Day 3: Johannesburg Arrive in Johannesburg Welcome to Johannesburg, the heart of South Africa and the largest city in the world that isn't situated on a lake, river or coastline. Take an expertly guided tour of Soweto: Homes of Winne Mandela and Bishop Desmond Tutu Former home of Nelson Mandela Take an expertly guided tour of Johannesburg Visit the Apartheid Museum Overnight in Johannesburg Day 4: Kruger National Park area Travel via Witbank and Middelburg to Nelspruit Transfer to Kruger Park Continue to Kruger National Park, where you will spend the next few nights. Named after former South Africa president Paul Kruger, an ardent naturalist deeply committed to wildlife protection, Kruger is considered the best-managed wildlife park on the entire African continent. Covering 6.2 million acres, the park is comprised of 16 eco-zones (areas with their own terrain, altitude and amount of rainfall), making it home to nearly 150 mammal species and more than 500 species of birds. With an estimated 1,500 lions, 12,000 elephants, 7,000 rhinos and 27,000 buffalo in the park, you're sure to spot magnificent animals here. 4 Day 11: Cape Town Free Day in Cape Town Optional: Langa Township Tour ($89 pre-tour) Head to Langa, a former South African township or dormitory-styled, racially divided suburb. En route, you'll gain local insight into the socio-political realities of pre and post-apartheid. With your expert guide, you'll visit the local community center where residents can learn job and life skills. Next you'll visit a music studio where you'll practice drum lessons with local musicians. On your guided walking tour, you'll connect with locals before visiting a local preschool and a shebeen (community pub). End your excursion with lunch at Lelapa, located in the center of the township. Day 12: Cape Town Depart Enjoy free time in Cape Town until departure Transfer to the airport for your return flight Your tour director assists with your transfer to the airport, where you will check in for your return flight home.
