3 Stilton Parish Council JUNE 2009 MEETING TOPICS Skate Park The lease is almost completed and will be signed as soon as possible. Church Close bus shelter Still no news from the District Council. Playing Field The Parish Council is consulting with Councillor Mitchell about the erection and funding of the CCTV that should soon be on the field. The inner entrance is to be tarmaced. More litter bins are to be provided along the bridleway. A plan for street lights along the bridleway is to be submitted to the Parish Council, who have agreed to make a contribution towards the cost. Stilton Parish Room and office The building is nearly completed. The interior is being fitted out and furniture chosen. The building will be open on July 11 & 12 for visits. Stilton in Bloom The baskets are ready to be erected. An extra one for outside the Cemetery has been ordered. Apreece Way Green A design for landscaping the area with trees and bushes is being drawn up and costed. The hedge along the southern boundary is complete and consideration is being given to one along the Manor Road fence. Barn Close play area A meeting with residents affected by anti-social behaviour has been arranged. Stilton Memorial Hall Documents on the ownership of the Hall have come to light. Local solicitors are to be asked if they have any information. Planning 20 Church Street Stilton Parish Council was asked for its comments on the application for nine houses. The Council's concerns were about the narrow access to and from the site; inadequate provision of parking spaces on the site and the already congested state of Church Street. Also, the developer is expected to donate 22,500 for secondary education which the Parish Council feels should be at least shared with Stilton School. 53 High Street An application to build 2 houses on the site has been rejected and gone to appeal. Other Matters Councillors will each inspect a section of the village and report back on any maintenance matters so that the relevant authorities can be informed. Village Centre The area around The Pump has been jet washed and the telephone box partially repaired. Flower baskets and containers have been planted, and several businesses have their own flower displays. It is hoped that the District Council will soon indicate what actions can be taken to improve the buildings that still let down the heart of the village. Come and See! Stilton Parish Council invites you to come and see the smart new Meeting Room in the Cemetery, Church Street. Peterborough couple Berni & Dougie Leggett are helping make the world a better place by organising shipments of clothes, toys and useful items to the Dimcho Debelianov orphanage in Bulgaria. Their current venture is to send another lorry load out in September, this time including boxes of goods for a baby orphanage and a hospital in the same town. They can only do so much by themselves to help the children, so they are appealing for your help. If you would like to help with donations of suitable items or, even more welcome, contributions towards the cost of transport, why not visit to find out more and then get in touch? The Stilton Skate Park has been up and running since December and is due to get CCTV cameras for the whole playing field and the three outstanding ramps in the summer of this year. Over the last two years we have raised 85,000 and have a further 46,000 promised to cover the CCTV and the final Ramps. The Youths have raised 6,000 locally and are instrumental in getting the latest bid. The organisation for this project has been carried out by a group of four adults, plus a lot of Youths. In particular Leigh Bettles (who has retired) the past Chairman Emily Warren, the Present Chairman Rob Weir and the seven young reps. have all helped to make this possible. The adults, who are the Trustees for the governing charity, which is 'Stilton Children & Young People's Facilities Association' (SC-YP-FA) are: Carol Warren the Youth Leader, Peter Mitchell District Councillor, Ian Parmenter the Parents Representative and John Warner Parish Council. News from Stilton Sk8z - Where Next? PETER MITCHELL TAKES STOCK AND LOOKS FORWARD SO, WHAT NEXT? As a charity, we were set up to provide facilities for the Youths of Stilton. Some of you may remember the early questionnaires, where we had a good response from the village and were told what the youths wanted. High on their list was a Skate Park and a MUGA (Multi-Unit Games Area). We've done the Skate Park and now intend to work with the Parish Council to establish just what YOU would like next. However we do need a bit of help! We need a management team for the Skate Park, to do routine inspections and raise the necessary funding to cover insurance and maintenance. We have written to some of the Parents but we need more. For the new venture we would like parents of some of the younger children to help us with the organisation and the creation of a new youth committee. If you are interested then please contact either Carol or myself. 