10 Tennis Camp 6 to 12 HIT THE COURTS THIS SUMMER! Our 2018 tennis camps are powered by the Lavner Tennis Academy, a first class tennis academy based out of Philadelphia s Main Line suburbs. Tennis camp offers instruction for students of all ability levels, ages 6 to 12. In past summers, the camp hosted players from the Philadelphia Metro area, Reading, Allentown, the Pocono area, Delaware, New Jersey, New York, Maryland, Michigan, Florida, Switzerland, France, Germany, Russia, Korea, and China. At camp, highly skilled tennis pros use the Lavner curriculum to teach proper swing fundamentals, footwork, and stances for each shot, in addition to constructing point play with strategy and tailoring it to specific opponents. The Lavner teaching methods have a strong history of proven success with professionally ranked tennis players on the ATP and WTA Tours, internationally, nationally, and sectionally ranked junior tournament players, and with players aspiring to succeed at the middle school and high school levels. For our many campers who do not play competitively but love to play the game, or just want to learn, our curriculum uses a stepby-step approach that gives our players the proper foundation to learn tennis, succeed, and continue with confidence in the sport. Tennis campers work hard, play hard, make friends, and have lots of fun! Private tennis lessons are available before and after camp to supplement play at camp. Our 2018 tennis camps will also feature a focus on speed and agility, understanding high percentage tennis, the value of the split step, consistency and ball control, and simplifying the mental side of tennis for maximum success! Level 2 is for campers who are at the intermediate level (Appx. 3-6 previous camp weeks): These campers use LEGO MINDSTORMS EV3 to build, program, and control robots like the, SPIK3R, EV3RSTORM, and GRIPP3R. A selection of bonus robots include the COLOR SORTER, MINDCUB3R, BANNER PRINT3R, BOBB3E, DINOR3X, ELECTRIC GUITAR, EV3D4, EV3GAME, EV3MEG, KRAZ3, Mr. B3AM, RAC3TRUCK, ROBODOZ3R, WACK3M, and more! Campers can also partially or fully invent their own design, build and program a robot without instructions to complete certain tasks. These robots may include using multiple bricks, additional pieces, and come with even tougher challenges. Level 2 campers learn to think like an engineer by building robots with more challenging instructions and steps, mastering difficult challenges, and creating robots without instructions that are totally their own design! Level 2 campers explore concepts in sustainability and efficiency regarding the functionality of their robots, and also how robots can change the world by making daily tasks easier, and by making large, global contributions in a variety of industries. Level 3 is for campers who have at least six weeks of Robotics Camp experience, or at least 150 hours of robotics. These campers use LEGO MINDSTORMS EV3 to build, program, and control robots of their own creation. These robots must perform tasks that are for practical use, either effective as is or a representative scaled down model for a robot that would be much larger in real life. Campers are asked to identify societies needs and what type of robots can fulfill these needs, and implement their own designs and concepts. Some examples may include: A Recycling Robot, A Cleaning Robot, A Robotic Pet, A Self Driving Car, A Paper Shredder, A Game-Playing Robot, A Personal Assistant, A Robot that can draw, and of course the super cool Candy Machine (taking real coins and dispensing candy!). Level 3 campers may also explore the financial undertaking of building these types of Robots in life size and determine the cost benefit analysis of bringing their creation into real life. Campers at all levels participate in a camp tournament called ROBOWARS. This all camp tournament takes place on the Friday of each week. Groups creatively build robots that battle head-to-head in a tournament setting through a variety of matches and challenges. For many campers, ROBOWARS is the highlight of their entire summer! In ROBOWARS, robots are either pre-programmed, or controlled by Tablet, or computer via USB, or Bluetooth. Please Note: AM only and PM only campers may only build/program 1-2 robots per week due to the time constraints of only attending a half day session. AM only campers may not participate in ROBOWARS which is scheduled for the PM session on Friday (however, our staff may be able to schedule an AM ROBOWARS event as well if time allows and campers are ready). 22 3D Printing Camp with 3D Modeling 7 to 12 CHANGE THE WORLD! Join us on the FOREFRONT of one of technology s fastest growing trends 3D Printing, Modeling & Modding! With a technology that allows us to create and print prototypes wherever a 3D Printer can be plugged in, this industry is already changing the world we live in, and will have a huge impact in the future! We are beginning to see amazing new developments in the medical field (prosthetics), car industry (designing/printing cars and parts), aerospace technology, and the purchasing/printing of products for use in the home, just to name a few... Using Autodesk 123D Design and cutting-edge 3D printers, our campers have the opportunity to 3D model prototypes, mod existing designs, and print them in 3D! At 3D Printing Camp, campers learn about scalability, and how designs can be easily uploaded and printed for mass consumption. With this in mind, we ask campers to design two main projects and one additional, smaller project. Some Examples Include: A Model Car: The Auto Industry is huge, and they are now beginning their exploration into 3D Modeling & Printing Automobiles! Here s