Cancellation Policy: In the event of the participant cancelling her registration up to three weeks prior to the event, 75% will be returned to the applicant. No refund will be made if cancellation is received within three weeks (21 days) of the event date, except upon extenuating circumstances; documentation may be required. 3 HODGEPODGE: OUTDOOR SKILLS 2018 Deer Valley Meadows (Alix) Alberta 5:30 pm September 21-1:00 pm September 23, 2018 Session Descriptions 1. OAL A - RC Camp Planning & TC Plan & Pack: Program planning, themes, activities, kit lists, and resources will all be covered in this session. May be taken as a stand-alone session, or take A, B, D and F for the Green training pin, and/or take A, B, C, and E for the Yellow enrichment pin. 2. Compass 2 - experienced: For those quite comfortable with a compass, use your teamwork skills to find the treasure and complete the challenge. Wild By Nature (WBN) facilitates. 3. Archery 2 experienced: This session is for those who have prior archery experience, not for the beginner. Learn advanced skills and games to keep the girls growing in their archery expertise. 4. Compass 1 - beginner: Learn the 16 points, how to take a bearing, how to follow a simple path and how to teach these skills to your Unit. 5. Plant Identification: Learn how to distinguish between different plants, and practice identifying local flora, especially the edible and dangerous ones. 6. Leatherworking: ($10 extra, bring cash to check-in) Explore the basics of leather craft by creating a personalized book-mark. Learn how to treat and stamp pre-cut leather. Explore options for decorating, including colouring and protective coatings and stains. 7. OAL B - RC Food & Nutrition & TC Kitchens & Cooking: Planning a menu (including quantities), kitchen tasks and chores, and dietary needs will be covered in this informative session. May be taken as a stand-alone session, or take A, B, D and F for the Green training pin, and/or take A, B, C, and E for the Yellow enrichment pin. 8. Fire by Friction: Learn how to start a fire using the bow and drill technique (wood on wood). Wild By Nature (WBN) facilitates. 9. Geocaching 101 Intro to Treasure Hunting for Techies: Introduction to geocaching. Learn how it all began and what you need to get started. How are geocaches rated, i.e. size, terrain and difficulty? How do you record your finds? Get hands-on instructions on how to use a GPS unit, then participate in the world s largest treasure hunt. Come use one of our GPS units and try geocaching! 10. Art in the Park: Explore the textures, sounds, scents and colours in the woods and use these as inspiration for your art. Tools used include charcoal, twigs, paint, and more. 11. Dutch Ovens: For those looking to develop their skills with this method, including recipes, briquet choice, and cookware selection. 12. Hiking Sticks: ($10 extra, bring cash to check-in) Create a personalized walking stick from a pre-cut dowel. Learn how to use a pyrographer, or wood burning pen, to burn designs into the wood. Use sharpies and wood stain to seal in your work, and finish with a sturdy rubber foot to increase the longevity of the piece.

4 13. OAL C - TC Activities & Program: Explore the variety of ways to plan, schedule and carry out program and girls activity ideas. May be taken as a stand-alone session, or take A, B, C, and E for the Yellow enrichment pin. 14. Willow Sauna Part A: Construct a sauna from willow branches while learning wildcraft from our favourite guests, Wild By Nature. Must register for both A & B sessions. 15. Archery 1 beginner: Rules, etiquette, how to approach the line, equipment, safe ways to use the equipment, range commands, hands on with the equipment and casting practice is all included in this session. 16. Outdoor Cooking Methods: Learn about a variety of outdoor cooking methods, and make a snack while you re at it. 17. Playing with Fire: Play a challenging game that teaches participants how to light a match, strike flint & steel, and handle fire safely. 18. Sewing for Camp: ($10 extra, bring cash to check-in) Learn how to use a machine and hand stitching to make 2 projects that will be useful at camp. 19. OAL D - RC Leadership: Learn about the different kinds of leadership and how they are all utilized at camp. May be taken as a stand-alone session, or take A, B, D and F for the Green training pin. 20. Willow Sauna Part B: Spend some time at the spa...the nature spa that you built in the previous session. Wild By Nature (WBN) facilitates. Must register for both A & B sessions. 21. Geocaching 201 More Geocaching Fun: What kinds of geocaches can you look for or hide yourselves? Come see samples of various kinds of caches, including novelty caches. What should you look for in a GPS unit, or what geocaching apps are available? What makes a good log once you ve found a cache? 22. Camp Prep for Guides & Pathfinders: preparing and packing for camp, as well as prepping your Guides and Pathfinders. 23. Food Safe: Learn the principles of sanitation as it relates to Girl Guide events and camps, possibly with certification. 24. Desserts for Dietary Needs: A look at ways to adapt recipes & menus for allergies, religious customs, and medical conditions (with a snack): 25. OAL E - TC Tents & Tarps: Learn how to put up and take down tents, how to care for them and how to live in them. Tarps are versatile and essential to a camp. Learn the many uses for a tarp. May be taken as a stand-alone session, or take A, B, C, and E for the Yellow enrichment pin. 26. Wilderness First Aid: Hands-on scenarios that explore the actions we might need to take in different first aid situations. Wild By Nature (WBN) facilitates. 27. Campfire Planning: Learn about the campfire tradition in GGC and how to plan an awesome campfire for your Unit. 28. Camp Prep for Sparks & Brownies: Preparing and packing for camp, as well as prepping your Sparks & Brownies. 29. Nature with G&P: Learn more great activities that will show the girls how to connect with nature and have fun at the same time. 30. Emergency Shelters: Explore different shelter options, while learning about site selection, energy conservation, and clothing layering. 31. OAL F - RC Camp Life: Times to explore and deepen friendships are essential elements are camping. May be taken as a stand-alone session, or take A, B, D and F for the Green training pin.

5 32. Yoga for Hikers: Learn specific stretches and poses to help prevent, mitigate and alleviate pain when hiking. 33. Magic of Campfires: Introduction to making your campfire fun, special and memorable both indoors and outdoors. Pyrotechnics and ways to light an outdoor fire will be included. 34. Knots: Learn basic knots and get a leg up on your competition for the gadget team challenge 35. Introduction to Adventure Camping: If your Unit is ready for backcountry adventures, this is the session for you. Learn about the experience, qualifications and paperwork associated with these activities. 36. Nature with Sparks & Brownies: Learn some great activities that will show the girls how to connect with nature while having fun. Sessions for everyone Friday Evening- Orienteering course, crafts, knot practice, displays, pub quiz Saturday Evening- Free time (archery, Duke of Edinburgh awards info, outdoor games, frisbee, orienteering, card/board games), campfire, night geocaching Sunday Morning- Safe Guide updates, Girls First session, brunch, Gadget Team Challenge
