1 JAN.-MAR Well, it s that time of the year again time to begin our hibernation. Sooner than we would like, the temperature begins to fall, the sun sets earlier and earlier, and snow is right around the corner. Most hikers pack away their boots and packs and dream of Spring. Then there are those of us crazy hikers who look forward to this time of year. We dig out our winter gear and hope for a snow filled winter. We look forward to having the hiking trails to ourselves, clean crisp air, and the best views of the year. Unfortunately for us, more and more people are discovering the beauty of winter sports, especially snowshoeing and cross country skiing. Snowshoeing has gained so much popularity, that almost 1.5 million people identify themselves as snowshoers. That s an increase of over 60% in the last ten years. Of that group, about 46% are women and 45% are over the age of 40. Despite the ease of the sport, you burn almost 50% more calories than walking or running at the same speed. Cross Country Skiing, on the other hand, boasts over 2.4 million participants every year with over 42% of them being women. Despite it being a low risk, low impact sport, Cross Country Skiing burns more calories per hour than any other sport and is considered to be the best cardiovascular fitness activity. While these statistics may make these two sports seem like they are too hard, the fact is that both are easy to learn and create a great excuse to enjoy the outdoors in winter. As a matter of fact, if you can walk, you can snowshoe (the hardest part is strapping them to your feet). Cross Country Skiing can be learned with only a few hours of instruction and has very little risk of injury. Take the time this winter to explore the outdoors. A great place to start is on Winter Trails Day on January 6 th at High Point State Park. For more information, go to There are also plenty of opportunities to get started by participating in the beginner events listed in this schedule. Call the leader or check out our website for opportunities to rent equipment. Even if you choose to not join us on the trails this winter, don t forget to join us at our Annual Meeting on Sunday, April 15th. It s always a fun evening of good food and an interesting program. Hopefully you came out to our Winter Gathering at Houlihan s Restaurant or perhaps our Fall Weekend at the Roaring Brook Ranch in the Adirondacks. Our goal is to add more social events to our schedule for everyone to enjoy. If you have any ideas of other events that you d like to see, send me an at adknjc@gmail.com. See you on the trails! 3 Roaring Review This year s fall weekend at The Roaring Brook Ranch Resort in the Adirondack mountains was a roaring success. We had a full schedule of activities with something to do for everyone. Making a choice of what to do was the hardest part of the weekend. Early arrivals on Friday took advantage of the daylight to explore (and scout out for next year) hiking trails on the east side of Lake George. They found some interesting places and made sure to be back in time for dinner. Hikes of all levels were offered on Saturday but our group opted to stick together and plod onward and upward to the summit of breathtaking Black Mountain. The views, the weather, the trail lunch, the invigorating mountain air, the company, the foliage, the streams, the ponds, the adventure.anyway, we all returned that day with a smile on our faces. Perfect, perfect weather sure helps. Dinner on Saturday evening was followed by a slide show. There was even a D.J. and dancing! Too much to do, too little time. Sunday brought more adventures. Boat rides for some, walking around town for others, car rides to new places, and of course, hiking. A small contingency hiked up to the Hadley Fire Tower and were fortunate enough to meet Jack Freeman, author of Views from on High, sitting in the tower! Would I return next year? Definitely. A special thanks to Jeff Sovelove for his organizational skills and also to the participants who made it a special event. Donna Ellis Sign up for ADK-North Jersey's E-Trail Talk! Dear Trail Conference Members, Congratulations on the purchase of the "Sterling Forge" property in Sterling Forest State Park, the culmination of 18 years of work and a total investment of more than $80 million. With the purchase of the last 571 acres of the original park, the public can now enjoy more than 20,000 acres of forests, wetlands, and lakes that ties into Harriman/Bear Mountain State Park in New York and the Wyanokie Highlands in New Jersey. You can be extremely proud of the key role that the Trail Conference has played in creating this nationally-recognized model of bi-state cooperation and conservation, from former Executive Director JoAnn Dolan's leadership with the Public-Private Partnership to our current active participation in the Sterling Forest Partnership and the Ramapo Highlands Coalition. We can now focus on adding some other parcels to the northern portion of the park, and on working with PIPC to build the best possible trails network in and around Sterling. Thanks to all of our members who have written their local, state, and federal legislators and helped us get to this very happy day. Best regards, Bill William P. 5 Conservation Issues and Updates for New Jersey: Looking Forward into 2007 by Brenda Holzinger, Conservation Chair The 2006 Elections and NJ Public Question #2: On November 7th, New Jersey voters approved ballot question #2 by a margin of 60%-40%. This action creates an ongoing source of funding for capital projects at our state and local parks, natural areas and historic sites. This is a much needed boost for the infrastructure of New Jersey s public recreation areas. Also on November 7 th, as I m sure you are already aware, voters around the United States elected democrats into Congressional positions very important to the shaping of environmental policy. As a result, we can look forward into 2007 with much optimism and a