1 CR Smith Museum Treasure Hunt K-3 Soaring Through Science Education Department The Treasure Hunt was developed for Group Leaders interested in facilitating the learning of Young Scholars in Grades K 3. Questions were designed to help Facilitators navigate their Groups through the Museum while also imparting knowledge about the C.R. Smith Museum s Treasures and achieving the Academic Objectives listed below. ACADEMIC OBJECTIVES: Language Development: Listening, Understanding, Speaking, Communicating Cognitive Development: Logical Thinking, Problem Solving, Recognizing Diversity Approaches to Learning: Curiosity/Persistence, Invention/Imagination, Reasoning/Reflecting Social/Emotional Development: Self-Expression/Self-Control, Self-Concept, Social Interaction Curriculum: Science, Reading, Language Arts, Math, Art, Health/Safety, Social Studies, Technology RECOMMENDATIONS: Ratios should consist of 5-10 Young Scholars per 1 Adult Facilitator. Please print and bring enough Treasure Hunts for all Group Leaders. Note: Answers to Treasure Hunt questions appear directly after each question. 2 Section A Flight Lab This area will begin with our LIFT WIND TUNNEL and end with our DFW AIRPORT MODEL. This section has many interactive exhibits that address different subjects including aerodynamics, forces on an airplane, jet engines, navigating the globe, historic and current aircraft and work at an airport. Duration: minutes Questions: 16 LIFT WIND TUNNEL: FIND the LIFT Wind Tunnel that has two wings inside. This wind tunnel will make a lot of noise when you push the BLACK BUTTON. 1. How many wings are in the wind tunnel? Answer: 2 2. What shapes are the two wings? Answer: There is a CURVED wing and a STRAIGHT wing 3. What happens when you push the black button and turn the black knob? Answer: 1 wing lifts, the other does not 4. Which wing LIFTS in the air? Answer: The CURVED WING lifts in the air Look at the DC-3 Plane or any plane model in the museum. Are the wings curved or straight? The curved part of the wing is called the AIRFOIL. The AIRFOIL helps LIFT the airplane in the air and keep the airplane in the air while it is flying. F-100 COCKPIT: The COCKPIT or FLIGHT DECK is where the pilots fly the plane. There are wide array of instruments, buttons and levers that the pilots use to help fly and control the plane. The Captain sits on the left side of the cockpit, and the First Officer sits on the right. 5. How many windows are in the F-100 Cockpit? Answer: 6 Page 2 8
3 FOUR FORCES MURAL: Find the airplane mural with the FOUR FORCES. (Located on the wall just behind the F-100 cockpit) A force is a strength or energy that pushes or pulls something 6. How many arrows are on the wall? Answer: 4 7. What direction or way are the arrows pointing? Answer: They are pointing UP, DOWN, LEFT and RIGHT 8. Can you name the 4 forces of flight? Answer: Lift, Drag, Weight and Thrust 9. What do the 4 forces do? Answer: Lift pushes you up, Drag pushes you back (slows you down), Weight pushes you down, Thrust pushes you forward (makes you go fast) NAVIGATION GLOBES: A globe is 3-D model of the world. These globes tell you the range or distance each listed airplane can fly. 10. How many globes are there? Answer: What shape are the globes? Answer: Circle or Sphere 12. How many different airplane names appear on the globes? (hint, look at both sides) Answer: From the planes listed, which can travel the farthest distance? (hint, the larger the number, the farther the range) Answer: MD-11 JET ENGINE MODEL: This is a model propeller engine used to demonstrate THRUST. Engines push an airplane forward in the air. 14. How many blades are on the propeller engine in the glass case? Answer: Push the black button, what way does the engine go? Answer: Forward/in a circle COLORING STATIONS: On this table you may use crayons to make different airplane type pictures. How many different pictures can you make by rubbing the crayon over the piece of paper? CREATE ONE! BOARDING GATE: Our Historic boarding gate features clothing, wands, ear phones and more. Students may dress up and imagine themselves working in different aviation jobs like pilots, ground crew, flight attendants. DFW AIRPORT MODEL: This is a model of the DFW Airport with different sections describing different jobs. Press the different buttons to see the areas light up and listen to the explanation. 16. What color is the light when you select a button? Answers: Green, White or Red Take the opportunity to explore additional exhibits in this area! Page 3 8
4 Section B DC-3 Flagship Knoxville Take your group on a tour of the outside of the plane and then board the plane to see the inside and cockpit. Duration: minutes Questions: 13 OUTSIDE DC-3 AREA: 1. How many wheels are on the DC-3 airplane? Answer: 2 wheels 2. How many passenger windows are on one side of the airplane? Answer: 7 3. What are the colors on the wings? Answer: Silver and Orange OUTSIDE DC-3 AREA (continued): Aircraft have 3 navigation lights on the plane that help other aircraft see them and determine their position and direction of flight. 5. What color is the light on the left wing tip (port side)? Answer: Red 6. What color is the light on the right wing tip (starboard side)? Answer: Green 7. What color is the strobe light on the tip of the tail (aft)? Answer: White 8. What side did passengers enter the airplane? Answer: Right side INSIDE DC-3: 9. How many passenger seats are on the plane? Answer: How many seats are in the cockpit? Answer: How many steering wheels (or yokes) are in the cockpit? Answer: What crew member do you think sits in the fold-up jump seat near the plane entrance? Answer: Flight Attendant INTERESTING CARGO: Find the Large Interesting Cargo hanging mural located between the steps and balcony overlooking the DC-3 Hangar 12. Do airplanes carry other things besides people? Answer: Yes 13. Find one thing in the mural or in the models that airplanes carry besides people. Answers: vary Animals, Mail, Pianos, Vehicles, Fruit Take the opportunity to explore additional exhibits in this area! Page 4 8
