Keasipai Song MP, Vanuatu Workshop Description: The 7 th CDI PPF in 2005 will provide a forum for select Pacific representatives to discuss public leadership with regional and international colleagues in a practical, non partisan and dynamic environment. Building on regional institutional and personal networks of members of parliament, the PPF seeks to explore the foundations of public leadership in the Pacific Islands, Australia and New Zealand and thereby strengthen and enhance the political governance of Forum Island Countries (FICs). Conceived and supported by CDI, in association in 2005 with the Parliament of the Republic of the Fiji Islands, The Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID), New Zealandʹs International Aid & Development Agency (NZAID), and the State, Society and Governance in Melanesia Project (SSGM), the annual CDI PPF constitutes part of Australia s ongoing support for elected public officials, secretariat staff and the formal institutions of political governance in the Pacific. 3

4 Conducted within the context of the host nation/parliament of the Republic of the Fiji Islands, and with the overarching theme of Foundations of Public Leadership the 7 th CDI PPF will expose participants to new ideas, and allow them to engage and exchange with fellow political practitioners. Workshop Outcomes: The 7 th CDI PPF aims towards improving political governance and political practice in partner countries by exposing participants to issues concerning parliamentary practices, democratic institutional design, constituency politics and other themes that may be applicable in their home countries. The 7 th CDI PPF will also contributes, at the MP level, to building capacity to manage governance challenges in the Pacific better through regionalism. CDI places a premium on encouraging the advancement of and skills transfer to young Pacific political leaders. 4
