2 BIOL VESTN 36(1988)2 - DEVETAK D: Historical review Scorpionf1ies, Mecoptera, are a small insect order, containing about 500 recent species (PENNY & BYERS 1979). The data on the Slovene Mecoptera are fragmentary and scattered in individual papers. The oldest record of these animals in Slovenia originates from the SCO POLI's famous work "Entomologia carniolica" (1763), where Panorpa communis is illustrated and described. The next mention of the Slovene occurence of scorpionflies is to be found at the beginning of this century. KLAPA LEK (l900a) listed four speci es from Slovenia, and a few years later STROBL (I906) mentions the same four species from the Slovene part of Styria. After the Second World War only a few papers mention Mecoptera from these regions. Several species of the order were referred to by LAUTERBACH (1972). WILLMANN (l977a) listed a few Slovene localities for Panorpa germanica. SMERDU (1983) made the first Slovene mention of the snow scorpionfly, Boreus hyemalis, from the Julian Alps. WARD (1983) illustrated the distribution of Panorpa cognata in Slovenia on a map of the occurence of the speci es in the western Palaearctic region. Material and methods In the past 15 years scorpionf1ies have been more intensively co Ilected from the area. Over 500 fluid-preserved and dried specimens have been examined. The material is deposited in the following collections: - M. Hafner's collection (Ljubljana), - Insect collection in the Museum of Natural History of Slovenia (Ljubljana) and - D. Devetak's collection (Maribor). The animals were collected by the following entomologists (in order to save space, abbreviations of their names are used in the text): S. Brelih (SB), D. Devetak (DO), M. Ferenc (MF), M. Gogala (MG), M. Hafner (MH), F. Janžekovic (FJ), C. Krušnik (CK), T. Novak (TN), A. Podobnik (AP), 1. Sivec (IS), L. Slana (LS) and M. Štangelj (MŠ). For determination, the monographs by ESBEN-PETERSEN (1921), PENNY (1977) and SAUER & HENSLE (1977) were used. The distribution of each species in Slovenia is shown in the UTM maps and localities are listed in the UTM coordinates (for details see GOGALA et al. 1982). Slovene Mecoptera Fam. BITT ACIDAE Bittacus italicus (O.F. Miiller, 1766) Material examined: A locality: WM63: Majski vrh - Tržec, Podlehnik 6. VIII Q (LS, MŠ, TN). Distribution: Europe. A characteristic species for wooded river bank ecosystems. The species is well known in the vicinity of Slovenia - the Austrian part of Styria. STROBL (1906) noticed it there at Spielfeld/Špilje and Radkersburg/Radgona; GEPP (1978) recorded the species at Graz, Sicheldorf/Žetinci and Mureck/Cmurek. It has not been found in Spielfeld in recent times and seems to be extinct there (according to GEPP 1978). ln Yugoslavia, the species was found in Dalmatia (BRAUER1860), Slavonia (MOCSARY1899), Bosnia (ES BEN-PETERSEN1921) and Macedonia (Dojransko ezero; DEVETAK,unpublished).
