Tuesday, July am - Meet in hotel lobby for short walk to beach am - Short boat ride on the Indian Ocean to observe and visit with bottle nose dolphins 9.30am - Drive to McCords Hospital (privately run denominational hospital), Berea, Durban for discussion about health care provision and AIDS care at the epicenter of the South African epidemic - Visit McCords outpatient AIDS treatment facility 12.45pm - Drive to Ghandi Settlement (South African home of the Mahatma) for briefing on integrated economic development programs for re-development of Inanda/Kwamashu areas - Visit school founded by John Dube, one of the founders of the African National Congress - ANC (South African governing party and predominant anti-apartheid liberation group)
3 Approx 5.00pm W e d n e s d a y, J u l y am - Depart hotel with baggage to airport for flight to East London, Eastern Province 6.00am - Depart by air to East London 7.30am - Arrive East London and drive to Dimbasa, a former apartheid tribal homeland resettlement area - Visit Dimbasa Community Health Centre for discussion of HIV/AIDS services and treatment in poor rural environment - Visit local households for discussion with community members about HIV/AIDS and other issues - Meet with grannies participating in lovelife HIV/AIDS education and support programs 4.00pm - Board flight to Cape Town 5.30pm - Arrive Cape Town and check into Table Bay Hotel Thursday, July am - Depart hotel for site visits in Cape Town metropolitan area visiting clinics, households and community-level programs together with African journalists participating in annual CNN African Journalism Awards Program pm - Participate in ceremony for the annual Nelson Mandela Award for Health and Human Rights, The Castle, Cape Town, followed by lunch.
