We are approaching the close of our first year as the Twin Rivers District. It has been quite the experience. Managing 200 Packs and Troops and 6,500 + youth is a large task. I feel it has been a successful year, especially on the side of the Fall Cub Scout Recruitment. Nearly every school in the metro area conducted some type of promo on at their buildings before the first day of school even started, school access has increased, and the number of volunteers involved in organizing the campaign increased drama cally. A lot of work behind the scenes is happening to ramp up for a successful 2018, Klondike Derby, Spring Camporee, and Fall Camporees are in the works. We are nearly through a success Popcorn Sale campaign and rolling into the 2018 Friends of Scou ng campaign, tled, To help other people at all mes. Also, re charter me is upon us, please take the me to complete this process by the end of this year. Let me know if you need any help. 5 Registration Opened September 1 st We have an action-packed night of adventure for $25 per adult and $45 Per Scout. Cub Scouts will spend an overnight at the museum exploring SCI after-hours! Experience science behind the scenes for an evening of education and fun! The program that SCI has put together for the Mid-Iowa Council will focus on the requirements to earn the NOVA STEM award! Tiger Cubs are NOT eligible to earn the NOVA STEM award. Your scout will have the opportunity to work on portions of the NOVA STEM award. All wards earned at this event will be purchased and presented by your pack. Arrive with all necessary items, including sleeping bags, pillows, toiletries and comfortable sleeping clothes. Temperatures fluctuate in the building, so be prepared for anything! You may bring a twin-sized air mattress, but we kindly request that you do not bring cots. There will be an evening snack and complementary popcorn with the IMAX movie and light healthy breakfast available, so please indicate on your registration if you or your scout has special dietary needs. Outside food or drinks are not allowed. Driving directions are available at and discounted parking passes for the handicap-accessible ramp north of SCI can be purchased at the Box Office upon arrival when you sign in. If you are running late, please call the Box Office at (515) ext The event starts at 6pm so please plan to arrive in time to park and check in by 6pm. Each Tiger Cub (1st grader) must be accompanied by an adult. Wolf, Bear and Webelos are required to have a 6 Scout to 2 adult ratio per Pack. (dens can be mixed, Tiger adults cannot double as a Wolf, Bear, or Webelos Leader.) The Boy Scouts of America is one of the very few youth serving organiza ons that covers all its leaders with liability insurance. Scou ng as we know it, would not be able to con nue if our leaders did not have the assurance they are protected. However, it s no surprise that costs go up and cost of liability insurance coverage is increasing at an extraordinary rate millions of dollars each year! The current coverage provided by the Na onal Council cannot con nue without an increase in the annual member registra on fee. Effec ve December 1, 2017, the annual registra on fee* for all of us will increase to $ None of us like to pay more money, but there is good news: First, liability insurance remains in place covering you going to, at, or going home from any Scou ng ac vity. Second, in addi on to liability insurance, the Mid Iowa Council provides Accident & Sickness Insurance to every single member while engaged in Scou ng ac vi es at no cost to you. 8

Rain or shine, this event starts at 5:00 PM on Friday and will end at 6:00 PM on Saturday evening. Register at: h p:\\ on the training calendar under the date. Pre registra on required. The basics of the Buddy System: Looking out for one another anywhere and everywhere is the keystone to the buddy system. Just because you re in a populous place doesn t mean you can t get overlooked by those around you. Buddies are there to watch you when others may not. They stay nearby to monitor you, aler ng a safety team if help is needed. Adults are not exempt from any these safety measures. Scouters should have buddies during all Scou ng ac vi es, too. Buddy system guidelines: The buddy system should be used at all mes, not just for aqua cs. Horseback riding, cycling, canvassing the neighborhood during a fundraiser you name it, you need a buddy. It s recommended that buddies know and be comfortable with each other. No youth should be forced into or made to feel uncomfortable by a buddy assignment. It is strongly encouraged to pair Scouts of similar abili es, ages and maturity. Self selec on with no more than two years age or significant differences in maturity is recommended. A buddy team may consist of three Scouts when necessary, like an odd number in a group. On the water: Buddies should check into and out of an area together. They are to stay in the same assigned area, too. If two buddies are of differing swimming abili es, they should remain in the assigned area of the buddy s lesser ability level. About every 10 minutes, lookouts can conduct a buddy check. The lookout gives a signal and calls for Buddies. Buddies are expected to raise each other s hand by the me the lookout counts to 10. Lookouts count the paired swimmers before swimming resumes. Scouts on a float trip need to have buddies as well, and each boat should have a buddy boat. On the trail: While hiking or camping in the backcountry, Scouts are encouraged to travel in groups of at least four. That way, if one gets injured, a buddy can stay with him, while the other two seek help. At mee ngs: When mee ng with a merit badge counselor, Scouts can have a fellow Scout, sibling, parent, rela ve or friend with them. A buddy isn t necessary for a