1 page 1 June September, 2005 Summer is here! We ve already had a few 90+ degree days this year, and I m loving it! Of course, I had a taste of the warm weather a few weeks ago while in Hawaii on my honeymoon. While Hawaii is captivating, there is no place like home. One of the reasons that I am willing to deal with our hot and humid summers is that I know that I will be rewarded with a splendiferous fall (how often do you get to use that word?) and a resplendent winter (I m breaking out all the big words for this article!). Of course, this article is supposed to be about hiking and not about me trying to use big words, so here I go Please keep in mind while hiking over the next few months that summer can be just as dangerous as winter if you are not prepared. Make sure to bring plenty of water with you to avoid dehydration and heat stroke. Keep in mind that the average day s loss of fluids under normal conditions is about 1 gallon. But the amount of loss can be significantly increased by sweating caused by strenuous exercise such as hiking. The effects of even mild dehydration are decreased coordination, fatigue, and impairment of judgment. These factors can increase the difficulty of a hike and can lead to a physical mishap or getting lost. The best way to combat the heat is to stay well hydrated and eat plenty of salty snacks (I make it a rule to always have plenty of Gatorade in my pack, but a good alternative is to add one teaspoon of salt per quart of drinking water) and make sure you take frequent breaks out of the sun. Heat stroke, on the other hand, is a life-threatening emergency. Without proper care, heat stroke victims will most likely die. Once our cooling mechanism fails, core temperature rises rapidly. Death can occur in as little as 30 minutes. When the core temperature rises, the brain, which can only function in a very narrow temperature range, begins to fail. In an effort to cool the blood and lower the core temperature, the brain will dilate all the blood vessels in the skin. As a result, the skin becomes RED and HOT, even though it may still be WET. As the brain overheats, the individual may become disoriented, combative, argumentative, and may hallucinate wildly. The same prevention methods that work for dehydration and exhaustion will work for heat stroke. The guiding principle is to stay well hydrated. Do not rely on your thirst mechanism to tell you when and how much you need to drink. Under conditions of exertion, it is probably impossible to drink too much water. On that cheery note, enjoy your summer and I ll see you on the trails! Christopher Tausch

4 Special Thanks Now that I have sewn the White Birch Patch on my backpack and I have regained my speaking abilities, I want to thank all the people responsible for my attaining this award. First, my three mentors: Betty Heald who told me she wanted to lead from the rear, Rita Boyd for sharing all her hiking wisdom with me and Ed Fanslau, who has always been my how to be a good hike leader role model. Without these three, I would never have received this award. I also want to thank my friends for being ever ready to go out on a hike. The best thing I have done since I retired was to join North Jersey ADK and become acquainted with such a special group of individuals. Thank you all for being my friends! Phyllis Key Congratulations to our three recipients of the White Birch Award: Phyllis Key, Chris Tausch, and Rob Lehmann. Eileen Berch leading our group on the Orange Heritage Trail bike path on a beautiful day in April. page 4
