1 Newsmonger Rotary Club of Seaford November 2013 President s Dispatches CONTENTS President s Dispatches Photo Gallery Grand Raffle Senior Citizens Party STEPS Euromeeting Sleigh Routes December 2013 What s On Inner Wheel This month I start my dispatches with some general news followed by a brief personal overview of the District Conference. Greetings to you and your families, how lovely it is watching the leaves changing colour and to enjoy the seasonal changes but now with the rain everything is waterlogged... Alongside that of course is the introduction of the Rotary Ramblers that Mike Allen has co-ordinated. Feedback from the hikers is positive and they look forward to the next expedition on November 12 th! Whilst carrying out a pleasant Rotary task Pippa, Dick and I enjoyed a very nice cup of coffee and cake at the Courtyard Café, Southease, part of the new Southdowns YHA complex which was recently visited by Her Majesty the Queen. It is to be recommended especially for a hikers rest. A group of 17 Rotarians and partners went to see the production of Cabaret at the Congress Theatre. It was somewhat lively and at times quite raunchy but everybody seemed to enjoy the show and the ice creams! Early in the month I had the pleasure of visiting Seaford Primary School together with Rtn Alan Wagstaff to collect the Backpacks on behalf of Mary s Meals that the children had collected. These Backpacks will be sent out to children in Africa to help them with their education. October was the last of our Boot and Craft Fairs for the year. We were blessed with a perfect autumn day in bright sunshine which encouraged lots of visitors and a good number of stall holders. An interesting after lunch speaker was Paula Leighton from STEPS a support agency for the elderly that advises on all aspects of day to day issues to do with housing issues. A very pleasant and amusing evening accompanied by partners took place on Wednesday 25 October. Sadly our speaker was unable to be present, but we look forward to hearing the presentation on The History of Art at a later date. Great news on the Rotary Raffle at Morrison s, a grand total of just under 2000 was raised for charities and good causes. This event is well established and the system of one seller/one scribe seemed to work well. Congratulations to both Martin and Tony for their sterling efforts in selling so many tickets. Some Personal Reflections on the District Conference. It was pleasing to see Seaford well represented at the Conference. There was a full and varied programme ranging from health topics, third world initiatives and Rotary matters. Two of the speakers who impressed me most were Chris Connors from the Coco s Foundation and the Prostrate Cancer Project by Professor Stephen Langley from Guildford. The Coco Foundation founded by Chris Connors three years ago is a small project whereby hairdresser Chris takes student hairdressers to South Africa to assist with improving the conditions and facilities of a small orphanage.this project was born from a chance remark from one of his students wishing he could do something to help other people
2 less fortunate than himself. Hence the Coco Foundation was started. Further information can be found on line at The presentation from Professor Langley on Prostrate Cancer was very inspiring and informative. We are lucky to have a Centre of Excellence in Guildford and now a satellite unit in Brighton. Funds for the continued research are badly needed firstly to complete the Bespoke Prostrate Cancer Unit at Guildford and to continue diagnostic research and treatment into this very common disease affecting men of any age. Our DG has now completed his charity beard growing stunt; we await news of the total monies raised. At the time of going to press the Community Service Committee is busy finalising the Christmas Sleigh Rota. This Rotary tradition has over the years become very much part of Seaford s Christmas which people of all ages look forward to especially the children seeing Father Christmas Enjoy your Rotary Michael Photo Gallery Left Jim and Richard visit Sovereign Harbour, Eastbourne. 3 Grand Raffle By the Editor The Rotary Club of Seaford Grand Raffle for 2013 raised a sum of just under 2000 for distribution to charities and worthy causes. Many thanks to members and friends who sold tickets, to all those who supported the raffle by buying tickets or making a donation, and of course to Morrisons for allowing their foyer to be used for ticket selling. Once again Martin Lamprecht came up trumps selling 260 worth of tickets and Tony Osborne chipped in with a further 100. At noon on Monday 28 October presentations were made at Morrisons to the lucky winners. The first prize of 500 went to Margaret Smorthit, the runner up Ruth Willox received 100, finally Mrs Morris (who was unable to attend the presentation) won 50. Margaret and Ruth also received a bouquet of flowers each courtesy of Tim Jeffery, Morrisons store manager. 