Visit one of the castles, where the children's imagination will go wild, keep the young ones busy making the family lunch or let the adrenaline loose in a true mountain adventure park. In winter, the pristine white slopes beckon you to glide down them on sledges or skis, while in summer, the crystal clear-lakes of the Slovenian Alpine region invite you to swim in their clean waters. Whatever you choose, there s no chance you ll ever get bored, energy will be well spent and beautiful memories will remain imprinted in your hearts forever. The most beautiful family trips By boat, train and cable car... or even by plane True, the journey itself can be the goal, but stunning views are mostly for grownups, while children require a bit of additional motivation. You will find a lot of it on our trips around the Slovenian Alps: climb aboard a somewhat different vehicle, spice up your excursion with a thundering waterfall or flowering daffodils, visit a place where history comes alive or embark on a journey where you might come across a chamois, a Karst valley or a sequoia. 7 Walking and cycling to sites of natural beauty VINTGAR GORGE WHAT? A gorge through which flows the magnificent emerald Radovna River with its pools, waterfalls and rapids. There is a mighty, approximately 15-metre high Šum Waterfall, the highest river waterfall in Slovenia. STARTING POINT: parking lot in front of the gorge entrance, Podhom 80, 4247 Zgornje Gorje TRAIL LENGTH: 1.6km each way You can return on the same path or through the settlement of Hom to the historical church of St Catherine, from where a magnificent view opens to the Karavanke mountain range. The trail is 2.6km long and is quite easy. DIFFICULTY: an easy path, however, the trail leads over wooden footbridges that can be slippery; caution is advised. WHEN? 8 Let's get moving! Keep pedalling! What's waiting for us at the end? STARTING POINT: gorge entrance, 1km from the village of Krnica TRAIL LENGTH: 2km each way DIFFICULTY: medium level trail WHEN? From spring to autumn in dry weather INFO: T (0) RADOVNA TRAIL Pocar homestead POKLJUKA GORGE, GORJE WHAT? A 2km-long gorge and 40 metres deep in its most picturesque part. Paths for visitors lead to the central part; the main path runs along the bottom, while the side path runs on the margins. Natural attractions: a side gorge, a spacious rock cavity, called the Pokljuka Hole, a large natural bridge 24 metres above the bottom, narrow and rounded plains, a small natural bridge. WHERE? Above the valley of the Radovna River WHAT? The trail leads through the Triglav National Park along the Valley of the Radovna River, from the village of Krnica near the settlement of Zgornje Gorje and past the Napoleon stone to the Pocar homestead in the settlement of Zgornja Radovna. 9 Savica Waterfall WHEN? From spring to autumn INFO: T (0) MOSTNICA CANYON AND VOJE VALLEY Stone elephant SAVICA WATERFALL WHAT? The most famous and visited Slovenian waterfall, 78 metres high with a smaller 25-metre-long segmented section. WHERE? Settlement of Ukanc by Lake Bohinj STARTING POINT: parking lot by the mountain huts Koča pri Savici and Dom Savica TRAIL LENGTH: minutes each way DIFFICULTY: medium level difficulty trail on stone steps WHAT? Trip through the Mojstnica Canyon and beyond crossing meadows, past dwellings and hay sheds through the picturesque Voje Valley. By bicycle, access is possible on the road to the Slap Snack Bar, from where you can hike to the Voje Waterfall (approx. 10 min.). STARTING POINT: parking lot in the settlement of Stara Fužina TRAIL LENGTH: 5.9km each way DIFFICULTY: easy trail, 200m difference in height WHEN? 10 Peričnik Waterfall 3km away. It is only a 5-minute walk from the Lower to the Upper Peričnik Waterfall. DIFFICULTY: easy marked trail from the village of Mojstrana. A short, fairly steep path (demanding marked path) leads to the Upper Peričnik Waterfall. WHEN? All year round; winter equipment is recommended in winter INFO: T (0) FROM PLANICA TO TAMAR PERIČNIK WATERFALL WHAT? One of the most famous Slovenian waterfalls, consisting of a lower waterfall, 52 metres high and around which you can walk, and the 16-metre high upper waterfall. You can also view Peričnik Waterfall on a hike along the Triglavska Bistrica Trail. This 10-kilometre trail leads from the entrance to the Vrata Valley to the end of the valley under the Triglav wall and connects the most interesting parts of the forest and other sights. STARTING POINT: 4281 Mojstrana TRAIL LENGTH: you can reach the starting point by car. Access is also possible from the village of Mojstrana, on a wellkept footpath along the left bank of the Triglavska Bistrica River. From there the mountain hut Koča pri Peričniku is only WHAT? Walk on a marked trail from the Planica Valley to the Tamar glacial valley. A slowly rising path leads through forests and panoramic meadows with a magnificent view of the high surrounding mountains. STARTING POINT: parking lot by the ski flying ramps in Planica TRAIL LENGTH: 5km each way DIFFICULTY: easy, slightly ascending marked trail WHEN? Zelenci are the natural springs of the Sava Dolinka River. The small green lake is a nature reserve and habitat of interesting animals and rare flora. The lake has a constant temperature of 5 6 C. WHERE? Between the settlements of Podkoren and Rateče STARTING POINT: parking lot by the main Jesenice Rateče road, near the Zelenci diner WHAT? 12 Dovžan Gorge DIFFICULTY: a less