your chance to 3D model your own car design, and print it in 3D! A Favorite Tool/Resource Item from Minecraft : To practice your design skills, and celebrate your love for Minecraft, you can now 3D Model and print your favorite object/resource, or create a totally new one that does not exist in Minecraft but should! A Free Choice Object for Astronauts to Print in Space: The Space Industry is experimenting with 3D Printers that can print in spaceships at zero gravity. Just think we can 3D model objects on Earth and beam them up to space for consumption. This is much more convenient than packing everything at once, and is super helpful if the astronauts forget something - important tools, toiletry items, and/or gadgets. This can also help accelerate the building of parts for the International Space Station. At camp, you can be a rocket scientist... what would you 3D Model and send them? Campers can also transform models made out of clay to 3D printed versions using our panoramic photo-technology and 3D Printing software! This option is available when developing your object from Minecraft or for Space. Campers also learn about the 3D Printer itself, and how to operate, clean, and care for the machine. A Friday Showcase will take place around 2:45pm and campers will present their projects to the camp. Parents are welcome to attend! Valuable Learning Opportunities: 1. Much More Than Just Printing We are not just printing objects we are conceptualizing, designing, customizing, modding, and optimizing! 2. Once campers learn the basics, they can t wait to master the next trick! Magic Camp offers exciting tricks for children of all levels, where skill sets are taught according to age and experience level. Beginners learn to master tricks like: amazing card tricks, ropes passing through solid objects, transported water, mysteriously changing oil to water, illusions with cups and balls, rubber band transformations, and more! Returning or advanced campers learn tricks such as: producing objects out of thin air, amazing rope escapes in full view of the audience, Houdini s Impossible Escape, lots of more challenging card tricks with amazing revelations, levitation, and much more! All campers learn how to adapt and perform tricks with their own personal style. Campers prepare the entire week for the Friday afternoon Magic Show where friends and family are invited to be amazed the show begins around 3:00pm! 40 Creative Writing Camp 10 to 12 NEW CURRICULUM FOR 2018! Set in the format of a writing workshop, campers will have the entire week to focus on developing and writing their own fictional short stories. Before writing, campers will have the opportunity to read and discuss popular short stories, and share inspirational topics and story ideas with the group. So what should YOU write about? To avoid writer s block, we will have lots of story prompts (ideas) for you to work with, or which can serve to inspire you to create your own ideas. You can also come to camp with ideas already in mind. General Information $449/full week $419/full week if registered by 3/1/18! (11:30am to 1:00pm): Lunch may be purchased on lavnercamps.com during online registration. Lunches are catered by local area restaurants. Campers may also pack a lunch. Once campers have their short story ideas, pre-writing will continue by researching the topic, outlining the story, setting the scenes in detail, and developing characters. Campers move at their own pace through this process, and once ready, will develop a rough draft. Scheduled workshops are held at camp each day for readings and constructive feedback/suggestions, and the instructor is available to guide and workshop with campers all week. After lots of writing, workshopping, and revising, campers will have a short story piece that they can be proud of (and even continue to work on at home!) Locations Dates July 9th to July 13th July 16th to July 20th June 11th to June 15th Spanish Camp 9 to 12 Locations Do YOU want to immerse yourself in a new language and culture? Dates July 2nd to July 6th *No Camp on July 4th July 2nd to July 6th *No Camp on July 4th Through years of research and studies, experts have concluded that learning a foreign language has many benefits for children, such as increased verbal development, better problemsolving and math skills, greater self-confidence and personal fulfillment, clearer spatial relations, better communication skills, heightened creativity, and enhanced memory. 41 Developing Our Next Generation of Leaders! 13 to 15 About the CIT Program Our Counselor-in-Training (CIT) Leadership Program is for energetic and motivated teenagers (ages 13 to 15) interested in learning and developing leadership skills working with children in a camp setting. This program is designed so that CITs develop leadership skills through direct supervision, regular conferences with their instructors/onsite director, and hands-on experience engaging with campers. The goals of this program are to provide teens with the training and skills to become effective leaders, improve selfconfidence, learn public speaking skills in a group setting, assist children in a camp environment, and excel at handling responsibility at camp. This program prepares teens for future work experience, motivates them to be effective role models, allows them to select the specialty camps they want to participate in, and is a great résumé builder! CITs may also request letters of recommendation in the future! CIT Summer Experience at Camp During the summer, CITs engage with campers under the supervision of their lead instructor and the camp director. One main goal of the CIT Leadership Program is for lead instructors and