4 Senior Citizens Party By the Editor On 7 November the Rotary Club of Seaford held their third Senior Citizens' Party, again staged at St. James' Trust in Blatchington Road, Seaford. Thirty five guests came along at around 2:30pm to enjoy themselves with a sherry (or soft drink) to start, followed by sing-along entertainment from Graham Tubb, Margot Miller and Rosemary Kemp. Then came Afternoon Tea with a variety of sandwiches and cakes as well as plenty of tea! More excellent entertainment from our trio of musicians was followed by Seaford Mayor, Councillor Anthony White, drawing the raffle prizes while Rotary President Michael Logan distributed them to the winners. Soon it was time to say goodbye for this year, and a happy group of guests were off home after a pleasant and refreshing afternoon. Thanks are due to many as well as the Rotarians, families and friends who gave up their time. St. James' Trust kindly allowed us to use their facilities, and minibus transport was supplied again by CTLA with driver Gwyn, and this year also by our good friends the Lions Club of Newhaven, Peacehaven & Seaford with their driver Dirk. Mayor Anthony White enjoyed the afternoon with us all for which we thank him, and last but not least, thanks to entertainers Graham, Margot and Rosemary. 5 STEPS By Jim Anderson & the Editor On 9 October Paula Leighton came to a Wednesday lunch to explain to members the functions and role of the organisation STEPS, the name describing the free step by step nature of giving housing related support to those over 65 who are in need. The objective is to enable elderly people to continue to be independent in their own home. It is available to all except for those who are in sheltered accommodation, and is short term for up to a year. The scheme is now two years into a pilot, which has been extended until Paula is employed by Eastbourne Homes under contract to ESCC and is team leader for the Lewes District team with seven floating support workers in her team supporting around 120 clients. There are similar teams in Eastbourne & Wealden Anyone can refer into the service, for example neighbours, and referrals are made by a wide range of people - one was from America about a parent in need. Initial referrals go by phone into the office who identify whether further follow up is required. Common support areas include:- Helping with paperwork including benefits, identifying what can be claimed to maximise income Dealing with difficult landlords ensuring fairness on both sides Downsizing, giving help with choices Get best deals and tariffs with utilities Helping with loneliness Community transport contacts Old peoples' clubs Attendance allowance, dementia is a frequent problem Clients lead on what support is given. There are no average clients, they are all individuals, aged between 65 and 100, and clients can come for support as often as they need to. If you want to find out more about STEPS and you live in Eastbourne, Lewes or Wealden areas contact: Phone Text referrals@stepswest.co.uk Photo of Paula by Mike Hemmings 5
6 Euromeeting Euromeeeting is a Rotary get-together of clubs representing different European countries - one club per country. Size limitations have resulted in the number of countries being limited to eight or nine. Each year there is a weekend event in the autumn hosted by one of the clubs who take it in turns to be host. Thursday has a pre-meeting programme that includes a golf competition and alternatives for the non-golfers. The meeting officially starts on Friday evening with an opening ceremony followed by dinner parties at the houses of Rotarians. Saturday has excursions to learn something about the area in which the host club is based and a formal gala dinner in the evening. Sunday morning sees the clubs putting on some form of entertainment, thankyous and goodbyes. This year the venue was Sardinia (Sardegna) and the host club Iglesias. The participants were: Club Country Number Auxerre France 8 Bochum Germany 12 Dublin Ireland 6 Iglesias Sardinia (Italy) Many! Hastings UK 6 Jönkörping Sweden 12 Oudenarde Belgium 14 Paphos-Aphrodite Cyprus 15 (Moscow-Pokrovka) observers! Russia 2 From our international correspondent Alan Wagstaffe Excursions included archaeological sites, wine tasting, an amazing cavern and golf! The opening ceremony had a strong mediaeval flavour with crossbow shooting and skilful dancing with flags. Food was excellent (a lot of fish and shellfish) but too plentiful and the wine was excellent and much too plentiful. The white wine from the Vermentaria grape is worth looking out for. Hastings swept the board on Sunday with Old MacDonald really funny! This year the clubs donated funds to a project nominated by the hosts and this will now be an established part of the event. Did we enjoy it? Of course, even though it was very tiring (there were no nights, only mornings afternoon and evenings!) meeting up with friends from previous visits was great and seeing a fresh location fascinating. Next year Sweden! 6
