3 News Around the Club HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY If we experience freezing temperature, don't forget to plan to arrive early for your flight instruction appointments or plane rental to allow de-icing time, if needed. MEETING ROOM RESERVATIONS Are you looking for meeting space for your own Meetup, business meeting, or party? Contact Customer Service at the Club to book your spot or connect you with the Dakota Cafe. IFR / IMC ROUND TABLE UPDATE Since March 2016, the IFR / IMC Round Table group has been working through simulator scenarios and accident reports together. The goals of the meetings are to have an open and relaxed forum to discuss and practice instrument flying and to have fun! If you would like to be on the mailing list or get involved in the group for their next meeting on February 23rd at 2pm, contact John at ainsworthj@airnavigation.com in advance INCOME TAX FORMS The 2018 Income Tax forms are available from the office or in the January Patrician. Please return your completed forms to the office ASAP. INDUSTRY: THE BEGINNING OF NEXT A milestone was reached on January 11th with the last launch of a Falcon 9 rocket with a payload of 10 Iridium satellites, completing a constellation of 75 satellites. This enables full global satellite-based communications which brings revolutionary changes to the aviation industry. A swath of new products and services will become available for the aviation industry. Aireon's space-based ADS-B, providing 100 percent global air traffic surveillance is now enabled. Aireon ALERT, a public service for locating and tracking ADS-B OUT 1090MHz equipped aircraft in emergency situations, is also now being offered to commercial aviation (through the Irish Aviation Authority). Although full testing of the complete Aireon payload is still in progress, the new Aireon system has already processed more than 13 billion ADS-B messages per month. Although these services aren't available for light aircraft in non-commercial aviation, those who take on careers as an airline pilot in time will be operating with reduced aircraft separation, reduced CO 2 emissions and increased safety due to the greater global aircraft visibilty. A new era is just ahead! VFC MENTOR PROGRAM The program continues! Would you like to meet other pilots to fly with, split the cost of flights, share knowledge on how to do things, get help getting into a new airport for the first time? VFC's mentors have their resumes posted on a special VFC Mentors bulletin board beside the Dispatch counter. 5 NEWS and EVENTS What?! Half a 172 per year? Although VFC s management team has negotiated our credit card fees down considerably over the last year, did you know that VFC pays the equivalent of a half of an airplane per year in credit card company fees? We d ask you to consider using cash, interact or e-transfer in paying your account to reduce unnecessary fees, yours and ours, because we d like to spend that money on adding another plane to the fleet. 5
6 Notice of the Annual General Meeting NEWS and EVENTS The Victoria Flying Club Annual General Meeting has been scheduled for Thursday, March 7th, 2019 in the VFC pilot lounge. The meeting will begin, as it always does, at 6:00 pm with wine and cheese. The business portion of the evening gets under way at 7:00 pm. What Happens at the AGM? As a not-for-profit organization in Canada, the Victoria Flying Club holds the Annual General Meeting to provide an opportunity for discussion and decision making among club members. The discussion will include a review of the previous year's results, plans for the current year, and the establishment of the Board of Directors for the upcoming year. The Board of Directors are selected by a process of election. Who is Eligible to Vote at the AGM? While attendance at the AGM is open to all members, voting privileges are extended to those with Sustaining Memberships and Life Memberships only. If you have been a member in good standing of the Victoria Flying Club for 24 consecutive months, then you are eligible to apply to become a Sustaining or Life Member. Sustaining Members and Life Members receive a discount on aircraft rentals, fuel, etc. If you have been a member for 24 consecutive months, please pick up a Sustaining Member or Life Member application from the VFC office and plan to attend the AGM. How Can You Get Involved? The Board of Directors consists of a group of Victoria Flying Club members who use their collective knowledge and skills to conduct club business on behalf of all members. They are governed by a set of by-laws and make decisions regarding aircraft and equipment, facilities, staffing, and various other areas of club business. Sustaining and Life Members are eligible to be nominated for a director position. Nomination