5 Join the SSBP LOCAL BUSINESSMEN UNITE! The Sawtry & Stilton Business Partnership is a new and vibrant business group established to serve the interests of the over 300 small businesses in the local area. A joint venture created by Ralph & Jane Maloney and Adam & Clare Merton, it s a non-profit partnership with any funds over at the end of the financial year to be donated to a local charity. Part of its vision is the better promotion of its members businesses, through such channels as: A Members Directory - the SSBP website marketing local businesses to a wider world and featuring: Links to other Business Clubs A Members-Only 'For Sale or Wanted' area A Barter/Trade-off club. Very taxefficient! A monthly meeting with a chance to network and meet guest speakers Its fourth meeting will be on 7th July at the Sawtry WMC at 7:00 for 7:30pm. The group has already signed up seven members, with two more to come and over 20 showing real interest within a week of application forms being issued. If you would like to find out more about this interesting initiative, you can: 8 Visit the SSBP website: Call Ralph Maloney, SSBP Chairman, on: (01487) (day) (eves) enquiries@ssbpartnership.org Why not find out more? You can never have too many friends! John Bayliss The family of the late John Bayliss would like to thank everyone who gave so generously at the recent service of thanksgiving held at Stilton Parish Church. A total of 265 will go the Alzheimer s Society, the research charity chosen by Mr Bayliss as the beneficiary of the collection. Time Team Time Again! EVERYBODY S FAVOURITE ECCENTRICS RETURN Regular readers will remember the excitement of Time Team s first visit to Stilton in 2006, following Rick Landy s amazing discovery of an almost intact Roman cheese press out on the Fens. Obviously impressed by our area s rich archaeological heritage, the team are returning this month to explore the site of the Norman Cross Napoleonic PoW depot. It s hoped they might be able to clear up the mystery concerning the exact location of the burial ground, where around 1770 inmates were buried, most as a result of a typhus outbreak. A Booby Prize! LADIES: LEND YOUR SUPPORT(S) TO THE BREAST CANCER APPEAL As you may have seen on regional TV recently, the Breast Cancer Care charity is running a Bra Bank fund-raising event. Donated boulder-holders are either distributed to charities in the developing world, or recycled in the UK, so whatever the condition of your unwanted foundation garments, they will help make a difference in the fight against cancer. The local collection point is Holme School, where the Head Teacher is supporting (!) this worthy cause. Every single bra, no matter how old and over-loved, will be used, so talk to your friends, mothers, sisters and daughters, get them to talk to their friends, and then bring along as many unwanted bras as you can gather (tied up in a bag) for donation into the Bra Bank. Thank you! Records indicated that the site lay under what is now the northbound lane of the A1(M), but excavations carried out before work was permitted failed to find any evidence. It is now suspected that the burial ground may actually lie to the north of the depot site. This new programme is scheduled for screening sometime in We hope to confirm the date in time for you all to pull up your sofas and watch it. Stilton Over-60 s Invite you to an open Tea & Chat Afternoon Wed 15th July 2pm onwards Church Meeting Room Featuring: Fund-raising Auction (Good clean items please; no bric-a-brac) Table-top Sale of Home-made Cakes Raffle Come and join us! 9
6 Local Issues NORTH & WEST HUNTS NEIGHBOURHOOD POLICING TEAM New Faces Inspector Ian Ford and Sgt Keren Pope have now joined the team. At the last Neighbourhood Panel Meeting held at Sawtry on 3rd June, one of the three priorities for the next three months was anti-social behaviour in Stilton. At present, the situation seems to have improved after intensive efforts by the police and the Community Safety Partnership. If you are disturbed or worried by groups of young people, or if you see acts of vandalism, please report to Barry Chamberlain. CALL IT IN Dog fouling (photos are very useful) and excessive noise should be reported to the Environmental Health Department at HuntS District Council ( ) Speeding throughout the area is an on-going problem. One Sunday afternoon speed checks were carried out on North Street Stilton. In one hour, 24 people driving over 35mph were stopped; 18 driving between 35 and 39mph were warned, and the other six were fined; one was driving at 48mph. The shameful truth is that five of the six were Stilton residents. UP THE JUNCTION PCSO Barry Chamberlain holds a 'surgery' each month at the Junction (next to Browns in Church St) from 6-7pm. The next Neighbourhood Panel meeting will be on September 2nd in Stilton Church Meeting Room at 7:30pm. 10 New Number From June 15, the non-emergency number for Cambs Police has been changed to (Was 0845) This makes