LIVE THE LITURGY - INSPIRATION FOR THE WEEK/ VIVIR LA LITURGIA - INSPIRACIÓN DE LA SEMANA Love of God and love of neighbor are intimately bound together. You cannot have one without the other. Who are my neighbor and how do I love them? It is easy to confess with our lips that we love our neighbor. But how does this get translated into action? Our neighbors are not only those who live around us or are most familiar to us. Everyone is our neighbor: those who are foreign to us, those who have come here illegally, those who have hurt us, those we envy, those we take for granted, and those who are poor. Embracing humanity in all of its forms is not always an easy task, and doing so can quickly take us out of our comfort zones. Working for justice, as God desires, often means adjusting how much I can have and sacrificing our wants and desires. The very image of God is on the faces of our neighbors, and our face can be found there as well. How much do we really love them? El amor a Dios y el amor al prójimo son dos cosas que están atados íntimamente. No puede existir uno sin el otro. Quién es mi prójimo y cómo lo amo? Es fácil confesar con los labios que amamos al otro, pero cómo se demuestra esto en acción? Nuestros prójimos no son solo esas personas que están a nuestro alrededor. Todos son nuestros prójimos: los extranjeros, los que han llegado aquí sin papeles, los que nos han lastimado, los que envidiamos, los que damos por hecho y los pobres. Aceptar a la humanidad en todas sus formas no siempre es algo fácil, y hacerlo nos puede sacar de nuestro confort. Trabajar hacia la justicia, como Dios quiere, muchas veces significa ajustar cuánto se sacrifica uno y ajustar sus deseos. The purpose of the representative is to facilitate communication between our various groups and the Pastoral Council. Annual Thanksgiving Food Drive/ Colecta Anual de Acción de Gracias St. Joseph Parish is conducting a Thanksgiving Food Drive for area families needing assistance with the Thanksgiving Holiday Dinner. Some suggested items are: Potatoes, yams, stuffing, cranberry sauce, butternut squash, canned vegetables and TURKEYS. The Turkeys must be frozen. Please bring your donations to the Church Office, 37 Squire St., during regular office hours, Monday- Friday, 9:00am to 3:00pm by Friday, November 16. Thank you for your generosity. Christmas Fair/ Feria de Navidad The St. Joseph Church Women s Social Club will be holding their annual Christmas Fair on Saturday, November 10 and Sunday, November 11, 2018 in the St. Joseph School Hall. As in past years we are asking our parishioners for their help with donations of craft items, (crochet, knit, wooden items, etc.), Christmas items, white elephant (please, no clothing), basket donations, etc. Items may be dropped off at the Church office, 37 Squire St., Monday through Friday, between 9:00am and 3:00pm. If you have any questions, please call Sandy at (860) Thank you in advance for helping to make our Christmas Fair a success. All money raised is used for the needs of the Church. 5 St. Joseph School ~ New London A Holy Place Where We Discover Each Other in God s Love "Un lugar sagrado donde nos descubrimos los unos a los otros en el amor de Dios" St. Joseph School, 25 Squire Street, New London went Pink for the Cause on Friday, October 19th, as they continue in their effort and mission in being involved in their community. Students were allowed to wear pink in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.Headbands, socks, shirts, ties, sweatshirts and t- shirts were worn by both the faculty and staff for this fundraising cause. It was decided to make a donation to the Terri Brodeur Breast Cancer Foundation for the team of the Mighty Marcille Marathoners. This team is made up of Sunshine Marcille, Addie Marcille and Sophie Marcille. Mrs. Marcille has walked for the past five years and the last three has been joined by her two daughters Addie and Sophie. They have all finished the 26.2 mile walk every year. The Marcilles have been a part of St. Joseph School for the last twenty- five years. Their youngest Nolan is finishing up his 8th grade year at St. Joseph. The student body and faculty were proud to present a check in the amount of $203 to the Foundation. Please pray for them as they look to renew and grow in their faith. (MARK 12:33) Of all the gifts that God gives us the one He wants the most is our heart. He wants us to share out of love, not out of obligation. Using our talent in parish ministry and contributing money to support our parish mission is important, but it s more important to spend time in prayer with God daily and discern how He is calling us to be generous with all of our gifts. Not just the visible ones, but the invisible ones like love, mercy and forgiveness. 10 Community of St. Brendan the Navigator Italy Pilgrimmage/ P eregrinaje de Italia Twenty two pilgrims arrived in Venice Italy on September 25, a beautiful sunny day. Spending 3 days in Venice, Fr. Mark celebrated Mass at his namesake cathedral, the Basilica San Marco. Gondola rides were had by all. Onto Florence, where we visited the Uffizi Gallery to see the statue of David, some 15 feet tall,by Michelangelo. The pilgrims were in awe of paintings by Botticelli, and Caravaggio and the portrait of the Annunciation by Leonardo da Vinci. Much admired was the Duomo in Florence of Santa Maria del Fiore and its Baptistry that has a magnificent octagonal ceiling constructed between 1059 and Dante Aligheri, the Italian poet was baptized there. Dining alfresco in the outdoors was a treat, and wine and Gelato were enjoyed by all. Onto the hill town in Tuscany of San Gimignano. Some serious shopping was done along with enjoying the (now) daily dose of Gelato Leaving Tuscany, pilgrims traveled to the hill town of Assisi in central Italy s Umbria region. Birthplace of St. Francis,( ), the th Basilica of St. Francis is a multilevel church with 13 century frescoes decorating the walls and the crypt where Saint Francis is entombed. A nother beautiful hill country town. Finally, Rome Having to be seated by 7AM for the Pope s Mass at 10AM, the Synod of Bishops Mass, pilgrims were amazed at the early morning sunrise beauty of the Vatican. How spectacular to see thousands of Christians flood into Vatican square, all orderly, all in awe of the splendor of the Mass celebrated on a sunny warm autumn day. Pope Francis was within 3 feet of the pilgrims riding in his Popemobile, guarded by the colorful Swiss guards. He stopped to bless the ill and infirmed and bless the children among the crowd. A true Rock Star of the Catholic Church Topped off by a four course dinner, at a garden restaurant, with professional opera singers and pianist, the pilgrims prepared to depart Italy. The pilgrims would like to thank Fr. Mark O Donnell and Fr. Joe Sidera for celebrating Mass daily in these best of historic basilicas in Italy.
