Riverfront Drive, c The railroads were Mankato s dominant transportation influence from the late 1860s up to the 1940s, with two lines still running today. At the end of the 19 th century, four separate rail lines ran through the city, and Mankato served as a distribution point for all of southern Minnesota. The Union Depot was constructed in 1896 by J.B. Nelson and Company. The depot is comprised of red brick and Mankato stone, with wood trim. The depot is now used as offices and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. By the end of the 1800s, four separate rail lines ran through Mankato: Minnesota Valley Railroad (later renamed the Chicago, Saint Paul, Minneapolis and Omaha line, called the Omaha Line now the Union Pacific); Chicago and North Western Line ( CNW, now the DM&E); Chicago, Milwaukee and Saint Paul; and Minneapolis-St. Louis (later purchased by Chicago Great-Western). The area immediately around the depot was used for railroad resources, but the nearby Front Street commercial district developed a strong relationship to the rail lines. Many high end hotels and fine restaurants were built for travelers convenience, and even high end department stores, such as Brett s, offered lounges where travelers could rest and conduct business while waiting for their train. In 2017, this building houses offices for insurance, financial and real estate services. 2. Steamboat Site. Before the Union Depot was constructed, this was a steamboat dock site, but no trace of that resource remains. The first excursion steamboats to take advantage of the high-waters of the summer of 1850 were the Anthony Wayne and Yankee. A levee landing in Mankato was constructed in 1852 as a permanent stop. Steamboats carried new residents as well as a variety of goods, including grain, building materials, and heating stoves. In 1897 the Henrietta was the last steamboat to make the trip to Mankato. 1

This bridge lasted until 1917, when it was replaced by the Main Street bridge, designed for both automobiles and the streetcar system.

The Main Street bridge was replaced with the Veteran s Memorial bridge due to flood control measures that were undertaken. Veteran s Memorial Bridge was built in 1985. 4.

The station operated as Standard Oil Company from at least 1927 until 1930, and operated as Hund Harrison filling station until 1964.

Riverfront Drive: From at least 1945 until 1960 a Buick automobile dealership operated at this property. In 1963, Tyrholm Lincoln Mercury automobile dealership operated there.

As of 2017, the property operates as Pins and Needles Alterations and Kato Cab. 6.

2 3. Main Street and Veteran s Memorial Bridge: Mankato s first bridge, built in 1879, was an iron truss bridge that could turn parallel to the river. This bridge was constructed of three spans of iron beams, laid over massive stone pillars, and had a swingspan allowing boats to pass underneath. This bridge lasted until 1917, when it was replaced by the Main Street bridge, designed for both automobiles and the streetcar system. When the Main Street bridge was constructed in 1917, it was designed with the center lanes as streetcar tracks, with the overhead lines strung through the ornate light poles. The Main Street bridge was replaced with the Veteran s Memorial bridge due to flood control measures that were undertaken. Veteran s Memorial Bridge was built in Standard Oil Company, 429 N. Riverfront Drive: From at least 1927 until 1964, a gasoline fueling station operated at this property. The station operated as Standard Oil Company from at least 1927 until 1930, and operated as Hund Harrison filling station until In 1965, Reddi Snack restaurant and the Typewriter Shop operated at this property. As of 2017, the property operates as the Travel Center. 5. Buick Dealership, 722 N. Riverfront Drive: From at least 1945 until 1960 a Buick automobile dealership operated at this property. In 1963, Tyrholm Lincoln Mercury automobile dealership operated there. The Greyhound Bus Company moved to this location in 1992 after operating previously at Second Street and Cherry Street for 35 years. As of 2017, the property operates as Pins and Needles Alterations and Kato Cab. 6. Former Street Railroad / Street Car Lines: The first public transportation in Mankato began in November 1885, when two prominent businessmen, William Farr and John Noe, applied for and received a franchise for the street railroad. Construction began early spring 1886 along Front Street. Four horse drawn cars operated from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Due to a growing operating deficit, the company surrendered in October 1895, pulling out the tracks and abandoning the project. In 1906, another group started the Mankato Electric Traction Company. Construction began in 1907 and service began in The original tracks were laid on two lines through the city. Former Texaco Service Station, 402 N. Second Street: From at least 1953 until 1971, Texaco Service station operated a gasoline station at this property. In 2017, this building houses Quick Mart Convenience Store. 9. Former Gasoline Fueling Station, 329 N. Second Street: From at least 1927 until 1971, a gasoline fueling station operated at this property. In 2017, this building houses Plunkettes Pest Control. 10. Milwaukee Depot (Washington Park): In 1868, the Minnesota Valley Railway Company contracted more than five hundred people to grade and lay ties and tracks from Kasota to Mankato. The main railroad line was known as the Fourth Street Route and the railroad yard occupied the Fourth Street right-of-way from Madison Avenue to Mulberry Street. A timber-framed depot was the showcase on this route. Directly north of the depot, across Washington Street, were a freight house, a four-stall brick engine house, turntable and a nearby stockyard. After the railroad vacated the area in the early 1900s to relocate along the river, the city decided to use the space as a public gathering space and dedicated the site in Clements Automobile Dealership, E. Main Street: Clements automobile dealership was founded in Clements began operating in 1913 at 118 E. Main Street selling new Buicks out of a hotel lobby while servicing automobiles in the hotel s livery stable. In 1917, Clements bought the hotel and in 1918 dropped the Buick dealership and took on Chevrolet. The Main Street location expanded in 1951 to service trucks and operate a body shop. The Children s Museum of Southern Minnesota entered a lease with the city for the 224 Lamm Street property in 2013 after the city s transit division moved their operations to the former Minnesota