5 727 LANDING GEAR AND AIRPLANE MECHANIC (continued) Airplanes can do anywhere from landings and takeoffs before they need to replace their tires! 3. How many wheels are on the landing gear? Answer: 2 There are THREE Large engines in this area. Find the Piston Engine- Wright R3350 which is the only engine with large propeller blades. 4. What color(s) is this engine? Answer: silver and red 5. How many propeller blades does this engine have? Answer: 4 blades Find the JT-3D Engine that is the smaller jet engine Section C Maintaining the Fleet This section includes the Maintenance Checks, 727 Landing Gear and Airplane Mechanic model and our three large engines in the museum, Wright R3350 (piston engine), JT-3D (first jet engine) and the CF6-80C2 (more modern jet engine) Duration: minutes Questions: 8 1. There are three different kinds of maintenance checks. What are the letters of the Three Checks? Answer: A, B, C 727 LANDING GEAR AND AIRPLANE MECHANIC Find a Gray Mechanic with a flashlight 2. What is he working on? Answer: Landing Gear 6. What is different about this engine (JT-3D) than the engine you just saw (R3350)? Answer: No propeller blades 7. What color is this engine? Answer: Red Find our largest jet engine in the museum, the CF6-80C2. Press the black button to watch an inspection and see the inside of this engine. 8. What color is the tip of this engine? 6 Section D History Circle The History Circle is divided into a timeline starting with the beginning of American Airlines in 1934 and ending at present day on the inside of Circle Theater where you ll also discover our Legacy Kiosk and behind the scenes movies. Duration: minutes Questions: (BEGINNING OF AMERICAN AIRLINES): Find the model of a DC-3 airplane in the 1934 section of the history wall. 1. Is it bigger or smaller than our DC-3 airplane in the museum hangar? Answer: Smaller 2. Do they look the same? Answer: They look similar but are different colors Find the 1936 period. In 1936, American Airlines went to Lakehurst New Jersey to meet the Hidenburg. 3. What is the Hindenburg? Answer: A Blimp 4. How much was a ticket? Answer: $6 per person Before GPS and computers, pilots used maps, globes and devices to navigate airplanes. 5. What did you/the driver use to find your way to the CR Smith Museum? Answers: may vary but include, maps, GPS Find the Gibson Girl radio. This was used as an emergency device to send out SOS rescue signals for help. 6. What color is the Gibson Girl radio? Answer: Yellow : Find the KIWI BIRD in the exhibit. This was the mascot for the flight attendant group called the Kiwis. 7. Compared with most birds, what is the Kiwi bird missing? Answer: Wings 8. Can the Kiwi bird fly? Answer: No, it cannot fly 9. Do you know of any other birds that cannot fly? Answers: may vary but include: penguins, ostriches, emus Page 6 8
7 Find the Magnetronic Reservoir It is a black machine to the left of the Kiwi bird. This was the first reservation system for American Airlines. 10. How many red buttons are on the machine? Answer: : In the 1960s, airlines started providing more entertainment for passengers. 11. Can you find the section of small Astrovision Television? Answer: small TV is in the 1959 section 12. How many knobs are on the TV? Answer: : Find the cutout of the NASA What is on top of the plane? Answer: The NASA space shuttle is on top of the NASA 747 cutout Find the AirFone. 14. How many buttons are on the Airfone? Answer: 9 buttons Turn around, find the lounge piano encased in plexiglass. This Wurlitzer piano was used on 747 flights from What colors are the piano keys? Answer: Black and White 16. How many black keys are on the piano? Answer: PRESENT: Find the Medical Equipment displayed in the case. 17. What are some of the different medical items you see? Answers: vary- scissors, defibrillator (applies an electrical shock to help restore heart beat), Stethoscope (listen to heart & breathing), sphygmomanometer (measures blood pressure) CIRCLE THEATER: Watch one of the 8 behind the scenes videos in the circle theater and visit the Legacy Kiosk to learn about all the airlines that have combined to create American Airlines. 18. What is something new that you learned from one of the circle theater videos? Answers: vary de-icing, weather, airfare, new planes, baggage, new livery, new logo 19. Legacy Kiosk Touching the red flag nearest the year 2010 on the timeline, name the important event that took place in 2009? 8 Section E Entrance Exhibits Take time to watch a video about CR Smith, Review the Airplane Parts and Functions of the Boeing 787, take turns flying a simulator, explore the Bronze Eagle Statue at the entrance, along with the Stained Glass Window segments from JFK Airport. Why do you think the eagle s wings are down? Answers: vary - sadness, remembrance GLOBE: Find the big Globe 6. What color are the lights? Answer: White 7. What do you think the lights represent? Answer: airports, cities or destinations that American Airlines travels 8. What do you think the blue parts of the globe mean? Answer: Water 9. What do you think the silver parts of the globe mean? Answer: Land 10. What do you see more blue or silver? Answer: Blue 11. How many model planes are circling above the globe?
