Among the areas of the town that will receive special focus in a 15m revitalisation will be the market which will become the heart of a Market Quarter and the focal point of the town centre. The 40m development of the Arcades Shopping Centre will more than double the centre in size and will contain a new transport interchange including a brand new bus station and Metrolink terminus. The Gateway, a major 25m redevelopment, will create a new 3,000 sq m mixed-use development of apartments, office space and retail units. It offers plots to be developed by businesses which will help to diversify and expand the economy of Barrow and West Cumbria and create new employment opportunities. Also planned for the area is a multi-million pound, 400-berth marina for privately-owned boats. Plans are now well advanced for the 4.5bn Wirral Waters development. This will see the transformation of Birkenhead s derelict docks, which comprises more than 500 acres, into a world-class waterfront. This is a 30-year programme that will create tens of thousands of jobs and, as such, is the largest regeneration project in the UK. Another key strategic development is a mixed-use project for the former Horwich Locomotive works which will include approximately 1,600 new residential properties being built. Work has now begun on the 8m Community and Higher Education Centre which is a new 2,600 sq m development that will contain a state-of-the-art University Centre. This is due to open in autumn The delayed Scarbrough Development, also known as the Princess Street Development and Bridestones 2, is still under construction. The scheme involves the building of a new supermarket, public square and other retail units. A link road has also been proposed which will enable traffic to travel from the Sandbach Road to the Macclesfield Road without going through the town centre. Regeneration Liverpool, a joint venture between Sigma Inpartnership and Liverpool City Council, has signed an option agreement on the development of an area around Lime Street. Plans for significant regeneration of Macclesfield are focused on the traditional heart of the town centre around Market Place, Chestergate and Mill Street. The idea is to develop different quarters to the town, including a Historic Market Quarter and a Silk Quarter. The Council has allocated 250,000 for public realm improvements. The 80m scheme to develop the riverside Barons Quay has now been given the go-ahead. The project will include a multiscreen cinema, a major food store, a hotel, restaurants, bars, shops, a petrol station and additional free car parking.