it cheaper to call the Police numbers are classed as local - and for those on a free local calls tariff, will also be free! The old 0845 number will remain in service until next April. This change is in line with other forces policies. The Force Control Room Manager explained: 0345 numbers are a fairer option for callers. They are reserved for public sector use and are non-profit making. If you want to report an incident, call the new number and ask for Yaxley Police Office. Burglars a-burgling We have recently had an increase in shed / garage and house burglaries in the area, writes PCSO Barry Chamberlain, with a house burglary in Catworth between 26th & 27th May and two shed burglaries in Winwick on the 25th & 26th. Anybody with any information about either of these is asked to call ext Stilton Memorial Hall Booking Secretary: JADE SMITH 15 Woodward Close (01733) A timely occasion to repeat some sound advice about hanging onto your own worldly goods: Postcode your property Record serial numbers of bikes and valuable equipment. Lock bikes, even if they are stored in a locked outbuilding. Photograph your valuables Erect and maintain a strong fence around your property, and/or plant prickly hedging shrubs. Have gravel paths; they are noisy to walk on and burglars hate anything that might draw attention to their nefarious activities. Lock your garden gate! Keep front hedges and fences low - burglars hate being visible. Lock away your garden equipment in your shed or garage, and consider fitting a shed alarm. 7 The Winners Podium! Running To The Pub SHORT RACES, LONG DRINKS AND FORGET-ME-NOTS PETERBOROUGH GRAND PRIX For a relatively small city Peterborough has a thriving running scene, writes Duncan Jackson, with lots of clubs and plenty of local races to enter throughout the year. One of the most popular series of events is the 5k Grand Prix Series, which sees these short races taking place on a Wednesday evening, every couple of weeks throughout the summer. The races take place at a variety of venues across the Peterborough area, with the series kicking off at Ferry Meadows at the start of June. Although most of the runners are used to much longer distances, the challenge of running at near top pace for more than three miles can make these races pretty hard work. On a night that was thankfully a lot cooler than the previous evening's scorcher, more than 20 Yaxley Runners took part, with many posting good times to make a positive start to the season. RUNNING AROUND Away from the 5ks, Yaxley Runners have been out in force at a number of other races, with members competing in races in Bourne, Corby, Market Deeping and Eye. Lenny Peacock and Des Owens even made the trip to Blackpool for the town's 10k. CHARITY BEGINS AT HOLME The club also continued its charity work by inviting members of a variety of other local running clubs to a special night at the Admiral Wells pub in Holme. After enjoying a run in the nearby woods, a collection and raffle were held to raise money for the Forget-Me-Not charity, in memory of Stephanie Wilson, who died in Stephanie's mother Margaret is a longstanding member of the club. RUN TO MEET US The club meets every Monday at 6:30pm, at the Hampton Hargate Sports Facility in Beaumont Way. Runners of all standards are welcome, and a warm welcome is guaranteed. Stilton and District Twinning Association London Christmas Shop, plus: Matinee performance of the stage musical 'Mamma Mia'! Baldock fish and chips on the way back! A Saturday in November Contact: Chris Walford tel: clstilton@btinternet.com Watch for more details in SCAN! Best Free Show in Town! WATCH THE UK S TOP PILOTS COMPETE Once again, Conington Flying Club plays host to the highlight of the UK s recreational flying calendar - the Mazda British National Aerobatic Championships on the 16th-18th July. This event attracts the very best UK competition pilots, some of whom will also be contenders at international level. So if you want the best free show in town, why not take up the Club s invitation to come and watch the spectacle at close quarters? There is a limited amount of parking at the airfield, but they don t charge for admission or parking and will be delighted to welcome their neighbours. Contrary to what some might imagine, aerobatics is not about wealthy playboys clowning around in expensive boys toys. It s a difficult, demanding, physically tough sport that requires dedication, practice and complete focus. Points are not scored for dangerous, daredevil stunts, but for extreme precision in a complex sequence of difficult manoeuvres - rather like figure-skating in three dimensions. Most demanding of all is the unseen sequence, which the judges spring on pilots at the last minute, so they have no opportunity to practice it, and only a limited time to memorise it before take-off. Do just one manoeuvre out of sequence, or drift only a few yards outside the display box and they re out of contention. Let s look forward to clear skies for mid-july!
