1 Education Programs Moose Mountain Provincial Park 2018 Programs Bring your class to our outdoor classroom! Guided school programs are offered in the spring at Moose Mountain Provincial Park. Booking: Park Quick Facts: Located 20 minutes (25 km) N of Carlyle on Hwy 9 or 40 minutes (59km) S of Whitewood on Hwy 9. Scenic hiking trails. Picnic area with fire barbeques and green space for playing games. Large beach with beach change house at Kenosee Lake and canoeing at Little Kenosee Lake. Accepted year-round on a first come first served basis. Complete the attached booking form or phone (306) April to August (306) Sept - March In the Area: Cost: Cannington Manor Provincial Historic Park just minutes away. Programs for both parks can be booked together. $1/student per program, park entry is FREE. No charge for teachers and chaperones. Close proximity to mini-golf, 18 hole golf course, waterslides and horseback riding. Visitor Center tells the story of the Aspen forest of the Moose Mountain Uplands surrounded by prairies. Group campsites. Program Dates: Monday to Friday, mid-may to June 29. Additional program dates and times may be accommodated. Beach store with ice cream!
2 Programs Snails, Pails and Cattails Gr K 3 (45 minutes to 1 hour) Discover underwater life in the lake by catching critters and taking a close-up look at the creepy, cool and sometimes slimy water bugs. Rubber boots required, spare socks recommended. Wetland Adventures Gr 4-7 (1 hour) Discover the diversity of life in the lake. Complete a hands-on study of aquatic organisms and shoreline plants to better understand the inter-relationships that exist within the lake ecosystem. Rubber boots required. Curriculum Connections: Snails, Pails and Cattails, Wetland Adventures K LTK.1, NSK.1 Grade 1 LT1.1, LT1.2, DS1.2, SE1.1, SE1.2 Grade 2 AN2.1, AW2.1, AW2.2 Grade 3 PL3.2 Grade 4 HC4.1, HC4.2, HC4.3 Grade 5 RW5.1 Grade 6 DL6.1, DL6.3, DL6.4 Grade 7 IE7.2 Natural Neighbors Gr K 3 (1 hour) During this short hike full of games and activities, students learn how animals use their 5 senses to adapt to the environment around them. Students will learn about the habitat requirements of animals in Moose Mountain Provincial Park; food, water, shelter and space. They will also come to understand their role in habitat protection. Curriculum Connections: Natural Neighbors K LTK.1, NSK.1 Grade 1 LT1.1, LT1.2, DS1.2, DR1.3 Grade 2 AN2.1, AN2.3 Grade 3 PL3.2 Forest Ecologist for a Day Gr 4 6 (1 hour) Students will be introduced to the unique forest ecosystem of the Moose Mountains. This interactive hike contains many engaging activities and games that will help students learn about tree identification, the food web of the forest and the diversity of vegetation and wildlife in the interconnected forest ecosystem. Guided Hike Gr 7 12 (1 hour) Let our program staff introduce your students to one of our beautiful core area trails. Students will learn about the unique flora and fauna of the Moose Mountain Uplands and why we call this the Island Forest. Curriculum Connections: Forest Ecologist for a Day and Guided Hike Grade 4 HC4.2, HC4.3 Grade 5 RW5.1 Grade 6 DL6.1, DL6.4 Grade 7 IE7.2 Grade 8 USC8.6
3 Moving Through the Seasons Gr 4 8 (1 hour) This interactive program uses games and activities to transport students back in time. It introduces them to the languages, lunar calendars, food gathering practices, social activities, oral traditions/legends, gender roles, Treaty Rights and trade relationships of the three First Nations groups who first inhabited the Moose Mountains. Activities centre on the Chalet lawn and follow the cycle of the 4 seasons. Curriculum Connections: Moving Through the Seasons Grade 4 HC4.1, HC4.2, HC4.3 Grade 5 IN5.1 Grade 6 DL6.1, DL6.4 Grade 7 IE7.1 Grade 8 IN8.1 Evening Embers Gr 6 12 (1 hour) A campfire program for those of you that plan to stay overnight in one of our great group camping areas. The program introduces students to the basics of campfire building and wilderness survival. Students always enjoy the fire building group challenge! This program is offered from 7-8pm at your campsite. Geocaching Gr 5 12 (1 hour) Students learn to navigate using Global Positioning System (GSP) to find hidden caches. This program is a basic introduction to geo-caching. Caches are set out in a close area that will challenge the students and ensure their safety. This program contains a lot of walking so please come prepared with proper footwear. Orienteering Gr 4 8 (1 hour) This program is to introduce basic compass use and course skill. The interpreters will set up a course ahead of time and the students will be challenged to complete it, once they have been instructed on the use of the compass. Canoe-See Gr 7 12 (1 1/2 hours) Learn basic canoe skills while exploring Little Kenosee Lake during this hr paddle. Best suited for grades All program leaders are certified with Paddle Canada. Canoes, paddles and PFD s are supplied. The program is limited to paddlers due to equipment availability. Curriculum Connections: Evening Embers, Geocaching and Orienteering. Grade 4 PE4.11 Grade 5 PE5.7 Grade 6 PE6.10 Grade 7 PE7.6, PE7.9 Grade 8 PE8.8 Grade 9 PE9.5, PE9.7 Wellness 10 W3 Physical Education 20, 30 Aquatics, Outdoors Pursuits
4 Know Before You Go Be Prepared for the Weather: Bring sunscreen, insect repellent, warm and water proof clothing. Take note, if rubber boots are required for your program. Teachers and Chaperones: Are required to participate in all programs. Cell Coverage: There is good cell service at Moose Mountain Provincial Park Booking Information Cancellations: Program Times: Programs are not usually cancelled due to weather unless requested by the school or in extreme/unsafe situations. To be discussed during the booking. Usual start times are 9:00 am and 10:45 am with a second program beginning at 1:30 p.m. and 3:15 pm. Group Size: Campfires: Are allowed in the park. Please bring matches, paper, roasting sticks and axe. Wood is provided free of charge. Please discuss campfire needs during your booking. In the case of a fire ban, campfires are prohibited. Each program can accommodate students. For larger groups, contact the Park Program Coordinator to discuss program options. Payment: Running Water: Cash or cheque payment is accepted. Payment is due on the day of the program. A receipt will be issued. We cannot invoice for services at a later date. May not be available at your program location. Plan ahead and bring bottled water and hand sanitizer. Group Camping: Safety: In case of medical or other emergencies, all groups must maintain their own transportation while visiting the park. In the Classroom: Discuss with students ways that they can reduce their impact reduce packaging on food items, recycle materials and respect the natural environment during your visit. Further Information: Learn more about Moose Mountain Provincial Park at Group sites are available by contacting the park, (306) Cost is $12 non-refundable reservation fee, plus $1/person per night. This special rate only applies to school and youth groups during May/June and September/October.