renewed resolve for environmental conservation. Thank you for your help with this important victory! Garden State Preservation Trust replenishment: The Garden State Preservation Trust (GSPT), the funding mechanism that pays for the preservation of open space, farmland and historic sites in New Jersey, will officially run out of money in One of the nation s largest publicly-funded land preservation efforts, the Trust has preserved hundreds of thousands of valuable acres and provided matching dollars for non-profit organizations and the estimated $277 million dedicated open space taxes collected annually by each of the 21 counties and 217 of our 566 municipalities. Statewide and local environmental, sportsmen, urban park advocates, historic preservation and faith-based organizations have joined together to urge New Jersey Legislators and the Governor to replenish the GSPT so we can continue our preservation efforts in the garden state. Please support this campaign! You can find more information about the GSPT on the web at this site: index.html. Also, look for updates on our ADK web page: The New Jersey Highlands Water Preservation and Planning Act: The Draft Regional Master Plan for the New Jersey Highlands region was released in late November 2006, as required by the Highlands Water Protection and Planning Act, page 5

6 which became law in This Plan is the result of over a decade of effort to legislatively protect the area of New Jersey that provides 65% of the state s residents with drinking water from overdevelopment. New Jersey s Highlands area is part of a larger region that stretches from Pennsylvania through New Jersey and New York and into Connecticut and has been protected collectively via federal legislation. New Jersey s Highlands area encompasses about 880,000 acres in seven counties, stretching from Phillipsburg in the south to Ringwood in the north. The area contains some of the state s best hiking areas and is a beautiful landscape of hilly forests and many lakes, ponds and streams. You can find more information by visiting the website of the agency that wrote the Plan, the NJ Highlands Council, at this address: NJ State Trails Plan: As of mid-december, the New Jersey Trails Plan Update draft is not yet complete. When complete, it will be available for public viewing at this website: The results of an online survey and a series of workshops conducing during the fall 2006 are available now at this address: I urge you to check the NJ Trails plan website regularly for updates so you can read the draft plan yourself and learn how you might be able to participate in the process of commenting on the draft. Our voices as hikers need to be heard! Sterling Forest: In late November 2006, Governor Pataki announced the purchase of the final 575 acres in the heart of Sterling Forest for $13.5 million, protecting it from future development. This purchase marks the end of a two-decade battle to save the state forest -- 19,500 acres of spectacular woodlands and lakes sprawling south across the New York border into New Jersey s Passaic and Bergen counties -- and represents a major victory for both environmentalists and government. Thanks to all of you who contributed to this effort! (See the message from Bill O Hearn of the NY-NJ Trail Conference on page four.) Enjoy the beautiful areas of New Jersey and New York this winter get out and xc ski, snow shoe or hike! page 6

7 Web Bargains by Jeff Sovelove Like most of you I just love a good bargain, especially when it comes to hiking equipment. Also like most of you I have my favorite websites that I like to check whenever I m in need of hiking gear and I thought I d share some of them with you. A few things to watch for and to be aware of when shopping online: 1. What is the site s return policy? (very important) 2 Check the shipping charges before finalizing your purchase. $20 shipping on a $10 item is no bargain. This is, unfortunately, rampant on EBay these days. Some sellers will price their items ridiculously low then hit you up for whopping shipping charges. 3. Do they have a customer service number where you can speak to a live person? 4. Do they show the item in stock? What is their normal ship time? 5. Are their online transactions secure and certified by an independent third party such as Bizrate or BBB Online? That being said, here are a few of my favorite web shopping site for hiking equipment. The Sportsman s Guide I ve ordered from them many times in the past and I find their selection, prices, and service to be outstanding. Shipping charges are also very reasonable. Campmor Need I say more? Everything you could ever ask for under one website. Their prices may not be the lowest but this is the place for those hard to find items like a winter hose kit for your Camelbak. Sierra Trading Post Again, generally good, reasonable shipping, good selection. This is primarily a close out site so when you see what you want buy it! It may not he available tomorrow. Be sure to check the Clearance Barn for limited stock items. Ramsey Outdoor I ve gotten some good buys on this site in the past. They re based in our neck of the woods so shipping times and charges tend to be reasonable. Don t forget the mainstream big box retailers, such as Target, Wal- Mart and others. Just because they re not dedicated outdoor stores doesn t mean that you won t find what you re looking for at a very good price I got my hiking poles for less than $10 each at one of them. And remember a few general points: -When possible, buy off season to get some great buys. -Buy in multiples to minimize your shipping charges per piece. You ll pay about the same to ship one wicking shirt as for three. -Stick with established, reputable retailers for the fewest problems and best shopping experience. -Especially with clearance sites, buy it when you see it. -Buyer beware! If it looks too good to be true it probably is. Discounts may be available with ADK or NYNJTC membership. page 7
