3 PREsIDENT s PODIUM Joe Kirik (248) president@eaa113.org November 2016 November will be a busy month for Chapter 113 with the return of Friday Movie Nights, our Fall Chili Fly-in and our final Young Eagles event for And we still may be able to get some good fall flying in as the mild weather extends deeper into the season. I certainly plan to, now that I m checked out in my Taylorcraft! See page 10 for John Maxfield s fall color look at a certain famous Wisconsin airport. Movie Nights are Back! This Friday, Nov. 4, marks the seasonal return of the Chapter 113 Movie Nights. This being a presidential election year, we ll fittingly kick off with Air Force One starring one of our favorite pilots and former Young Eagles Chairman Harrison Ford. The fun starts at 7:30 in the EAA 113 Aviation Center, complete with free popcorn. Young Eagles Our final Young Eagles event of the year will be this Saturday, Nov. 5. Thank you to the volunteers who have already signed up. We need to staff ground crew and classroom instructors for this one, so more volunteers are welcome and appreciated. Please plan to arrive no later than 9 a.m. for the briefing and job assignments. This is a larger group so we need your continued support in presenting both aviation classes and flights. Fall Chili Fly-In It ll be on Saturday, Nov. 12, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Please bring a pot of chili or a desert to share. The Chapter will supply hot dogs and drinks for a donation. Let s hope the good weather holds! Here are a few more easy chili recipes for you to try: Operation Good Cheer Believe it or not Operation Good Cheer is coming up fast. Debbie is already busy gift-shopping for the child our Chapter is sponsoring. Volunteers are always needed at the Pentastar hangar at Pontiac airport to sort and load the gifts. The dates this year are December 2 & 3. Please consider helping this great cause. For more information please see Debbie s article on page 20. This Month s Meeting Program Chapter 113 members fly near and far and always come back with great stories. At this month s membership meeting on Nov. 17 we ll be treated to a chronicle of a recent trip to the birthplace of aviation (see a preview inside starting on page 16). And we also may see more about Toledo Chapter 582 s Chili Fly-In at HAAR airport (see member reports & photos starting on page 5). Plus, the EAA Chapter video will feature a up-close look at the new B-Model Sonex and a preview of the upcoming EAA VMC club that s right, VMC in addition to IMC. Here s to safe & fun flying! Joe Kirik

5 HAAR CHILI FLY-IN, OCTOBER 23, 2016 By Martina & Oliver Reik The Annual Chili Fly-in at 9OH1, Elmore, OH was a great success. Several Chapter 113 members attended and everyone had a good time. HAAR Chili Fly-In Photo Courtesy of Martina Reik
6 HAAR CHILI FLY-IN, OCTOBER 23, 2016 By Randy Hebron I flew our 1955 Cessna 180 with Don Bivens down to Elmore for the Haar Chili Fly-in. When we arrived, a little late (1:30ish) they had run out of hot dogs after serving 500 of them! There were over 65 airplanes on the field, at least eight from Chapter 113 and Mettetal. There were a bunch of really great looking old cars on display. Weather was perfect. The infamous Chili Cauldron. Photo Courtesy of Randy Hebron

10 OsHKOsH in the OFF season By John Maxfield There s a sleepy little airport In the middle of Wisconsin where hardly a person is seen. Quiet two lane roads surround the countryside, which are hardly used except for the occasional bicyclist. With colorful trees about, just tall enough to be seen above the morning fog, the landscape holds an almost reverent pose. Nearby, a glass room atop its structure of steel and concrete offer views of the vacant buildings and fields below anxiously waiting the returning flock of flyers from around the world. No matter what time of year, you can always find something magical in Oshkosh. Photos Courtesy of John Maxfield

16 OCTOBER 22, 2016 FLIGHT By shunsuke shibata On Saturday, 10/22/16, from the northern part of Ohio to Appalachian Mountains were all covered with thick cloud but top was 5000 to 8000 so we filed 9500 as cruising altitude and we had blue sky and 40 to 50 knots tail wind on top. It took only 2 hours and 38 minutes to our first stop, KHWY (Warrenton). Warrenton-Fauquier County Airport Director, David Darrah is retired USMC Colonel and was Commanding Officer of MCAS Iwakuni, Japan. I enjoyed practicing my Japanese with him. Wind was 290/10 when I landed at our final destination airport FFA R/W2 but I made it!

20 OPERATION GOOD CHEER By Debbie Forsman Child and Family Services of Michigan, Inc. would like to cordially invite you to participate in their 45th year of Operation Good Cheer. At any given time over 13,000 children in Michigan are in foster care. This year they have set a goal to reach 5,800 of these children. Thousands of volunteers gather annually to participate in this event. Donor groups and individuals purchase and wrap Christmas gifts from a child s Wish List. This year, EAA 113 will again be sponsoring one of these children. Countless volunteers are needed for gift collection and sorting day on Friday, December 2, 2016 at Oakland County International Airport. Additionally, pilots with various size airplanes are needed for the spirit of Good Cheer flight of saturday, December 3, 2016 to transport gifts to local airports across Michigan. Visit under Operation Good Cheer for more details and to volunteer. This great program is an example of how aviation has a positive impact on our community and state. We hope that more EAA 113 members find the true spirit of the holidays by assisting with Operation Good Cheer to help make a child s Christmas wishes come true.