forms are available at the VFC office and nominations. Directors must be nominated by two other Sustaining or Life Members. After completing your nomination form please send a short bio to the nomination committee via VFC President, Ramona Reynolds, at reynoldsworks@shaw.ca so that it can be published in advance of the AGM. Being involved with the VFC Board of Directors is a great opportunity to contribute to the future of the Victoria Flying Club, and to the local aviation community. Board Member Nominees Board positions are vacant. So far, members standing for election at our Annual General Meeting include: Adrian Sudbury Adrian joined Victoria Flying Club in 2015 when he decided to finally give in to his lifelong desire to fly. He also has aspirations to become a commercial pilot. Currently, he works for a large pension fund manager and previously held roles at the Canada Revenue Agency and the Royal Bank of Canada. Originally from Quebec, he spent most of his life until he graduated from Concordia University with an Economics degree. Afterwards, he moved to BC. Although he holds a day job, he is actively building up his hours and considering the cockpit as his next office. His favourite place to fly is Tsuniah Lake Lodge Airport where he spends a few days every summer. Jennifer Zadorozniak Jennifer Zadorozniak grew up in Surrey and moved to Victoria 13 years ago. She got into flying and started her flight training at the Victoria Flying Club in January of She has a PPL and is seaplane, mountain, and night rated. She is currently working on her commercial licence and hopes to have this finished in When she's not flying, she works full time for Island Health, now in her tenth year as a mental health therapist. She's ready for a new challenge and is working towards a career flying professionally. She's involved with Women in Aviation International, the BC Coast 99s, and COPA Flight 6. She also volunteers for the Victoria Hospitals Foundation and in the elementary school system. She's running for a Victoria Flying Club Board position because she wants to be more involved with the club while offering a female and student perspective. With the mantra From shop floor to top floor the Foundation employs a unique hands-on approach towards changing perceptions and addressing gender disparity in high tech fields. opportunities, it is unreasonable to expect them to be interested in pursuing STEM-based fields. We ve implemented Operation: This IS You! to develop this network of experience by providing year-round experience events for females in the applicable agency or industry partner s native environment. Applications can be found at their website: NEWS and EVENTS Since the number of women in Aviation, Aerospace, Marine & Defence as well as other STEMbased industries remains low, the result is that few females have other females in their network to share their experience and passion for these fields. In day to day life, women generally don t see themselves reflected in these areas, and this is continually reinforced in the media and social media. Says Achieve Anything president and founder Kirsten Brazier. Therefore, if women are not aware of these CPL GROUND SCHOOL CPL classes are on right now, but you can call Dispatch to get on the list for the next round! 7
8 Love Is in the Air! Feature Article Many a friendship or a long lasting love interest had its beginnings around the Victoria Flying Club. In 2018, we shared a few stories: Mike and Norma Sealey celebrated their 60th anniversary at the Cllub, and fittingly so! Norma and Mike met at the Club in 1957 when Norma was Mike's flying student. The next year, they got married. Mike remained a Manager at VFC until 1964 when he joined BC Government Air as a pilot. They both remained deeply involved in our local Sidney community over the years. Last November, we also shared the story of Justine and Jesse Seads who got engaged in October Jesse had arranged a flight in a VFC Club plane and proposed while flying over a carefully arranged pumpkin message. Images: Norma and Mike Sealey, from November 19, 2006 Times Colonist article, "Life's a wild garden." Right: Mike and Norma celebrate their 60th anniversary at the Club, August Many others have gotten engaged at the Club, such as Lee and Ria of Spartan Media Group. They used friend and fellow photographer extraordinaire Jesse Hlady ( com/) to do their engagement shoot at our Club. Lee said of the experience, "Travelling is a big part of our lives and this was just perfect! I guess it has been 6 years now, but we can't thank you guys enough for allowing us to have our shoot there." Got a story of a life-long relationship with beginnings at the Club? We'd love to hear it! Tell us at flyvfcmarketing@gmail.com. Image above: Justine Aichelberger and Jesse Seads got engaged after Justine saw this question at Gobind Farms. Jesse, with help from friends and family, had laid out the message with pumpkins and arranged the flight with the Victoria Flying Club in order to pop the question. 