1 January - March, 2004 Notes from the Trailhead: As I sit down to write this, I can't believe that the year is almost over. Time seems to slip by faster and faster with each passing year. It seems like I just finished unpacking from our Fall Weekend in the Catskills and now I'm trying to decide which hikes I'll lead in April. Our Fall Weekend was another fantastic event! (See some pictures on page seven.) This year s event at Williams Lake Resort was possibly one of the most enjoyable in recent memory. The food was great, the company wonderful, and the weather fantastic. On one of the Saturday hikes, Ned and Laura Gardner were joined by about 10 other ADK members as they finished the last of their Catskill 3500 peaks on Kaaterskill High Peak. The other group hiked along the Shawangunk Ridge with beautiful vistas of the Hudson Valley. That evening, we started the evening with a slide presentation by Stephen Forte of his recent trip to base camp of Mount Everest. Later we were entertained by the Karaoke song styling and dance routine of Rob Lehmann. On Sunday, the group divided up with most spending the afternoon strolling and shopping in New Paltz while a smaller group climbed Bearpen and Vly Mountains (bringing me within two peaks of finishing my Catskill 3500). If you didn't get a chance to join us this year, keep it in mind for next year. The best way to get the most from your membership in ADK is to attend some of our hikes and events. If you're new to ADK, a great way to get your feet wet is to join me on one of my Urban Adventure Hikes. These are more social events than hikes. You'll have a chance to meet some great people and spend some time in NYC visiting places you've always wanted to see. So far, we've visited The Cloister's Museum, the Little Red Light House (under the GW Bridge), Ground Zero, and the National Museum of the American Indian. Upcoming Urban Adventures will include Inwood Hill Park and, Little Italy and the Tenement Museum, Liberty State Park and Ellis Island, and much more. C. Tausch, Chapter Chair page 1

6 THANKS, PAUL Since joining our Chapter, Paul Makus has used his digital camera and GPS skills to chronicle ADK hikes. Special thanks for providing many pictures for TRAIL TALK and our Chapter scrapbook! HUNTING INFORMATION can be found at the following websites. 7 Harvest Moon Madness and More... Recently, a small group from our chapter attended ADK s Seventh Annual Silent and Live Auction, held in Saratoga Springs. The event is a major fund-raiser to benefit programs in conservation and advocacy, education, and recreation. It was a wonderful opportunity to meet members from other chapters, network and share ideas. This year, for the first time, each ADK chapter was invited to donate a theme basket which was to be auctioned off. North Jersey was the only chapter that gave two rather impressive baskets! Our chapter also made its presence known during the live auction segment of the evening program, with some of our attendees coming home with more than just memories! If you enjoy getting away for the week-end, seeing new places, laughing, meeting new people, walking, shopping, history, Victorian homes, good food (and drink), music and museums, hiking, then save the date: November 6th, Keep posted!