4 13. Eckman Automobile Dealership, 121 E. Main Street, c. 1919: The Eckman automobile dealership operated at this location from 1920 until Eckman brothers, Carl and Walter, began operating in 1914 at 533 S. Front Street when they obtained the franchise for Dodge cars, the first year Dodge built an automobile. The first floor of the building was a display room, the second floor was used as the service department, and the third floor was used a car painting department. When operations ceased in 1945, the building was remodeled for apartments on the second floor, and the first and third floors were remodeled for offices and commercial space. 14. Union Bus Depot, 320 S. 2 nd Street: The Union Bus Depot operated at this property from 1934 until Northland Greyhound lines operated at the depot along with other businesses including a restaurant, newsstand, and the Chamber of Commerce. In 2017, this property encompasses a public parking ramp. 15. Former Greyhound Bus Depot, 429 S. 2 nd Street: Mankato Greyhound Bus Lines operated at this property from 1957 until 1992, when they moved their operations to 722 N. Riverfront Drive. In 2017, this building houses Earl Johnson Furniture. 16. Former Mass Transit Facility, 224 Lamm Street: The city of Mankato acquired this property from Blue Earth County in 1975 to house the city s public transit division. The county s garage was remodeled to serve as the maintenance and service facility and to house the city s bus fleet. In 1980, a bus wash was constructed. The Children s Museum of Southern Minnesota entered a lease with the city for the 224 Lamm Street property in 2013 after the city s transit division moved their operations to the former Minnesota Department of Transportation building at 501 S. Victory Drive. The grand opening of the Children s Museum took place in May Former Highway Patrol Barracks, 221 Lamm Street: The State of Minnesota Department of Highways operated at this property from at least 1948 until 1964 when the property was sold to the city of Mankato. Over the years, the city of Mankato used the property as a city garage, city parking meter repair shop, department of public works, department of parks and forestry. 18. Ferry Site: At first, the only way to cross the Minnesota River was via the Cummings Ferry at what is now Sibley Park. The ferry operated by a simple system of pulleys on a cable with the aid of the river current to carry passengers, wagons, and goods from Sibley Park to the north across the river. 4

19. Park Lane: The city of Mankato preserved and restored the original brick-paved Park Lane when utilities were replaced beneath the street. This is the sole remaining brick street in Mankato. 20.
