1 Appendix C Egremont Town Centre Survey Introduction In order to have an understanding of the vibrancy of the borough s towns the Council monitors the occupancy of premises within the town centre boundary of each Key Service Centre. To do this officers survey the town centres (usually every two years) to find out the types and number of businesses that are operating and also to see how many vacant premises there are. Recent surveys have taken place in March 2012, March 2013 and November It should be noted that the surveys only offer a snapshot of each town at a moment in time, but it is hoped that by repeating these surveys at regular intervals the Council will be able to identify trends and issues early. We can also monitor the effectiveness of the policy. Occupancy in Egremont November 2015 The Survey in 2015 identified shops as being the largest single use in Egremont (27 shops), followed by non-residential institutions, and business uses (8). There are also currently 16 vacant premises within the town centre, which represents more than 15% of all buildings within the town centre. A full list of all relevant premises and their current uses can be found in Appendix 1. Change in Occupancy Between 2013 and 2015 Table 1 below shows that the number of A1 Shops has fallen by three over the past two years and non-residential institutions by one, while drinking establishments, hot food takeaways and business uses have all increased. This is because in 2015 two businesses are now occupying a building which was a dwelling in 2013 and was not recorded in 2013 survey (See Map 1).

2 Table 2 below provides the details of the changes between 2013 and 2015, showing that there has been quite a lot of activity in the town with a number of businesses forming, closing or moving. 5 Emerging Trends ( ) The Graph below shows the trends over the past 3 years for each use class in Egremont. It shows that there has been a slight decline in A1 Shops over the three years, with a loss of two premises and an increase of three vacant properties. Financial and professional services have increased, while business uses have decreased. Overall though, there has not been a significant change over the past three years despite a fair amount of activity and churn.
