1 Happy St. Patrick s Day! A publication of Berks County Bicycle Club Founded 1973 March 2019 Volume 46, Issue 3 The President s Spin MEMBER OF LAB, SRGA NHA, RAILS-TO-TRAILS CONSERVANCY Since I'm only hours removed from from a February club meeting held a week late due to weather-related postponement, the foremost thing on my mind for this month's ' Spin is our club's annual banquet. I've taken to passiveaggressively calling it an awards dinner instead. The word banquet evokes memories of the 1970s for me. They're dull memories of end-of-season wrestling banquets I'd swear today served the same food, and repeated the same speeches, every year. Any day now! If you attended the BCBC Awards Dinner last year, you needn't worry about eating the same food this year. Cross that excuse off the list. January and February club meetings are sparse. The officers need things to talk about. Choosing caterers and food fills the void nicely. If indecision about food or beverage had anyone on the fence, we hope the prospect of something new or different brings them over to the Dark Side. My preference for calling this event an awards dinner may also owe to the fact that we actually do give awards. We recognize members who lead men's and women's categories for club miles ridden by club rookies and club veterans, respectively. We also recognize our ride hosts, and we'll give out party favors (door prizes?), and as many raffle prizes as donations from our supporting local bike shops permit. We also give a President's Award to a member deserving of special recognition. I only know this because I went to the last year's dinner. The criteria that make one a candidate for this award are a bit freeform, but in a good way. The list of past winners reads as a Who's Who of riders among our ranks who are great ambassadors for our sport in general and our club in particular. The winner could be anyone who has impressed me with their selflessness or dedication to the club since I became president at last year's awards dinner. It could just as easily be someone who donated water, snacks, or a spare innertube to me. Maybe it will be someone who just made me laugh at the right time on a hot day. While I can't remember the last day I'd call hot, the most recent day I'd call warm was but a few days ago. It was a renegade 60-degree day that popped-up from out of nowhere. I rode outdoors at lunch for the first time in maybe a month or more. It felt like a vacation in a warmer [Continued on page 2]

It was nothing like flogging myself for six or seven days straight in the Sufferfest Tour of Sufferlandria, or yielding my spare time to plowing and salting my driveway right in the middle of the Tour. It was a therapy session that melted away the stresses and frustration of winter with each pedal stroke, for a joyful hour. It won't be long until we have two or three days of nice weather each week. Once that starts, it will quickly ramp up to five days or more. It happens each year. It's inevitable. Use whatever coping mechnism you must to stay patient until these things happen. Some riders set goals for riding farther, longer, faster or stronger. Others plan to ramp up for special events, which may challenge them with extreme distance or elevation, mixed terrain, or the thrill of pinning on a number and racing. My current plans for coping are simpler. For now I'm dreaming of the next time I jump on the bike and receive in return one of those magical days when everything goes right, when nothing else in the world matters, when your legs refuse to fatigue the kind of day that comes only once or twice in a riding season. Odds are that when such a day comes next for me, it will come in a BCBC group ride. BCBC BIKE SHOP DISCOUNTS The following bike shops offer BCBC members discounts on merchandise. 5 March 2019 Page 5 MATT S ADVENTURE RIDES April 27 CW41 4S Adventure Ride 8 a.m. start at Conrad Weiser East Elementary School 59 miles, 2962 ft. of climbing This is a new ride that will travel through the towns of Shoemakersville, Shartlesville, Strausstown, and Stouchsburg in a counterclockwise loop. The ride will start of on an uphill trend, traveling on Brownstown Rd., with a nice view of Blue Marsh Lake. It then goes up and down on our way to Shoemakersville. After passing through the town we take some different roads on the way to Shartlesville and a stop at Love s. The route leaves Love s and goes up Forge Dam Rd. to Northkill. The descent down NorthKill is all gravel. We then head towards the third town, Strausstown, cutting out the steep stuff on Bloody Spring Rd., using Shubert Rd. to get the Bethel area. This is the flat portion of the route. From Bethel the route goes on to Stouchsburg, returning to the start on the nice, wide, newly paved shoulder of Rt 422 for the majority of the last leg. Please contact me at Mtrek520@msn.com if you have questions about the route. Ready to ramble? Rides start again in just a few days What better way to put the winter blahs behind you than to head out on a long ride with good friends? Please join us for a ride and a bite to eat or refreshment after the ride. As the daylight lasts longer, so will the rides, and let s not dwell too much on when sunset arrives a little earlier each day.
6 Page 6 March 2019 These are group rides of roughly 20 miles that usually take a little less than 2 hours to complete. Many of the rides have a pre-post ride option that add an additional 10 to 20 miles. The pre-post ride options are announced each Monday by . Rides are rated 1, 2, or 3 with 3 being the hilliest and most difficult. Lunches are scheduled after some of the rides during the warmer months. Some give a lot, and we are very grateful for the sweat equity and time they put into club activities, but we also need people who can put it in less time or contribute less frequently. If you can give us a few hours of your time, please do so by contacting Wayne Beaver, wayne@slicedbread.info. Every minute counts! And please let us know as soon as possible, so we can plan events that are fun and run smoothly.
