At the convention you can spend time with fellow artists from across the U.S. (and other countries), attend workshops, see the CPSA International Exhibition in person, win raffle and door prizes, see images of every entry submitted to the exhibition, bid on small works of original art from favorite artists, enjoy a delicious banquet meal, and watch the excitement as nervous award winners find out which award they ve won culminating in the announcement of the $5,000 Best of Show / CIPPY Award! And one big advantage of holding the convention in Brea is that the gallery where our exhibition will be held is literally next door to the hotel. Talk about convenient! Each registered attendee receives a name badge and members receive a goody bag when they arrive at the CPSA Hospitality Suite. Name badges should be worn to all convention events. Payment for workshops and banquet may be made online or a check mailed with the form on page 7. All other events are free. Deadline for receiving online and mailed payments is July 15, A $20 charge per person/per paid event applies to cancellations prior to July 15, No refunds will be made after that date. 3 WEDNESDAY Meet & Greet CONVENTION WEEK Plan to arrive at the hotel in time to attend the Hospitality Suite Meet & Greet on Wednesday evening (at 6 p.m.), that kicks off the convention. This is a free event where you can ask questions, pick up your name badge, convention pocket guide, and goody bag (if you haven t already) and, most important, connect with other artists. You ll also: See overflowing tables of art supplies and other products donated by our corporate members and supporters that will be given away as raffle and door prizes on Thursday. Preview and bid on Small Works of Great Magnitude originals donated by signature and award-winning artists for Thursday s silent auction. Buy tickets to win prizes in the raffle during Thursday s Art Gala. THURSDAY August 1 Workshops Two accomplished artists Erwin Lewandowski, CPSA, CPX and Peggy Magovern will share their expertise and techniques with you in one-day workshops created just for our convention. Each workshop is repeated on Thursday and Friday so you won t have to choose just one! Workshop fee is $100. Details about the workshops are on page 5. Art Gala and Silent Auction Thursday evening we kick back and watch large screens where every work of art that was entered in the CPSA International Exhibition is shown, whether or not it was selected. During breaks we bid on the Small Works of Great Magnitude in the silent auction, listen for our ticket number to win a door prize, and hope our raffle tickets are pulled for the amazing raffle prizes donated by CPSA corporate members and other generous companies. This is a free event. Erwin Lewandowski Peggy Magovern FRIDAY August 2 Workshops Repeat Awards Banquet On Friday night enjoy a social hour with cash bar and a delicious banquet dinner, after which all award winners are called forward and wait to hear their names. 4 CONVENTION WEEK FRIDAY August 2 (continued) Awards Banquet (continued) Banquet Meal Choices Each year CPSA arranges with the hotel to offer three meal choices: beef, chicken, and vegetarian. A description for each choice will be available when you register for the banquet at the CPSA website. Banquet meals are $60 per person. Pay online when you register or mail in the form on page 7 with payment after your online registration is completed. SATURDAY August 3 Dick Blick Art Materials Trade Show On Saturday morning, CPSA Patron member Blick Art Materials will bring their local store to us with special offers on our favorite art supplies! Representatives from many of our corporate members and other great companies will be there to answer questions and demonstrate their products. This great shopping experience will be conveniently held right in the hotel. Artists Reception Saturday afternoon you ll walk just a few steps next door to the City of Brea Art Gallery, where you ll see the 27th Annual CPSA International Exhibition in person and have a chance to meet and talk with many of the artists whose work is in the show. 5 2019 WORKSHOPS The Ways of Water Erwin P. Lewandowski, CPSA, CPX Learning the intimate connections with still and moving water scenes in this workshop will greatly enhance your artwork. You will share in this artist s secret ways of illustrating quiet pools, bubbling brooks, cascading falls, and current streams. Along the way, you will also gain insight about depicting landscape rocks, foliage, subsurface imagery, and surface impressions within water settings. Erwin will share his method of dissecting the exacting luminescent qualities of light and color dancing, reflecting and refracting from the surface of both moving and still water. Using his keen sense of alignment, Erv offers a complete circle of seeing, thinking, and physically doing. The workshop will include his system for selecting and developing compositions, recognizing focal points, enhancing elements found in and around water scenes, and creating backgrounds. Live demonstrations, hands-on drawing assignments, and individual guidance will give you a better understanding of the ways of looking at and illustrating water. ABOUT ERWIN P. LEWANDOWSKI Erwin maintains a studio/residence along the shore of Lake Huron in northern Michigan. He is a graduate of the Fine Arts Department at Central Michigan University and received additional training at Eastern Michigan University. Erwin has developed a comfortable niche for his artistic skills in contemporary realism, hyperrealism [photo-realism], and the abstract in realism. Today he is recognized for his colored pencil, graphite, and pigment ink renderings of waterscapes and landscapes from across Detail of Current Swirls I, Erwin Lewandowski, CPSA, CPX North America and beyond. All of his art is unique in style, meticulously rendered in detail, and visually appealing in form, content, and composition. He is an award-winning artist on the national level with representation throughout the United States. His artwork and articles have been featured in numerous publications and other media. Portraits Where Realism Meets Imagination Peggy Magovern Discover how portraits can emerge out of the paper with dynamic, structured, and dramatic realism, using a limited number of colored pencils. Breaking down the information in facial structure will ease the process as you work step-by-step to completion. After accomplishing a strong foundation with one neutral color, you ll explore the effects of layering vibrant colors for either a subtle or more definitive variety of hues. The human face is complex, but it doesn t need to be taught that way. Once the portrait construction is underway, there will be an opportunity to create more carefree effects of color and texture with the use of wax pastels. Peggy will have already completed the same image used in the workshop, and will use photos taken of her progress as a guide for students. She will also provide written information to accompany those photos. Come join the group, and find out how portraiture can be understood, and enjoyed! ABOUT PEGGY MAGOVERN An award-winning artist, instructor, and judge, Peggy teaches ongoing classes and workshops throughout Northern California. Published cover and editorial illustrations include the Smithsonian, Newsweek, the Wall Street Journal, Sports Illustrated, and Oxford University Press. In addition to her career as a freelance commercial illustrator, she was also senior illustrator for the iconic Banana Republic catalog. Peggy received the CPSA DC 210 First Place award for Explorations in Colored Pencils and a CPSA Award for Distinction in Explore This! 13, as well as Best of Show and merit awards from Bay Area Detail of Waking Dream, Peggy Magovern galleries.
