Page 2 Chairman s Chat Hi, Since the last Newsletter we ve had the Drive it Day Treasure Hunt & Lunch, Guest Speaker at our club night and as I write this, members will be getting ready for the Sunday Run & Lunch on the 13th May. Sunday the 22nd April was our Drive it Day Treasure Hunt & Lunch, excellently organised by Brian & Andrea. We met at the Phantom Winger to discover that the Super Car meeting had become much bigger than we had seen before. As parking was very limited, members moved to a local supermarket car park before setting off on the run. The run had a good variety of country lanes and the instructions were spot on. Although it was raining at the start the weather improved becoming much brighter with just the odd shower. The finish for the run and venue for the treasure hunt & lunch was Samlesbury Hall. The treasure hunt was all within the Hall and was a great opportunity to see some of the older and original features of the building. The top three results for the treasure hunt were as follows; 1st Dennis & Cath Read 2nd Kevin & Rosie Doran 3rd David & Ros Lees Actually Karen and I thought we had done quite well with the questions as we went through the hall. However, as you can see from the results, not well enough. It must have been the fact that we were hungry and rushed through them all too quickly. After the treasure hunt, lunch was served in a private dining room above the restaurant. On behalf of the club, thanks again to Brian & Andrea Gouldthorpe for a great day out. It was really different and was extremely well received. Entry to the hall is free, so definitely worth a visit when you get time. Check out their website for more details. At the April club night we had a guest speaker Malcolm Tranter, who spoke on the history of Leyland Motors from 1896, when two families set up a company producing steam lawn mowers and of course trucks, through to more recent times. Although I have lived only a few miles from the site for the last 30+ years I hadn t realised just how big and wide ranging the company had been.

Page 3 Chairman s Chat Website & Facebook Very little has changed on the website over the past month or so but we are hoping to make changes in the coming months, particularly in the area of better information for forth coming events and booking a place or tickets. Membership. At the end of 2017 club membership stood at 78 members, we are currently up to 64, with members that have renewed or re-joined after a break. And, a new member Peter Ratcliffe, welcome Peter. Also we have been trying to confirm members s addresses and so thank you to all those who have responded, I now only awaiting 7 or 8 responses to complete the list. Announcements / reminders. May 29 th. Club Night Auto-test & BBQ (@ the Schultz estate) June 3 rd. Sunday Club Run & Lunch June 8/11 th. Bill s Weekend Romp to Dumfries & Galloway June 24 th. Classic Car Day, Townley Park, Burnley June 26 th. Club SYCO Night (Show Your Car Off) See the club and other events calendars for later events On July 7th, it is the Lostock Hall Carnival and we have been asked again if our club will take part in the procession and carry the various Carnival Queens. If you would like to take part or want to know more about it please contact Paul Heyes. Finally for this month. If you would be interested in standing for Chairman and would like to know what that entails, or indeed a position on the committee, please speak to me or any member of the committee, we are always looking for new blood and fresh ideas. Well that's all for now, Tony

Page 4 Secrateries Scribbles Forthcoming events we previously asked members if they were interested in advance entrance tickets and thank those who responded, I still have some left for the Leighton hall and Lytham hall shows if these remain unreserved they will be sold on the day at the departure first come first served, these are about half the normal price, and do ask for payment on receipt as they have already been paid for. A club stand is reserved at the northern national but no tickets pre bought as the discount was only a few pence below the on the gate price and one or two unsold would wipe out the entire saving. The Hebden Bridge show for which we intended to get tickets was more problematic to go to as a group, (it seems to be run by an accountant) they are quite strict on vehicle age, its pre 1996 on Saturday, so no MGF/TFs and pre 1976 on Sunday so even my 40 year old MGB is too new to get in. they also wanted a completed application form for every vehicle blaming data protection regulations. In view of these requirement I didn t pursue this any further, but if you want to go individually look for Hebden Bridge Classic on google were you will find the application form, otherwise you ll need to park outside and walk onto the field. MG octagon club are holding a summer open evening at the Canberra club, bae systems. Balderstone BB2 7LF on Tuesday 10 th july from 6pm to 10:30pm all makes and models welcome and no entry fee. Bar and barbecue (barbecue till 8pm) are available, by all accounts a popular event This month s most ridiculous MGB (is that Ray eyeing it up, it s his colour)

Page 5 Corner House 6th Here are a few photo s from the second mornings meeting of the year at The Corner House. Quite a few of the club were there and although it was a bit cold, there was a good array of classic cars to look around. The next meeting is on the 3rd June 2018 You will need to be there early to get a parking space.

Page 6 A Weekend at MG Y Spring Run Every year the Y Register of the MG Car Club, meet for the annual Spring run. The weekend starts with gathering at a hotel, this year it was at in my town (Clapham) in Bedfordshire, a matter of 163miles from Chorley which took me 5 1/2 hours The members attending arrived on the Saturday afternoon ahead of the evening meal. The hotel closed off the car park, so all the Y types could park together. It rained in the afternoon and during the night. Sunday morning was a bit overcast but at least it was dry. The cars set off about 11 am to cover a route of about 40 miles, ending at the Shuttleworth aircraft collection. Over the last couple of years, as a single driver, I have followed behind a couple in their Y type, Neil & Janet Cairns. Unfortunately this year, Neil had a sad tail to tell as his Y type was involved in a collision, where a young lad was speeding up to the roundabout where Neil was going around, couldn't stop in time and tried to go round the roundabout the wrong way and collided with Niels car.

Page 7 So Neil now has to go though getting it repaired. Suspension parts are easily available, but body parts are no longer available. However by the following morning after asking for help through Facebook, he had the promise for a couple of wings, steering rack etc. Just shows what the MG family can do when someone has a problem. The car is now at Brown & Gammons MG awaiting the insurance company to ok the repairs. So Neil and Janet came in their Fiat. Still no problem with me following them. When we arrived at the Shuttleworth Collection, we were directed into our own designated car park. We could the spend as long as we liked going through the hangers looking at the exabits, or just chilling out at the café. There was also flying display s by model aircraft going on all afternoon.

Page 8 Some of the group, then travelled home whilst 3 other cars plus myself went back to the hotel for the Sunday night & we had a nice meal together before travelling home on the Monday Roy Clapham
