OSYTH An Archaeological Evaluation at 35 Clacton Road, St. Osyth, Essex Brooks, H & Holloway, B Colchester : Colchester Archaeological Trust, 2009, 5pp, colour pls, figs, tabs, refs Work undertaken by: Colchester Archaeological Trust A 12m long evaluation trench revealed three post-medieval pits, a post-medieval brick and tile foundation, and a modern post hole. No archaeological evidence was recovered relating to the medieval development of St. Osyth, or to the priory complex. The excavated features appeared to derive from domestic activity associated with properties fronting onto Clacton Road. The specific objective of this work was to establish the presence of the western defensive wall of the late Roman town which, on the strength of previous discoveries in the surrounding vicinity, was judged to run beneath the cottage and the site of the proposed music room extension to the south. Substantial remains of the town wall foundation were confirmed to be present in the north-eastern end of the music room trench, comprising large flint nodules and chalk rubble within a sandy mortar

2 matrix. Stratified Roman deposits of apparent dumped material were also identified against its southwestern (interior) side. The overlying archaeological activity comprised a series of modern (Victorian) walls and surfaces, presumably belonging to an ancillary building. The test pit located to the rear of the house contained two modern services and a chalk and tile layer overlying a post-medieval buried soil which also contained one residual fragment of Roman brick. The excavation of a single trench revealed a late 18th/19th-century pit, a modern pit, two modern drains and an associated drain-hole. No remains of medieval or earlier date were identified at this location. All features cut natural sand and gravel and lay beneath disturbed topsoil and modern hardcore which became thicker towards High Street, reaching a maximum combined depth of c.1.2m. Archaeological Evaluation Ennis, T Braintree : Essex County Council Field Archaeology Unit, 2009, 22pp, figs, tabs, refs Work undertaken by: Essex County Council Field Archaeology Unit A single trench was excavated within the footprint of the proposed new building. A few sherds of residual medieval pottery were recovered, but no features to indicate that this part of Newport was developed in the medieval period. No remains of Prehistoric, Roman or Saxon date were identified. The earliest excavated feature was a cess pit dating to the post-medieval period that may have been associated with the nearby 17th century Brown House. A north-south aligned ditch may also have dated to this period. In the 19th century a flint garden wall was built upon the by now infilled ditch.

4 The land to the west of the wall was built-up and levelled while to the east there was a drop to an area of terraced garden. Subsequent landscaping had removed the wall. An evaluation of five trenches revealed two archaeological features and two natural features. The only significant feature was a shallow cut which may have been either a late medieval ditch adjacent to a post-medieval ditch (a possible plot boundary), or a post-medieval cut feature with some residual late medieval material. Medieval potsherds found in residual contexts may indicate some use of this area in the medieval period, possibly for cultivation. Two trial trenches were excavated in each of two vacant plots. In Trenches 1a and 2, a series of large, regular pits had been cut into the sand and gravel. Limited dating evidence from the pits suggested a

