1 GREAT PLAINS DISPATCHER The Official Newsletter of the Great Plains Transportation Museum and the Wichita Chapter National Railway Historical Society May 2009 Volume VIII Number 5 LOOKING BACK By Michael M. Bartels 40 YEARS AGO The Golden Spike Centennial Limited headed west from Kansas City to Denver May 7, 1969, behind brand-new Union Pacific Centennial No and two SDP35s. The 14-car train from New York City to Salt Lake City had Nickel Plate No. 759 as far as Kansas City. It returned from Cheyenne to Kansas City May 13th behind three E units, with 759 taking it on east the 14th. See With departure of Texas & Pacific No. 22, the Texas Eagle, on May 31, 1969, Dallas became the largest U.S. city without rail passenger service. (This was remedied in the Amtrak era and today Dallas also has light rail and commuter service.) (Trains, August 1969) A May 4, 1959 "Wichita Silhouette" in the Eagle featured Herbert J. Ottaway, operator of Joyland Hillside amusement park with his brother, Harold. He also manufactured miniature steam locomotives with his father, the late L.A. Ottaway. More than 100 were built before they sold their plant to Gerald Chance. (Today, Chance Morgan's gas/propane 1863 C.P. Huntington Train is a staple of zoo and park railways. By July had been made.) 70 YEARS AGO Kansas City Southern inaugurated a diesel-powered day train from Kansas City to Shreveport, La., May 14, 1939, with overnight connections to Houston and New Orleans. It left Kansas City at 10:15 a.m. and arrived in Shreveport at 10:25 p.m. It arrived in Kansas City northbound at 8:10 p.m. The Flying Crow left Kansas City at 9:55 p.m. and arrived back at 7:55 a.m. 80 YEARS AGO St. Louis. The first run arrived in Wichita May 5, 1924, behind No (Wichita Beacon, May 5, 7, 1929) For the first time in two years railroads reported increased passenger traffic from Wichita, up 8 percent at Union Station, 6 percent on the MoPac and slightly on the Midland Valley. (Wichita Eagle, May 5, 1929) Arkansas Valley Interurban received its new $26, ton General Electric freight motor. (#602 - Ed.) It was expected to go out on the road May 13th or 14th. It could pull 20 cars at mph. (Wichita Beacon, May 10, 1929) 50 YEARS AGO Missouri Pacific No was open for public inspection May 6, 1929, in honor of the fifth anniversary of the Sunflower, the overnight passenger train to AVI 602 in Wichita, which went to the Chicago, North Shore & Milwaukee as #457. Don Ross Collection.

3 GREAT PLAINS DISPATCHER PAGE 3 MAY 2009 THE HISTORY OF RALSTON PURINA IN WICHITA By Sam Andrews One of the longtime rail shippers in Wichita is the Ralston Purina feed mill located in the north part of town. The operation is actually older than some of the former railroads from Wichita's early years. The mill traces its roots from 1879 when a small feed milling plant opened on the Santa Fe tracks south of downtown by well known Wichita business/civic leader Otto Weiss under the name Otto Weiss Milling Company. The business continued to grow to the point it outgrew itself and a new larger & modern mill was constructed in 1906 at the corner of 13th & Santa Fe connected to the Wichita Terminal Association tracks. Much of the property was destroyed in a 1909 fire but it was all rebuilt. Mr. Weiss retired and sold his mill in 1934 to St. Louis based Ralston Purina. After exiting the milling trade, Weiss continued living in Wichita on north Topeka until passing away in Construction of a new mill took place in 1977 at 18th & Topeka. This was directly connected to a former Red Star Milling grain elevator that dated from The new mill then began receiving its rail service from the Missouri Pacific. Operations at the new site began in exactly 100 years after the Weiss Company was first organized. Upon vacating the old mill, it was purchased by Cargill, which then constructed its oilseed processing refinery on the site and began production in It is interesting to note that soon after moving to the 18th street location, Ralston suffered two minor grain dust explosions in 1980 & 1981 followed by a major explosion in January, Union Pacific turned over switching of the mill to WTA in 2005 which more or less made this full circle from first starting out on the Santa Fe, then to WTA, then to MP-UP and finally ending back with the WTA. WICHITA NRHS MEETING MINUTES APR. 17, 2009 The meeting was called to order at 735pm by Pres. David Meek. He announced that a quorum was present. A motion to approve of the application was made by Norm Walters and seconded by Randy Spillman. Motion passed.
