My dear parishioners, Today, Sunday, July 24, along with six young ladies from our parish, I depart for World Youth Day (WYD) in Poland.

John Paul II began World Youth Day and the first one took place in Rome in 1986. This WYD in Krakow, Poland is the fourteenth one. For me this will be my fourth one.

I am very happy to be leading the group from our parish and I ask for your prayers.

2 My dear parishioners, Today, Sunday, July 24, along with six young ladies from our parish, I depart for World Youth Day (WYD) in Poland. Every two or three years, the Holy Father has an international gathering of young people from around the world to celebrate our Catholic faith. St. John Paul II began World Youth Day and the first one took place in Rome in This WYD in Krakow, Poland is the fourteenth one. For me this will be my fourth one. I attended WYD in Denver, Colorado in 1993 as a seminarian, and Madrid 2011 and Rio 2013 as a priest, bringing a group for my last parish. I am very happy to be leading the group from our parish and I ask for your prayers. The young ladies who are joining me are known to us and have worked hard for the last two years in preparation and fundraising. Margarita Covarrubias works in the rectory as a receptionist, is a catechist, leads our Daughters of the King chastity program and has helped to lead our new youth group this past year. Alexa Dayoan leads our English children s choir, our young adult praise and worship band, served in drama guild productions and has served as a catechist in the past. Ashley Gleason is one of our weekend sacristans, our summer camp director, a catechist, part of the young adult praise and worship band, assists the children s choir and has been a part of the drama guild. Kerryclare Gleason has worked in the rectory as a receptionist, served as a catechist, and is our current drama guild director. Tiffany Sabal is one of our extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion and was part of our young adult praise and worship band. Claire Spinetti - is one of our extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion, a catechist and has served in drama guild productions. I ask that you pray for them that World Youth Day be a time of renewal and infusion of the Holy Spirit in their lives. My experience has been, that for the majority of those who attend, their understanding of the church is broadened, their faith is deepened, and their love for God strengthened. We will keep our parish in our prayers during our time of pilgrimage. God bless, Fr. Cada dos o tres años, el Santo Padre tiene una reunión internacional con gente joven de alrededor del mundo para celebrar la fe Católica. Santo Juan Pablo II comenzó el Día Mundial de la Juventud y el primero tomó lugar en Roma en Este WYD en Krakow, Polonia es la decimocuarta. 4 Friendly Reminders Update on church boiler In the beginning of July, we began the work for our new church boiler. Asbestos removal took place first and just this week the demolition of the old boiler (about 58 years old) happened. The new lining for the chimney is coming soon and then we will have the installation of the new boiler. This is the first project we are doing for the parish portion of Generations of Faith. Annual Walking Pilgrimage Walking Pilgrimage and retreat: From August we will participate in a 4 day walking pilgrimage from Great Meadows, NJ to Our Lady of Czestahowa Shrine in Doylestown, PA. Four days of walking, singing, camping, praising the Lord and growing closer to Him with the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal. For more information contact Father Evans at the rectory. Flower Baskets Would you like to keep our altar beautiful during the summer? How about donating a flower basket for the week? Each basket is $75 and can be donated in memory of a loved one or given in thanksgiving. Donations received by Monday of each week will have the memorial mentioned in the bulletin. Did you know? With the ever-increasing population of parishioners, the first Church had become too small; it was enlarged and remodeled in The whole front of the plainly structured old Church with its little hood or lantern for the bell had to be torn down; the builders constructed a balcony which encircled the steeple at its base allowing a beautiful view of the entire countryside. At this time, the Mission Church consisted of 800 people. The zeal of the early pastors to spread the faith inspired them to establish parishes at St. Anthony of Padua in Greenpoint, St. Ignatius, Hicksville, St. Margaret, Middle Village, and St. Raphael formerly, Blissville. The passing of time found it necessary to divide the parish once again: Our Lady of Sorrows, Corona and soon after, St. Stanislaus Kostka in Maspeth were organized. Continuous migration of settlers to the neighboring areas encouraged organization of the parishes of St. Joseph, Astoria, St. Sebastian, Woodside and St. Adalbert formerly, Newtown Heights to further provide for the spiritual welfare of the incoming faithful. These parishes attribute their foundation to the Mother Church, St. Mary s of Winfield. Sr. Mary Conroy s Food Pantry and Outreach is sponsoring a raffle for JetBlue tickets to anywhere JetBlue flies: almost 100 domestic and international destinations! Two sets of a pair of tickets (4 in total) will be raffled on Sunday, September 18th after the 12Noon Mass. Raffle chances go on sale at the rectory this weekend for $20/chance.
