1 THE PARK POST William Morris, A.M.C.T., Park Manager Delta, Ontario K0E 1G0 August 2017 PARTNERSHIP PROVIDES PLAYGROUND UPGRADES Lower Beverley Lake Park is now the home to two new playground climbers designed for children 18 months to 12 years of age thanks to a funding partnership between Hydro One Inc., the Lower Beverley Lake Park Seasonal Campers Recreation Committee and the Park Management Board. With a total value of $51,000, these climbers will provide hours of enjoyment for the children who visit the park each season. Hydro One funding was realized through a $15,000 donation from the Hydro One Safe Communities Grant Program which is a community investment program designed to support and enhance children s sports and recreation facilities in Ontario Communities that are served by Hydro One. Helping to build safe and accessible recreation facilities for children is an important part of creating a healthy community noted Hydro One Customer Services Manager Steve Durant during the presentation. Each project, no matter how big or small, enhances community infrastructure. An additional $15,000 donation was received towards the climbers from the Seasonal Campers Recreation Committee who raised their contribution through in park bingos, raffles and fundraising breakfasts. The seasonal campers at Lower Beverley Park have a long-standing tradition of supporting projects for the youth within the park. The installation of these new playground climbers at our campground is a perfect example of how a few people can make such a vast difference in the lives of so many. Thanks to the combined support of our partners, the campground experience will be much more enjoyable for thousands of children for years to come said Park Manager William Morris. Support such as this has truly made a positive and long-lasting difference within the Delta community Photo (l-r) Al Moorhouse-Seasonal Campers Liaison, Steve Durant-Customer Services Manager Hydro One Networks Inc., Hazel Wykes-Vice Chairperson of the Lower Beverley Lake Park Management Board and William Morris, Park Manager.

Do you know the story behind the Buddy Benches? If not, here it is For many children, playtime is often the best part of the day, but for others, it can be a lonely time. The simple concept behind the Buddy Bench has been adopted by communities around the world. Basically, when a child feels lonely, they go over and sit on the buddy bench. Other children in the play area will notice the lonely child and then go over and mingle with that child. The buddy bench idea has been around for some time in Europe and has recently exploded in popularity in the United States and Canada. Addition information regarding the Buddy Bench program can be found online at

10 THINK PROPANE SAFETY! Around the Grill Few things can match the fun and enjoyment of a barbecue with family/friends. Practice sensible, safe barbecuing and your summer get-together will be sizzling success! Do Remember to always turn the gas valve on first. Keep gas hoses away from hot surfaces and hot grease. Keep children away from the gas valve and the grill. Keep loose clothing away from the hot barbecue. Clean the burners and grill regularly to minimize the risk of a serious grease fire. When you finish, turn the valve off first to allow the gas in the hose to be burned off, and then turn off the burner controls so no gas remains trapped in the hose. Allow your barbecue to cool completely before covering it. Don t Leave the barbecue unattended when in use. Allow grease to build up. Put water on a grease fire. It will only cause the flames to flare. Barbecue in an enclosed space, such as a garage. For ventilation and safety reasons, move your barbecue into the open at least 10 feet away from windows and doors. Place your barbecue near wooden fences or walls, beneath a combustible roof overhead or even under a tree with low branches. Be extra careful about the area behind the BBQ where hot gases escape and could create a fire hazard. When shopping for a new barbecue, look for the CSA Blue Flame Mark which shows that the BBQ meets recognized Canadian safety standards. Test Your BBQ for Leaks Clean your burner ports and tubes with a pipe cleaner or wire. Check the hose attached to your tank. If cracked or damaged, replace it. Test leaks with a 50/50 water/soap solution to cylinder connections and hoses. If bubbles appear, you ve got a leak. Tighten the connection or get it fixed. Portable Propane Heater Safety Did You Know? Never use a portable propane heater inside your tent, cottage or any enclosed space. Carbon monoxide will build up to dangerous levels that will cause serious injury or even death! When it s chilly at the cottage or campsite, stay warm by: sitting around the campfire; using a heater that is permanently installed and properly vented; plugging in an electrical space heater. Carbon monoxide can build up in your RV under certain conditions. Ensure to follow these tips to keep your mobile home-away from-home carbon monoxide free: Never block the combustion exhaust vent on the external wall of your trailer. Never construct an enclosed space around the vent (where exhaust cannot escape). Have a certified fuels contractor inspect and maintain your propane equipment on an annual basis. Install a carbon monoxide alarm and propane leak alarm. Use designated spaces for storage and transportation of gas cylinders.