12 Plane Maintenance GOOD-BYE Rain Season! Feature Article Contributed by Leslie at Sea and Sky Eco Detailing With the winter rains comes excess moisture, mold, mildew, and rot. This atmosphere is wonderful for the vegetation, but not so good for your airplane. Year after year your plane must deal with spores reaching into cracks and seams. If we do not remove and clean it completely you will see the re-growth or worse, it can start to degrade the structure it is on. What to do and what to use? Lets begin with products. To rid your airplane of mold you will want to use something that will kill mold spores. Non-toxic cleaners like hydrogen peroxide, vinegar, and elbow grease will start you on a good path to eradicating those spores. Products similar to those we carry, (Wingman for the biological material on the exterior and Advantage for any biological staining for the interior) are great options. When looking at any cleaning products ensure you will not do any damage to your aircraft with their use and that they are not static creating. Mold and biological matter is best removed by irritating the spores, then penetrating them with a cleaning solution. Once this is completed, wipe, remove, and repeat the process using a clean cloth. As you might suspect some of the areas you will want to work on will be a challenge to get into. This is where you can encourage some creative thinking. I use items such as soft toothbrushes, Q-tips, toothpicks, paint brushes, soft plastic scrapers, bamboo skewers, microfibers, cotton cloths, or blue paper towels. As you proceed ensure you maintain clean tools. Cleaning away mold, mildew, and moisture should be done safely. Please ensure you remember some safety precautions. Safety precautions include ensuring there is appropriate ventilation, gloves (to protect your hands), safety glasses, and possibly a mask to protect your lungs from air born spores. Areas of focus on your plane will likely be the leading edges and nose, April 13-14, 2019 Abbotsford, BC 12 FEBRUARY 2019 VFC Aviation Excellence Since 1946
13 the wheel pods, belly and any edge that has the ability to hold moisture or water. The interior focus will be every seam, edge and any fabric that may have been exposed to moisture. Keep an eye on the flooring as well, under the seats and in the cockpit. To assist with reducing the moisture inside we suggest keeping a dehumidifier in the cabin while your plane is parked. courtesy of This is a time-intensive process, best to be thought of as meditative one, so when your into your 6th or 7th hour, don't feel frustrated! Once your plane is clean, consider adding a sealant to the exterior (wax, polymer or ceramic) and to the interior (fabric or leather) which will make it more difficult for spores to attach themselves again. Many thanks for sharing this angle involved with airplane ownership. Editor. 16 Flying with Kaiden Feature Article Contributed by Alli Roberts, Tour de Rock Rider I would like to introduce you to a quiet, funny, compassionate and brave soul who I m so honoured to have been partnered with for the Tour de Rock: my 11 year old Junior Rider, and cancer warrior Kaiden Finley. In May 2017, Kaiden found out he had a brain tumour and bravely endured a 12-hour surgery to remove the tumour followed by six weeks of high dose radiation. In May 2018, Kaiden joined Tour de Rock as a Junior Rider. In no time at all, Kaiden had won over not just my heart, but the hearts of the entire Tour de Rock team. When a routine 3-month MRI in September revealed six new tumours in his neck and spine, Kaiden s doctors confirmed that there were no treatment options available and Kaiden was considered palliative. Now as he and his family face this prognosis each day with unbelievable strength and love, Kaiden s story continues to reach further into the community and his team of supporters continues to grow. With time being limited, we have searched for experiences for Kaiden, wishes to be fulfilled, and dreams to be made into realities. The Victoria Flying Club helped do just that. On December 5, 2018, Kaiden was given the gift of flight. He was introduced to flying and had a chance to take two flights with his fabulous instructor Brenda McPhail. Kaiden s mom Tasha, brother Bailey, great-grandmother Sylvia, and I all had a chance to share the experience as passengers with Kaiden! I asked Kaiden what he would like to say about flying. First thing was THANK YOU. He had so much fun. His favourite part was probably turning the plane while flying but overall just flying the plane was the best. Seeing the smile on his face and the pride in his flight was a gift to all of us who love him. Thank you to the Victoria Flying Club for making this happen. The gift of these memories can never be repaid but will always be cherished. Kaiden continues to bravely battle cancer and face the new challenges each day presents. There are a number of ways you can support Kaiden. 