CITs to develop strong professional interactions where the CITs learn from their instructors at camp and continue to improve their leadership skills each day. CITs are also encouraged to write daily journal entries pertaining to their camp experiences, and these entries are discussed at weekly leadership conferences between the CIT, lead instructor, and the camp director. The leadership conferences are a great way for the instructors and the camp director to work with the CIT on his/her leadership skills and performance at camp. Under the supervision of our experienced staff, CITs assist campers with camp activities, help with organizing materials and supplies, think creatively, share ideas, and act as positive role models for campers. CITs are very hands-on, are generally grouped with younger campers, and choose the specialty camp or camps where they want to be placed. CITs may teach campers to do things like bake a cake, use proper technique when passing and receiving a soccer ball, build and program robots, create an app, hand sew a doll, design a handbag, build a rocket, and install mods in Minecraft! The Minimum Required Participation is 3 Weeks. I love being able to learn about technology like the campers, but also get experience in being a leader. I had fun and was given responsibility at camp. It was great! Kieron C., CIT For more details including the Application Process and Orientation, please visit lavnercamps.com/cit lavnercamps.com 38

43 frequently asked questions Question #1: Are your camps accredited? Answer: Yes, we are accredited by the American Camp Association in Pennsylvania and New Jersey, and carry our practices to other states. The American Camp Association provides a guideline of hundreds of standards, and conducts site visits for re-accreditation. While it is a lot of work to become and remain accredited, our commitment shows the dedication that we have at Lavner Camps to providing a safe and healthy environment for our campers, and our overall commitment to excellence and your child! Question #2: What are your staff to camper ratios? Answer: Typically our ratios are 1 staff member to 8 campers or better. We strive to create a camp environment where campers receive excellent supervision and lots of personal attention during instructional and recreational periods. We invest in great staff and low ratios to ensure the best camp experience for your child, which is what counts the most! Question #3: Who are your instructors? Answer: Our instructors are high level and are the very best out of a large pool of qualified applicants we consider. Each year, we hire less than 8% of our applicants. Typically, our lead instructors consist of teachers, college professors, undergrad/grad students from excellent colleges/universities, and the occasional superstar student entering college in the fall. Assistant instructors typically consist of accomplished rising seniors. Our instructors are extremely knowledgeable in the subject area, passionate about working with kids, highly responsible, and have cleared background checks. Instructors go through a rigorous orientation and training prior to the summer camp season and have constant support from onsite camp directors and our central office. We put them in a position to succeed and they do! Question #4: Do you have an on-site camp director? Answer: Yes! Many of our onsite directors are full time teachers during the school year. Our on-site camp directors manage each camp location. They are trained to make sure that daily operations at camp are running smoothly, and are also CPR and First Aid certified. Camp directors are available onsite to answer your questions, and are available by phone and if you need to communicate with them during the day. These positions are highly sought after, and we only hire the best. Camp directors also work directly with our central office, communicate on a daily basis, and offer great support to campers and instructors each day. Our central office also employs regional directors who visit camp locations to help ensure a high quality camp environment! Question #5: Do campers usually attend for one week or more than one week? Answer: Camper attendance varies. Most campers attend for multiple weeks, either in the same camp or in a variety of camps. Lots of campers like to attend for multiple weeks, and enjoy customizing their camp schedules. Question #6: How do you group the campers each week? Answer: Campers are grouped by age and ability, and we run multiple levels of curriculum in each camp. This allows for campers to attend camp with us at any time during the summer, even if they are beginners. Our campers can sign up for any week and be placed appropriately in camp. This provides our camp families with maximum flexibility. Question #7: Do your campers improve at camp? Answer: Yes! Campers receive approximately hours of concentrated time in their camp activity per week. With this amount of focused time, combined with our cutting-edge curriculum and high level instructors, our campers improve a lot! This is the model that our specialty camps are built on, and thousands of campers build their skills and have fun each summer! They are also attending with other campers who share similar interests, which fosters learning through peer to peer interaction, creating an environment of collaboration and learning. Question #8: How do you keep camp fun? Answer: We hire fun and dynamic instructors, and focus on creating an awesome camp culture! Campers are also attending a specialty camp of their choice, so they already want to be there! We also incorporate a number of breaks during the day with opportunities for recreation and socialization.