5 17th/18th century date and they appeared to have been associated with quarrying. The regularity and precise nature of their excavation suggested individual cart loads of gravel were being excavated. The pits were sealed by a silty deposits which resembled a subsoil but which contained non-natural materials suggested a more recent origin, possible in the 19th century. 6 Archaeological recording and post-excavation analysis was undertaken on an evaluation by Channel 4 s "Time Team" at Friars Wash. The earliest deposits encountered comprised possible buried soils recorded in Trenches 1 and 2, both of which predated the construction of the masonry structures. Although no dating evidence was recovered from either of these deposits, finds recovered from the metalled surface directly overlying the possible buried soil in Trench 1 suggested a late 1st or 2nd century AD construction date for the structure, and presumably also the surrounding ambulatory walls, with activity on the site continuing into the late 4th century AD. The ground plans of the two structures in Trench 1 identified them as a pair of Romano-British temples of quite an unusual form, the two central cellae (square buildings) being surrounded in each case by an outer ambulatory wall, with the ambulatories separated by a common dividing wall. The small, approximately square building recorded in Trench 3 could represent a third temple cellae, but its small size was more suggestive of an ancillary building. The circular structure in Trench 2 was similar in form to other known Romano-British religious buildings and may be either a temple or a shrine. The approximately square flint and chalk footing in the centre of the circular building was probably for a plinth, which, from the presence of a small slot around two of its sides, may have been clad in higher quality stone or timber. The evaluation trenching demonstrated that, although to an extent plough-damaged, the sub-surface archaeological remains were generally well-preserved. The confirmation of the ground plan and date of the temple structures first observed on an aerial photograph was significant, although only a small part of the site was investigated, and dating evidence was largely confined to post-demolition contexts. 13 This evaluation and the previous archaeological studies were intended to contribute to the EIA as part of the consultation and design process for the new forest. The study area formed open agricultural land to the north of Sandridge Village. It had been sub-divided into five areas. Of the 44 sample trenches, 17 included a total of 37 features considered to be of archaeological significance, ranging in date from the late Mesolithic to the 18th or 19th century. This number included 17 ditches or gullies, 5 pits (or possible pits) and one quarry which appeared to have extended over two ditches. The largest concentration of features and deposits occurred in Trench E8 which included foundation trenches, demolition layers and a pit with a date range spanning the mid/late Iron Age, Roman and medieval periods. Of the 50 target trenches, 18, included a total of 27 features considered to be of archaeological significance. Similarities in morphology and character between the ditches and their fills suggested that they broadly dated to the same period. Artefactual evidence suggested they were possibly Roman in date. However, the overall scarcity of pottery recovered, coupled with the levels of abrasion suggested the dating evidence should be viewed with caution. Possible Roman remains identified represented low density field-systems within what was, prior to the 20th century, an area of open farmland. Interim Report for Archaeological Mitigation of Phase 4 Extraction Area and Subsoil Bunds SS 1 and SS 2 Edmondson, G Bedford : Albion Archaeology, 2009, 32pp, colour pls, tabs, refs Work undertaken by: Albion Archaeology Archaeological investigations were undertaken in late 2009 in advance of the creation of two subsoil bunds and mineral extraction in the Phase 4 area. General truncation associated with arable cultivation had affected all three areas; with the impact being severe in the subsoil of bund 1.The Phase 4 area discovered a series of features thought to be periglacial in origin. It appeared that a number of the features survived into the prehistoric period as depressions in the ground surface, allowing Bronze Age and particularly Iron Age material to accumulate. The earliest man-made features were a series of cremation burials and pits dating to the Late Bronze Age /Early Iron Age period. Both of the subsoil bunds produced pottery vessels dating to this period. Although undated, a cluster of pits may have been contemporary. A varied collection of artefacts were recovered from the upper fills of the periglacial features, suggesting that activity in the Bronze Age / Early Iron Age was more intensive than the surviving features indicated. The continuation of a post-medieval enclosure system identified in adjacent areas, extended into the Phase 4 area, although the surviving boundaries suggested that larger land parcels predominated here. The main boundary corresponded to a land division shown on the 1838 Tithe Map. The subsoil bunds revealed a variety of features. The earliest dated activity in Subsoil bund 1 was a Bronze Age vessel placed upright on the base of a pit. Only a tiny amount of burnt bone was recovered from the fill. The rest of the area contained the truncated remains of a series of enclosures dating to the post-medieval period. It was possible that two phases of enclosure were present, indicating reorganisation of land holdings in this period. Subsoil bund 2 contained evidence for both Bronze Age and Iron Age activity. It is possible that land division commenced in the Early Iron Age, possibly associated with pitting, though the dating of the ditch was tentative. The main rectilinear enclosure system dated to the late Belgic Iron Age, with associated activity including a large pit. In the post-medieval period the area appeared to have been marginal and a series of large quarries were identified. [Au(adp)]. Archaeological Trial Trenching Turner, I Bedford : Albion Archaeology, 2009, 18pp, colour pls, figs, tabs, refs Work undertaken by: Albion Archaeology The trenches contained two human burials and a considerable depth of post-medieval stratified archaeological deposits; probably contained within a large pit or ditch. The two burials suggested either that the churchyard may have shrunk in size, or that the church had moved. The latter explanation provided support for the theory that the existing church was rebuilt in a different location to the original 10th century church. The large pit or ditch may have represented a quarry feature or the moat of de Breaute s castle. Its location in the approximate position of the moat s projected route and the dating evidence lent support to this hypothesis. 18 The site was located in what would have been the south-western corner of the medieval town, close to the likely location of its defensive ditch. No evidence of the southern town ditch was found within the single trench excavated, although this result did allow its line to be predicted with a greater degree of certainty. A recut ditch present within the trench was most likely a medieval boundary that subdivided the marshland that lay to the south of the town ditch. Several post holes and other features were also identified, although these appeared to be footings associated with much more recent, post-medieval structures. An Archaeological Evaluation [Fieldwalking & Metal Detecting Survey] Adams, M Hertford : Archaeological Solutions, 2009, 26pp, figs, tabs, refs Work undertaken by: Archaeological Solutions In September and November 2008 and March 2009 an archaeological fieldwalking and metal detector survey was conducted at two separate areas of land [Area A and Area B] at Shropham Quarry. Previous archaeological investigations to the immediate west and north-west of the site had revealed extensive evidence of Neolithic and Bronze Age activity and occupation on the hilltop, which possibly served as a ceremonial focus-point. Area B of the site was thought to have the highest potential for similarly dated remains given its proximity to the known occupation evidence. The eastern area of the site, Area A, was known to have yielded finds of a single Neolithic pottery rim sherd and a Neolithic or Bronze Age flint knife. Little was known of the site in later periods, other than that it formed part of the Corporation of Norwich land located well-beyond the northern extent of Shropham village. The fieldwalking revealed two concentrations of flint, mostly burnt but some struck. The most obvious was in the south-west corner of Area B and the other was in the northern part of Area A. The distribution of the struck flint and burnt flint was directly comparable in both areas to geophysical anomalies that possibly represented rectilinear enclosures. Therefore there was the potential for archaeological remains at these parts of the site.
