaners and they become an eyesore for our passengers and fellow employees. Thanks for your cooperation. Update your Beneficiary Information: If you have yet to update your beneficiary information please follow this link and do so. Information.aspx. Follow the instructions provided. Keep Our Spaces Safe: Safety is our number one priority at Delta Air Lines. Please be aware of your surroundings, we work very hard to keep our facility hazard free. If you happen to notice anything hazardous such as a ceiling light hanging down, spills in the bathroom, toilets over flowing, or sinks leaking please call the Chief Pilot Office at so we can take care of it ASAP! New DTW Line Safety Coordinator: The DTW CPO and Delta Flight Safety are pleased to announce that Capt. Tom Starkey has been selected to be one of the Line Safety Coordinators (LSC) here in DTW. Tom will join current LSC F/O Bob Hartman in working on safety related issues here in DTW and around the Delta system. Please join us in welcoming Tom to his new role and feel free to contact him should you have any safety related questions or concerns. Tom can be reached at: Capt. Tom Starkey (320 LCA) Thomas.Starkey@Delta.com
March 2017 Safety update: The Delta Air Lines Line Safety Coordinator (LSC) program is comprised of line pilot representatives that act as safety liaisons. There are 12 LSC s stationed throughout the system at each of the pilot bases. LSC s perform safety duties for Delta Flight Safety, while addressing safety concerns for their respective CPO. Your DTW LSC s are Captain Tom Starkey and First Officer Bob Hartman. We perform many duties within this role that are not always visible to the pilot group, however our overall goal is to assist in making the operation safer. Our intention is to post articles in this DTW Monthly Newsletter showing trends and giving data points about our DTW operation. Your input is needed to assist us with our mission. Your feedback and your reports (ASAP, ASR, FCR) provide us with the subject matter that we look in to. We have additional venues for obtaining information, however we still need input from the pilots to be able to address your thoughts and concerns. So how does Delta Air Lines Flight Safety help you on a daily basis? There is a dedicated staff working hard on your behalf every day. While you may never encounter or correspond with this group, rest assured they are devoted to the safety of the operation. What can the average line pilot do within the Safety Environment to promote a safe operation? Stay informed! Surprisingly, the readership level is low within the Flight Safety section of the Surface tablet. Take a look in the Content Locker, under Flight Ops. Comm. And Newsletters, and then go to Flight Safety Information. There you can read the Flight Safety Flyer, Flight Safety Trend reports, and Event Summaries. This material has been added so that you can read about safety related issues and possibly learn from others. Your LSC s look forward to providing you with more information during the months ahead, but as always, your main contact for issues or concerns is the CPO. We as LSC s are another resource available to try to help you. Fly Safe, Captain Tom Starkey First Officer Bob Hartman 3
Check Your Six: There are a few areas of our local ramp that require special attention due to the close proximity of airport roadways, buildings and other structures. Notice this caution on the KDTW page 10-7: Northeast and Southeast Corridors CAUTION Use minimum breakaway thrust from Gates 27, 29, 31, 33, 35, 45, 47, 49 and 51 Due to close proximity of the AOA fence. This is the area near the Westin Hotel and the parking structure. When pushed from these gates our jet blast can affect the airport arrival roadway and pose a hazard to autos, airport equipment, and pedestrians. To help mitigate this threat please follow the guidance in your fleet s FCTM, Ground Operations section. Here is an excerpt from the FCTM: Thrust use during ground operation demands sound judgment and technique. Even at relatively low thrust the air blast effects from the large, high bypass engines can be destructive and cause injury. Aircraft response to throttle movement is slow, particularly at high gross weights. Engine noise level in the flight deck is low and not indicative of thrust output. In some cases simply releasing the brakes is sufficient to begin moving, while other conditions will require greater thrust. Allow time for engine spool-up and aircraft movement before increasing thrust further. If more than breakaway thrust is necessary, ensure area behind aircraft is clear or consider starting the other engine. Thank you for your continued professionalism and efforts to keep our ramp areas safe. 4
AED locations: An automated external defibrillator (AED) is a portable electronic device that automatically diagnoses the life-threatening cardiac arrhythmias of ventricular fibrillation and ventricular tachycardia in a patient,[1] and is able to treat them through defibrillation, the application of electrical therapy which stops the arrhythmia, allowing the heart to reestablish an effective rhythm. 6 Lost and Found: If you have lost a headset recently, or even awhile ago, it may have made its way down into the DTW Chief Pilot Office. Please come on down and have yourself a look around our lost and found bin. If you have lost a pair of perscription glasses or sun glasses recently, or even in the last few months, they may be waiting in the DTW Chief Pilot Office. Please come on in and have yourself a look around in our lost and found bin. If you have lost anything else, please feel free to come down ask about it. Delta Care and Scholarship Fund Annual Giving Campaign THANK YOU! On behalf on myself and the entire office, we d like to thank you for your generous donations last year. The Detroit Flight Ops family raised over $52,000 in new annual donations for the Delta Care, Scholarship and Retirement funds. These funds have provide support for your fellow pilots and other employees throughout the Delta Worldwide system. Whether taking care of our customers or each other, Delta people specialize in supporting others. It's the Delta difference. February kicks off the month dedicated to the Annual Giving Campaign to promote the Delta Care and Scholarship Funds. Helping fellow employees when facing a sudden, unexpected personal crisis or providing scholarships to help somebody else realize their dream of a college degree, are some of the ways Delta people are reaching out to make a difference. Last year through the generous donations of the Detroit pilots, Detroit was #1 throughout Flight Operations fundraising. We d like to maintain our #1 spot and ask that you consider in increasing your donation or if you haven t given in the past choosing to do so this month. We will have information in the crew lounge throughout the month as well as additional fundraising events. Currently 30% of all Flight Operations employees give to these funds, our goal is to increase that to 35% this year. We have been making great strides the last few years and hope to keep those numbers climbing!