1) kaidens-fight-against-cancer Kaiden s family has had to relocate to Victoria and his Mom is off work caring for Kaiden. 19 Fly-Out Bug COPA Flight 6 COPA FLIGHT 6 Flight Captain (President) Rob Shemilt Co-Captain (Vice President) Allan Rempel Navigator (Treasurer) Art Reitsma Would you like to volunteer as a board member? COPA Flight 6 would love to hear from you! The COPA Flight 6 January meeting was a presentation by four aircraft owners featuring four somewhat different airplanes. Thank you to Allan Rempel for bringing together these pilots and owners who spoke about their aircraft, the features of each, the things they didn't like, and why they bought their particular plane. If you've ever considered owning or even building an aircraft, this was a great opportunity to speak directly with these pilots and aircraft owners. COPA Flight 6, Vice-President Allan Rempel led the presentation discussing his 1964 Cessna 210D, CGZTR. Allan chose this plane for its versatility when lifting off from either pavement or grass, short or long runways. The plane cruises along at 145 KT and has a useful load of 1250 pounds. CGZTR is powered by a Continental I0-520 engine and stalls out at 37 KT. A few questions revolved around what Allan didn't like about his choice of aircraft. As Allan put it, "I like everything about my choice of aircraft as you can load it up with people and payload, and it just performs." Next up was Rob Prior who flies a 1996 RV-6, CFRBP or "Tweety" as he calls it. Rob started building his own aircraft, but soon realized this just wasn't going to be completed anytime soon, so he decided to buy an already built airplane. He started looking at RV-7s along with RV-4s, but settled on the RV-6, which he located in Idaho, USA. Rob grew up around aircraft and performing aerobatics and likes the RV-6 for it's "gentlemanly" aerobatic performance. Tweety is powered by a 150HP motor and the RV is often refered to as the closest thing to flying a Canadian Forces Tutor Jet, just a tad slower. In closing, Rob didn't want a certified aircraft as you don't have the same flexibilty in maintaining an amateur built airplane. Our third presenter was Tom Vesey who is part owner of a 1974 C-172 float plane, CGEVE. The plane sits on EDO 2000 floats and is powered by a 150 HP Lycoming. A disadvantage of this slightly underpowered plane is flying high, hot and heavy. Tom found the biggest learning curve is transitioning from hard surface to water landings. On the plus side, the plane is easy to fly, inexpensive to maintain and a joy to fly over water at 500 feet, low and slow. Our last presenter was John Watt with his 2017 Cessna Stationair 206 HD. As John mentioned, "He's not quite sure why he bought this monster of an airplane." This beautiful bird is powered by a Lycoming T HP and has a staggering burn rate of 17 gallons per hour at 75% power. The aircraft holds some serious fuel load at 87 gallons and has an endurance of 6 hours. After purchasing the aircraft, John found out there was an AD (airworthiness directive) issued that required an engine teardown every 50 hours. After considerable consultation between the manuafacture and AME, all issues have been resolved. In closing, John noted the plane is very loud and very much appreciates noise cancelling head sets. Thank you Allan for organizing the meeting and putting together the presentation. If anyone is in the market for an airplane and just wants to gain insight into aircraft ownership, COPA Flight 6 is a resource for aircraft owners and experienced pilots. The next COPA Flight 6 meeti ng will be held on Tuesday, February 5, 2019, at 7pm at the Victoria Flying Club. This month's speaker will be our own COPA Flight 6 co-founder and former COPA Director, Bryan Webster! Many of us know Bryan best from his aviation emergency water egress training courses, but he also has over hours including experience in bush flying up north, bird-dogging for water bombers, corporate, medevac, cargo flying with FedEx, and Harbour Air. He has flown 35 different aircraft with wheels, retractables, skis, and floats, and he still does checkouts on Beavers and Caravans. And also fun private flying like the rest of us. As always you neither need to be a member of COPA National to attend. As your voice for the Freedom to Fly in Canada your participation is appreciated. copaflight6@gmail.com Blog: copaflight6.blogspot.ca COPA Quadrant 19
