2 Foreword Nowhere else in the UK is undergoing transformation on the scale of Newham. With an abundance of development land, excellent transport links and a young, energetic and increasingly skilled workforce, the borough is well placed to accommodate East London s arrival as the capital s prime area for growth in the 21st century. Regeneration projects in the borough encompassing the Olympic Park in Stratford, Canning Town and Custom House and the Royal Docks are well underway, delivering and creating thousands of new homes and jobs. We work closely with development partners to ensure that the scale of regeneration taking place not only improves the borough s economy, but also benefits and transforms the life chances of our residents. With world-class transport links to the capital and beyond, Newham provides Europe s best connected development opportunities. London City Airport offers direct services to New York and most European capitals, while rail services continue to grow. Crossrail opens in 2018 with five new stations providing high speed connections to Heathrow Airport and all of Central London. We re proud to have one of the youngest and most diverse populations in the UK. In an increasingly global city, we believe this is a powerful asset that helps us to connect and communicate with communities across the globe. Many of the sites in Newham are already under development and seeking occupiers, but there remains extraordinary potential for growth across the borough. 5 Stratford East London s Metropolitan Centre Stratford is home to Queen Elizabeth OIympic Park, Westfield Stratford City Europe s largest urban shopping centre as well as the International Quarter. East London s newest neighbourhood, East Village, is also located in Stratford within the Olympic Park. A number of new schemes are also coming forward in the historic Stratford old town and along Stratford High Street, including the mixed use scheme at Strand East and the new Birkbeck-UEL campus. Looking ahead, the redevelopment of the Carpenters Estate and Stratford island sites will further strengthen Stratford s position as a key economic driver and metropolitan centre for East London.

6 The Royal Docks London s first new Enterprise Zone The Royal Docks have the capacity to attract modern sustainable businesses and deliver significant levels of economic growth for East London. With a rich industrial heritage, the Docks is already home to a number of established economic drivers including ExCel London, London City Airport, and the Crystal, Siemens 60 million urban sustainability centre. Looking ahead, Royal Albert Dock is set to receive 1bn investment by Chinese developers ABP to transform the area into an international trading hub. Alongside this, Silvertown Quays at Royal Victoria Dock will see a consortium led by Chelsfield plc transform a 50-acre site into more than 3m sq ft of mixed-use space. A new pedestrian and cycle bridge will connect this site to the new Crossrail Station at Custom House.

7 Canning Town and Custom House East London s new skyline The 3.7 billion Canning Town and Custom House regeneration programme is one of the largest projects of its kind in the country. The programme is well underway delivering thousands of new and refurbished homes across all tenures, vibrant town centres, more public open space and a greatly enhanced retail and leisure offer. There remain a number of residential and commercial investment opportunities in Canning Town and Custom House, as well as a number of public and privately owned sites still available for development.

9 World-class transport connections Newham is one of Europe s best connected centres Newham boasts world-class transport connections, with every major European city within two hours from London City Airport. When the new Crossrail line opens in 2018 Newham s five new stations will provide speedy connections to Heathrow Airport and all of Central London. Newham s Royal Docks is also home to the Emirates Air Line, Britain s first urban cable car crossing the Thames from ExCeL to the O2 Arena.

10 Breaking new ground in sustainable transport Newham has made significant strides in improving the borough s cycling and pedestrian infrastructure. This includes being one of the first London Boroughs to introduce segregated cycle ways and a variety of off-road routes. The transformation of the Lower Lea Valley will create new landscaped walking and cycling routes, and complete a brand new riverside link from the Royal Docks, through Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park to the reservoirs of the Lea Valley and beyond.

11 Digital Newham The 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games left Newham with a phenomenal technological legacy and unparalleled digital infrastructure. Combined with Tech City, the capital s leading destination for creatives, Newham presents the ideal conditions for both business investment and residential development to flourish. Developments across Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park continue to transform the area into a world-class hub of innovation and enterprise to deliver a lasting legacy from the 2012 Games.

12 Local jobs at the heart of regeneration Securing employment for local people underpins our planning and regeneration process across the borough. Workplace, the council s job brokerage service, has helped more than 20,000 local people into employment since opening in Workplace, a free service, directly supports employers to find trained local employees.

13 Global learning community With over 28,000 students from over 120 countries and an international university, Newham is bringing transformational opportunities for individuals, communities and businesses. University Square Stratford, a joint venture between the University of East London and Birkbeck, is a new education hub in the centre of Stratford. This will potentially be followed by University College London and the Victoria & Albert Museum, who are looking to create a new higher education and cultural cluster in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.

14 A place where people choose to live, work and stay Newham is a thriving borough which has the youngest and most diverse population in the UK. Over 40 per cent of its population are under 25 years old and more than 100 languages are spoken locally. Newham has established itself as a centre for culture and commerce. It is home to Westfield Stratford City, Europe s largest urban shopping centre, whilst Stratford s cultural quarter comprises of a number of the borough s most lively and atmospheric venues including Stratford Picture House, Stratford Circus and Theatre Royal Stratford. With 60 percent of the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic sports taking place in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in the north of the borough, Newham has been left with a spectacular sporting legacy. Residents have affordable access to iconic venues such as the Aquatic Centre and Velodrome.
