4 Tony s RV Chatter Keeping it clean! As the urge to go camping gets stronger, many of us start to bring our recreational vehicles out of storage at this time of year. This is spring cleaning time for our homes and yards and this extends to our summer residence also. While this is a good time to do basic maintenance on our units we want to start the season out right. Remember, a clean RV will improve the resale value and increase the level of enjoyment. One important thing to note is that to read the manufacturer s instructions regarding the maintenance and cleaning of your RV. Whatever advice I give or that you have read elsewhere, the manufacturer s procedures must take precedence. You should empty the cupboards and storage areas first. These often hold food particles but can also be the most likely area to lose items. Clean them thoroughly and then re-pack. The cleaner the unit the less chance of mice infestation as they seek food and make shelter near their food source. Make a list of what is in the RV so that you know what is missing and can avoid duplication. When cleaning do not use harsh compounds. Baking soda and water can provide a safe abrasive in most instances. Products are available thru the Wilderness Village store for cleaning the rubber roof, exterior, and interior of your RV. Specialty chemicals are available for specific problems such as cleaning the black tank. Ask me for advice, I would be more than happy to answer your questions. Remember to test any cleaning solution on a concealed area before using. I have included some de-winterizing steps in this issue. As the steps may not be the same for all units, It will give you a good idea of where to start. 5 Tony s Tip Read the manuals that came with your RV thoroughly. They are full of useful information including safety restrictions. While you don t have to memorize them, you should be aware of what they contain so you can refer to them as required. If your RV came without manuals see if your selling dealership can track down some for you. Tony s RV Chatter De-winterizing your RV Step by step guide 1. Check to ensure all LP tanks are full and Battery is fully charged. 2. Replace all water plugs and close Black and Grey holding tank gate valves. This includes the water heater, low point drains etc 3. Hook up the RV battery. Remember the white is normally the ground (negative) on an RV. 4. Fill the fresh water tank. You probably don t have to fill the tank but will need enough water to fill the water heater plus about 6-10 gallons. 5. Turn on the pump 6. Turn on the cold water tap farthest from the pump. Allow it to run until clear water comes out and then turn it off. 7. Turn on the hot water tap at the same point 8. Turn on the remainder of the taps one at a time. Don t forget the outside shower! 9. Flush the toilet. This is a good time to ensure you have chemical in the toilet tank. 10. Turn the bypass on the hot water heater to the summer position. Open a hot water tap to allow air, trapped in the tank, to be released. 11. Let the tank fill up. Wait until water flows freely from the tap. 12. Turn off the pump and connect your hose to the city water connection (if desired). 13. Turn on the propane. You should consider having your RV professionally inspected for gas leaks yearly. 14. Light the stove to remove any air build up in the gas lines. Once you get a steady flame, turn off the stove. 15. Plug in the RV to 110V 16. Light the water heater or turn on 110v power to hot water heater. 17. Turn fridge on 110V or gas if no 110V is available 18. Drain the fresh water tank, water left in the tank will get stale over time. 19. Test air conditioner 20. Check your load list for missing items 21. Visit the Wilderness Village store to stock up on chemical, toilet paper, etc. 22. Happy Camping!
