1 Jan.-Mar., 2008 Notes from the trailhead I have to admit that, although I love every season, winter is my favorite. I know that many of you probably disagree with me, but I think that I have a few good reasons why it should be yours also. First of all, what other time of year gives you bonus days off (in the form of snow days)? Have you ever noticed that people seem to be a little nicer and friendlier when it snows? I m sure you will agree that your neighborhood is at its most beautiful when blanketed with new fallen snow. Take time to try to enjoy the season and get outdoors and see if you agree with me. With all of that in mind, I am predicting a snow filled winter this year. That means that I ll finally get to use my new snowshoes that my wife, Allison, bought me last year. For those of you who have yet to explore winter sports, I recommend attending the Winter Trails Day event ( at High Point State Park in Sussex County on January 12 th. This event gives you an opportunity to try different snowshoes and cross country skis free of charge. There are a few other winter events that I think you should consider If you already have a pair of snowshoes, feel free to join me on a beginners snowshoe hike, which is listed in the schedule, on New Year s Day. January 25 th 27 th is the all club Winter Outing on the Tug Hill Plateau, an Adirondack-like wilderness, located in upstate New York, that boasts of the greatest snowfall in the state (see hike schedule for more details). There will be plenty of snowshoeing and XC skiing. Of course, there are also a number of other XC and snowshoe events throughout our schedule, so there is no excuse to stay indoors! In spring, our chapter has a big milestone coming up, so mark your calendar now. We will be celebrating our 40 th Anniversary April 13 th with a catered Brunch at the Frelinghuysen Arboretum in Morristown. Keep your eyes on the mail for further details as the time gets closer. 3 IN MEMORIAM - DR. ALBERT ROSEN If you were on Al and Shirley Rosen's Christmas list, each year you received a picture of the two of them on top of some mountain in any part of the world Mt. Washington, Kilimanjaro, Nepal, the Andes, Antarctica. Hiking was what they did when Shirley was not helping Al run his pediatrician's office in Fair Lawn. Now both are gone. Shirley died several years ago, and Al left us on November 18 th at age 90. Al had been in failing health for some years. His practice was in a part of his home and he maintained it far past any usual retirement age, so attached was he to his patients. And they were attached to him, many of them returning to consult him even after they went off to college. It is probably fair to say that he cared for more Fair Lawn youngsters than any other pediatrician. The chickens, bees, goats, and other livestock he raised in his backyard no doubt added appeal to office visits. When asked whether zoning permitted such activities he smiled and observed that the mayor's children were among his patients. Al's service as Health and Safety Chair for the New York New Jersey chapter of the Appalachian Mountain Club extended over several decades and continued as Emeritus after he was no longer able to participate actively. Fellow ADK members hiked with him and Shirley as they achieved membership in the Adirondack 46ers and the Catskill 3500 Club. Those of us who were fortunate enough to know Al Rosen honor his memory. 4 SNOWSHOEING TIPS & TECHNIQUES From Winter Hiking, Backpacking & Snowshoeing at Breaking the Trail: If you are snowshoeing with other people (safer than going alone), take turns leading. It gets very tiring breaking the trail. If you have energetic, want-to-go-fast young people in your group, put them in front and leave them there for as long as is practical and safe. Good for them, good for you. When leading, take into consideration the pace of the slowest member of the group. When leading, make your steps short enough so everyone in the group can follow in them. When following, try to stay in the leader's footsteps whenever possible. This conserves your energy and retains a better, well-defined trail for those who follow you. Take breaks, as necessary, to make adjustments to your clothing--try to stay dry--avoid chills. Take frequent breaks to drink water and eat something. Snowshoeing is strenuous and burns off calories and uses up body fluids in the form of perspiration. REMEMBER: In the winter, because of the cold, you may not always get the obvious signs of perspiring, but you are, nonetheless, and those fluids must be replaced. Check out the schedule for possible snowshoe outings on: Jan. 1, 5, 17, 19, 24, 26, 27; Feb. 2, 10, 14, 16, 23; March 2, 6, 22, 29. Dave Madden 'Jeopardy!' mega-winner hiking East Coast to aid veterans, kin Fans of the classic game show "Jeopardy!" might remember David Madden. In 2005 he won more than $430,000 on the show, one of the largest totals ever. Now, the former Ridgewood resident, 26, is taking a slower, step-bystep approach to raising some cash for charity. A member of North Jersey ADK Madden opted off the serene Appalachian Trail (AT) this year so he could meet and greet the public. Madden completed the AT through New England to New Jersey. He's now hiking the East Coast from Edmundston, New Brunswick, Canada, to the Florida Keys to raise funds for the Fisher House Foundation. The private-public partnership helps family members stay near a loved one who is hospitalized at U.S. military and Veteran s Administration medical centers. He hopes to raise $50,000 for Fisher House through the hike. His roommate from Princeton, Alex Wilson, is recuperating in San Antonio, Texas. He's a first lieutenant in the Army and was injured just outside Baghdad in May and lost a foot. After completing a book on his family's history for his grandfather, George Madden who will be 90 in November 2008, Madden hopes to teach history in Newark or New York City.