demanding panoramic trail, apart from the turning at the viewpoint, where you can take the easier variant WHEN? The picturesque gorge, through which runs the Tržiška Bistrica River, is a unique site to find remnants of petrified flora and fauna. As well as a walk through the gorge, you can visit the collection of rocks in the Exhibition and Educational Centre in the village of Dolina and the printing works of the Kokrški odred commando. WHERE? The gorge lies 2.5km north of the town of Tržič, by the Tržič Jelendol road STARTING POINT: parking lot right next to the settlement of Čadovlje TRAIL LENGTH: short circular 2.5kmlong trail, longer circular 4.5km-long trail WHAT? Viewing of blooming daffodils in the settlements of Planina pod Gorico and Javorniški Rovt WHERE? Near the town of Jesenice STARTING POINT: the settlements of Planina pod Golico and Javorniški Rovt are accessible by car, from where you can climb the nearby summits of the Karavanke mountain range. 13 Brdo Park WALK THROUGH THE BRDO PARK GEOCACHING WHAT? A magnificent, well-kept park with small lakes, rich flora and fauna and many attractions, such as Brdo Castle, the former castle farm, the old orangery, a precious collection of statues, an apiary with beehive panels and straw-covered hayracks. A themed path, on which you will discover three castles of Škofja Loka. The path begins at Škofja Loka Castle and continues to the ruins of the Upper Tower on Mount Krancelj. From there, you can take a pleasant forest path toward the sheltering foothills of Mount Lubnik and WHAT? Themed trail along the Rupnik Line, a defensive line with fortifications and bunkers built between the two world wars for protection against Italian attacks. The trail is educational, panoramic and equipped with information boards. 15 Lake Črnava THEMED PATH BETWEEN THE CASTLES OF PREDDVOR GALLERIES UNDER THE OLD TOWN OF KRANJ WHAT? Themed path connecting four castles in the town of Preddvor: Turn Castle, the home of the first Slovene female writer and poet Josipina Turnograjska, Preddvor Castle, Hrib Castle and the ruins of the Pusti Castle STARTING POINT: TIC Preddvor, Dvorski trg 3, 4205 Preddvor TRAIL LENGTH: 6km (circular path) DIFFICULTY: easy trail WHEN? 16 LAMBERG PATH Lipnica Castle WHAT? Marked path, named after a noble family, leads to the archaeological sites in the area of the village of Begunje, past the Katzenstein Mansion and to the Kamen Castle. STARTING POINT: parking lot opposite the Pri Jožovcu Inn TRAIL LENGTH: 7.7km (circular path) DIFFICULTY: easy footpath, 160m difference in height WHEN? A round trip from the town of Radovljica, past blooming meadows and fields to the ruins of the Lipnica Castle, with information signs about the cultural and natural heritage of the Lipnica Valley. Forest educational trail, presenting 29 exotic trees, mainly from North America; the ash tree lane and the giant sequoias are especially interesting. 20 BLED CASTLE Castles and strongholds The castles of the Slovenian Alps are talkative witnesses to the past, letting the children's imagination run wild. You will feel the spirit of days long gone in an old printing works, a historic forge and next to well-preserved furniture, and you will be accompanied by stories of a famous tournament hero or an evil queen. Your brave little knights and pretty princesses won't want to miss that! WHEN? Castles can be visited all year round. WHAT? The oldest castle in Slovenia according to written records, first mentioned in writing in 1011; castle printing works, castle forge, cellar, museum, chapel, numerous events INTERESTING FACT: Bled Castle is connected to the Legend of the widow Poliksena who is responsible for the Lake Bled wishing bell. 21 STRMOL CASTLE KAMEN CASTLE WHAT? The ruins of the Kamen Castle with the preserved Roman tower, which can be climbed; there is a footpath through the castle premises INTERESTING FACT: Kamen Castle is also renowned for its famous knight Gašper Lambergar, who was victorious in numerous tournaments. 22 Kranj KHISLSTEIN CASTLE Museums and old homesteads Engage the brains of your curious little ones and open the windows of their minds to the worlds of alpine herdsmen, ironsmiths, leather dealers and shoemakers in museums or help them get to know daily life on the farms in the Slovenian Alps. Museum collections, old household items, farming tools and black kitchens will make sure that the unimaginable becomes tangible. WHAT? The Gorgeous Gorenjska permanent exhibition at Khislstein Castle, which used to be part of the town's defensive wall. WHERE? 4000 Kranj INFO: T (0) WHEN? The Slovenian Alpine Museum in Mojstrana hosts a rich collection of items and photographs, which are testimony to the importance of the mountaineering activity in Slovenia and which showcase the beauty of the alpine world. A museum dedicated to the iron industry, displaying the extraction of iron ore, transport, melting and processing of iron and manufacture of iron products; wood department; a blast furnace, i.e. furnace for melting the iron ore, is on display on the square in front of the museum. 27 Caricature Festival, Visoko ŽIRI MUSEUM CULTURE CENTRE OF THE ŠUBIC PAINTERS WHAT? The birth house of painters Jurij and Janez Šubic; presentation of the works of the painters and carvers of the famous Šubic family, demonstration of the creative processes, carvings, paintings, frescos, graphics; creating in art studios, art workshops for children and adults.
