2 CHAIRMANS CHAT SEPTEMBER 2014 THE LANCASHIRE LANES RUN 31st AUGUST 2014 If you look closely you can see Godfrey getting wise instruction from Ray & Archie, presumably fixing the rally plaque to the front of his B! What a wonderful day At last we had good weather for the Lanes Run, and 40 odd cars were in attendance. Barton Grange and back again, some 112 miles of a super variety of Lancashire Lanes and scenery, out to the Southport coast and then east through Rivington and into the Ribble Valley. Our thanks go to Tony, Andy & Michael for their joint efforts in making this a very special day for our Club. And my personal thanks go to my mate Tony for driving me, as I remain on my medical driving ban. I quite enjoyed navigating! It is always a timely reminder when visiting Barton Grange Garden Centre in late August that Christmas is not too far away as they are already fixing their festive displays for the season, and in this respect we need to emphasise a very important date for your diaries. Saturday 6th December is the date of our Annual Awards Dinner and thus far our planning locates us once again at the Ashton & Lea Golf club, but on this occasion we will occupy the ground floor which is more suitable for our needs. Mick has re-ordered the stunning entertainment that we all enjoyed last year ( say no more ) and the full details of costs, menus & times will be included in the October newsletter. 2

3 AND - just to remind anyone who has not already heard, the awards on the evening will include the presentation of the Fowler Cup for the best judged car on SYCO night - and this will be to: RAY & LYNDA COHEN - THE WINNERS with their BGT (you will never hear the last of this) Sunday September 14th SO - mark the date in your diaries, it is only 10 weeks away THINGS TO COME Another visit to the well supported Fairhaven Classic Car Show at Lytham St Annes. We will enjoy reserved parking on the promenade and after a couple of hours or so we will drive a short way to the Chadwick Hotel for lunch. Meeting at Ribble Pilot on Preston Docks at 10.30am. Club Night September 30th Its time for the Annual Quiz Night at the Railway Tavern, and don t forget this is another Award Event. Enjoy Kevin s mind blowing questions & pictures, Bill s cunning crossword, and Andy s feely bag. This year we have received a suggestion that the feely bag may contain a Club Member and we are to guess the member s name purely by feel! Maybe next year. Any volunteers? Sunday October 12th We have a run & lunch planned for the day, details on the front page of the newsletter. Club Night October 28th Again at the Railway Tavern - we have a Murder Mystery Evening with Mick Gradwell (our previous Guest Speaker who managed the cockle pickers tragedy). This is a Murder Mystery with a difference in that we all participate in a gruesome event, a new and entertaining format. I assume that final judgements will be made on the evening and that summary convictions will be carried out at the same time, so I don t think it will be necessary to bring an overnight bag as the car park can be used for hangings etc. etc. 3

4 NOW for something I find very difficult to be enthusiastic about. It involves an article in the September Enjoying MG magazine referring to MG developments and in particular to the MG Dynamo concept car developed from the Roewe E50 - an all electric car already on sale in China. PLEASE - MG - sack the green idiot who sat at a desk and thought up this nightmare - DON T insult the Marque by badging up a doubtful milk float. We need something that will at least do a 30 mile Sunday run and lunch and get you home again! And I want to hear a Jeff Reid ROAR or at least a TA purr - not the whispering whine of a #####y golf buggy! THOSE WHO AGREE SAY AYE AND FINALLY The committee has already considered the soon coming Christmas which will be followed by the Club s AGM, and it is important at this time to consider our actions for At our recent meeting, we discussed the make up of the committee for 2015, and all members are happy to continue as serving officers of the Club, with the exception of Godfrey, who after nearly 3 years of dedicated service has decided to stand down as Secretary & Newsletter Editor. We therefore ask all members to consider this opportunity of serving on the Committee in the position of Secretary or for that matter in any other position as a serving member of the Club. It is of some importance that all nominees are established well in advance of the AGM in order to provide a continuance of the proceedings of our Club. I therefore ask that you give consideration to the matter and inform any Committee Member of your decision in this respect. Don t forget that this is open to all Members of the Club. BILL 4

5 SECRETARY S SCRIBBLES Well - some people in high places seems to have changed tack over the issue of diesel powered vehicles in the UK, after many years of promoting their advantages in fuel saving and cleaner emissions. Over 50% of vehicles in the UK are now powered by a diesel engine, and we suddenly find that emissions are not as clean as first thought. Boris Johnson, just recently, has suggested that each diesel car owner in London be given 2000 to scrap his diesel vehicle and change to petrol power. And black taxis over 15 years old should be scrapped immediately. WOW! That s a bit over the top, isn t it? And will it have an adverse effect on 2nd hand car prices if that stance continues? I would agree that the days of smelly old buses and taxis chucking out blue / black smoke in cities across the country were certainly unhealthy, but aren t those days well and truly gone? Buses, lorries and cars are much cleaner now - but, well, who am I to be able to make a proper judgement. I just don t like the thought of having to get rid of my diesel car in the future under some half thought through government scheme, to appease the whims of a few political dissenters! And - what if Scotland gets the Independence vote? How will that affect motorists? If in the future we wish to tour Scotland, its passports, probably euros or a Scottish currency, and border controls. I m a NO man, and of course Irish, and am looking for stability. Why change a very successful partnership? Ann & I are off for 10 days or so on Wednesday next to Angouleme in France, down around Cognac country on the west coast, to watch the street racing event known as the Circuit des Remparts, an event that has taken place each year since Several members of the club are going, staying at different places, and no doubt we will all meet up over the weekend of the racing. Looking forward to it. I received at short notice, details of the Canberra Club 2nd Annual Car Club Show on Sunday the 28th September. The Canberra Club has a connection with the Samlesbury Sports & Social Association at BAE Samlesbury, and the show is from 11am to 4pm, with free entry. P&D MGEC has a club stand organised, and there is a bar & BBQ available all day. At the time of writing this article, there are 60 cars already going, and I ve no doubt there will be plenty more. It is open to all makes, models & ages. Its one for your diary. And - for those that attended the Lanes Run - wasn t it a great day? The weather stayed fine all day, except for a slight spot or two, but no need for the roof to go up. That was a bumpy road across the Moss from Ainsdale - you d get up to 30 or 40mph, but quickly slow down to 15mph in places! Wouldn t like to tackle that road in winter - you d be in the ditch in no time! I had my grand daughter Ashleigh as my navigator this year, and what a fine job she did. We stopped for lunch at the White Crow in Worthington, and I was not surprised to find several other members had done the same. It s a fine place to have a meal on a Sunday. Great job, Tony, Andy & Michael! Now a few pictures of the day. GODFREY 5
