Wells Gray Provincial - Destination BC/Max Zeddler Help Protect Wildlife for Everyone s Enjoyment Here are some tips on driving and viewing wildlife You are in bear country Bears are wild animals and demand your respect. Strong and agile, they will defend their young and their territory. All bears are potentially dangerous. Never feed or approach a bear, especially a cub, as the mother will not be far away. Stay in your camper if you spot a bear while driving. Be especially alert when hiking into the wind, as they cannot pickup your scent. wardens may post signs in areas with bear warnings or trail closures. Be careful of wildlife on highways Road kills take more than two hundred big game animals a year in Alberta and BC. Many accidents can be prevented. Watch for signs showing big horn sheep, moose and elk are in the area. The warnings remind you that wild animals frequently cross the road. Be especially careful at dawn and dusk when they usually come out to feed along the highways. Speed zones are strickly enforced (70 kph) on the Trans Canada Hwy in Banff, Jasper, Yoho, and Kootenay National s. Elk warnings The national parks provide natural elk habitat. These large animals can be dangerous, especially during calving and mating seasons. In Spring, from mid-may to the end of June is calving season. Cow elk will chase people who approach their new born too closely. Mating season starts in late August. Male elk are very aggressive and known to charge vehicles when annoyed. Always keep paces between you and an elk. 20» 2019 Spring & Fall Campground Discounts

Super Camping 2018 The best way to describe the Kootenay Rockies is as Canada s most stunning mountain scenery. Year after year, visitors are dazed by the enormity of the mountains that rise up from the region s valleys. The sensation of gazing up at towering glacial peaks humbles the region s visitors. Even the most hardened travellers are unable to experience the Rockies without being touched by a sense of awe. The Kootenay Rockies region stretches from the Okanagan Valley in the west to the Alberta border in the east. The region contains four mountain ranges: the Selkirks, Purcells, Monashees and of course, the Rockies. A map of the area immediately shows a number of Provincial and National s that dot the region. It s in these areas of mountain wilderness that visitors will find the most spectacular, and protected scenery in the province. Fish the provinces best fresh water lakes and secluded saltwater inlets. British Columbia s wild history comes to life with rodeos, heritage villages and historic First Nations communities. In the 1800s miners from all over the world rushed to the Cariboo Chilcotin. The small towns boomed into cities almost overnight with men eager to strike it rich in the gold fields. Gold fever had hit British Columbia and with it came a legendary era of saloons, cowboys and Wild West frontier adventure. Eventually, the gold rush died out. With it went the miners and the bustling cities soon turned into empty buildings. Today, the legends and ghost towns have been faithfully brought back to life in towns like Barkerville, but the frontier adventure has always been alive and well.
