Licence - valid internationally because it meets the international standards of ICAO ADMINISTRATION, COURSE INTRO, PILOT LICENSING, INTRO TO THE AIRPLANE 15 Every Licence and Permit has a requirement with respect to: Age Medical Fitness Knowledge Experience Skill

6 ADMINISTRATION, COURSE INTRO, PILOT LICENSING, INTRO TO THE AIRPLANE 16 Medical Categories Category 4 - validates a Student Pilot Permit or Recreational Pilot Permit Category 3 - validates a Private Pilot Licence (PPL) Medicals must be renewed: Under 40? 5 years Over 40? 2 years ADMINISTRATION, COURSE INTRO, PILOT LICENSING, INTRO TO THE AIRPLANE 17 Medical Categories Class 2 - Validates an Air Traffic Controller Licence (not a pilot licence) Class 1 - Validates a Commercial or Airline Transport Pilot Licence We will deal with Category 3 and 4 right now ADMINISTRATION, COURSE INTRO, PILOT LICENSING, INTRO TO THE AIRPLANE 18 Student Pilot Permit This is the Permit everyone needs in order to fly the airplane solo (alone) for the purpose of gaining experience for a higher Permit or Licence. Everybody must first qualify for a Student Pilot Permit before moving to a higher Licence or Permit

Knowledge: PSTAR exam Experience: Enough to fly solo safely Skill: Enough to fly solo safely ADMINISTRATION, COURSE INTRO, PILOT LICENSING, INTRO TO THE AIRPLANE 20 After the Student Pilot Permit: There are two choices to consider: 1. Recreational Pilot Permit 2. Private Pilot Licence ADMINISTRATION, COURSE INTRO, PILOT LICENSING, INTRO TO THE AIRPLANE 21 The Recreational Pilot Permit (RPP) is OK if you: Intend to fly primarily in local area Only need to carry 1 (one) passenger Don t want to fly at night or seek advanced ratings Only want to fly in Canada

8 ADMINISTRATION, COURSE INTRO, PILOT LICENSING, INTRO TO THE AIRPLANE 22 Recreational Pilot Permit cont d If you are 15 to 17 years old the Recreational Permit is your ONLY choice at this time Otherwise you probably want to obtain a Private Pilot Licence. ADMINISTRATION, COURSE INTRO, PILOT LICENSING, INTRO TO THE AIRPLANE 23 Recreational Pilot Permit Age: 15 Medical Fitness: Category 4 Knowledge: 60% on RPAER Experience: 25 hours Skill Flight Test with Designated Examiner ADMINISTRATION, COURSE INTRO, PILOT LICENSING, INTRO TO THE AIRPLANE 24 Recreational Permit cont d The RPP may be upgraded to a PPL provided that you meet ALL of the additional PPL requirements Tip: Write the Private Pilot Examination when you get your RPP if you think you might want to upgrade; it will save you writing it later

Radio Operator - required to use the aircraft radio 3. PPAER - written test to qualify for PPL - written at Transport Canada 4. Multi Engine Rating - Twice the fun! 5. Type Rating - If it s really fast or requires more than one pilot you need one of these (YES you can fly an Airbus 380 with a PPL if you want!) Airline Transport Pilot License - you can get paid to fly big airplanes You need at least a CPL to hold a Flight Instructor Rating