Scoutmaster conference, but the mee ng should be visible and accessible by others. Different merit badge classes will be offered by professionals in the field at their business or union hall. Class size will vary and will be limited, register early. When? 13 31 ST WINTER SURVIVAL TRAINING Saturday, January 27, 2018, 9:00 am to 3:00 pm (Check in: 8:30 am to 8:55 am) Iowa State University Armory Pammel Drive and Russell Road Ames, Iowa This annual Mid Iowa Council event brings to Boy Scouts, Varsity Scouts, and adult leaders an opportunity to receive knowledge in how to survive under winter condi ons. The training event will host as many as 300 par cipants and is being conducted by the Army R.O.T.C. Staff and cadets at Iowa State University. This will be the 30th year they have provided this training. Instructors will cover such subjects as: How to find your way Building fires and finding food Making shelters Signaling Games and a lot more Come dressed for the weather outside! This training includes both morning and a ernoon sessions of classroom instruc on and outdoor workshops. Scouts not properly dressed may be asked to stay inside. The fee for this event is $20.00 per youth member or adult leader a ending. The fee includes a con nental breakfast, lunch, coffee for adults, and patch. ADULT PARTICIPANTS Adults will be permi ed to a end the event and will be asked to a end both the indoor and outdoor sessions, and help provide assistance in keeping Scouts orderly and a en ve. By doing this, leaders will be able to get the same ps the Scouts get, and help with the quality of the training. WEBELOS SCOUTS are asked not to par cipate in this training. 14 Introduc on to Outdoor Leader Skills (IOLS) April 20 21, 2018 Mi gwa Scout Reserva on Introduc on to Outdoor Leader Skills (IOLS) course builds and expands on the concepts and themes introduced in Scoutmaster Posi on Specific Training and provides Scouters with the confidence to take youth into the outdoors. Specifically, this hands on program gives adult leaders a prac cal introduc on to the patrol method of a boy led troop by teaching many of the prac cal outdoor skills they need to lead Scouts in the out of doors. 18 Mid Iowa Council Philmont Expedi ons 2018 will be the 79th Anniversary of Philmont's first camping season in The Mid Iowa Council Philmont Expedi ons will put together five crews of 10 Scouts and 2 advisors a total of 56 Scouts and leaders. It is me for you to think about commi ng to this expedi on. The Con ngent trek will depart and return to Des Moines; the dates are July 21 August 4, The two weeks should fall before the beginning of football prac ce and marching band in most school systems. Conflicts should be worked out in advance by the Scout and the coach. The trip will be two full calendar weeks: departure on a Saturday, return on Saturday two weeks later. The es mated cost of the trip is $1, per person and a deposit of $ per person is due with the applica on. No further fees will be payable un l early fall of 2017 and future payments will be spread over a 10 month period. This is a first come first served situa on. The total cost includes Philmont fees, charter transport, meals en route, crew picture, maps, and con ngent T shirt and jacket. Each Scout is responsible for his own spending money. Fees paid are refundable provided cancella on is early enough to allow the spot to be sold to another Scout. Cancella ons made at the last minute may not be refundable since most expenses are fixed costs. Please make all checks payable to: MID IOWA COUNCIL PHILMONT EXPEDITIONS. Some things to keep in mind as you plan: The maximum crew size is 10 Scouts, 2 adult advisors. Crews larger than 12 are not permi ed. Smaller crews may have Scouts from other troops included. Scouts must be 14 years old by January 1, 2018, or have completed the 8 th grade by summer of No excep ons. All applicants must be registered members of the Boy Scouts of America. Philmont is a physically demanding experience. Applicants with chronic illness, excessive body weights, or severe food allergies should give serious considera on. A specific Philmont medical physical examina on is required. All travel is by chartered bus. Travel uniform is the Class A uniform ("Class A" shirt and Scout shorts or pants). Three mee ngs are required: the first was in September, the second will be in late March, 2018, and the final in early June, Scouts and adult leaders are expected to be in Class A uniform at each mee ng. Printed informa on is available at these mee ngs covering all aspects of the Con ngent. Each of the crews may set up addi onal mee ngs or prac ce hikes. Guidebooks, physical blanks, and other informa on are provided at the March, 2018, mee ng. A complete medical examina on will be required of each par cipant on the specific 2018 Philmont physical form. You should consider the following op ons: 18 years of age and older: Join Camp Staff Administra ve roles as an area director or support staff manager. This provides you with the ability to supervise and make key decisions on the direc on of camp years of age: Work as a member of program or support staff such as merit badge instructor, trading post clerk, kitchen assistant. 15 years of age or younger: Consider par cipa ng in the Counselor in Training program. Experience the taste of being on camp staff for two weeks. Working at summer camp has shown that Scouts improve their: Cri cal thinking skills Social Skills Self esteem Independence Leadership skills Staff receive free room and board (meals) and a discount at the Mid Iowa Scout Shop while employed. Staff also receive specialized training and a compe ve salary. Individuals seeking an internship in a field related to any area of camp may be eligible to use their employment as a paid internship.
